Melanoma in children, adolescents, and young adults: a clinical pathological study in a Brazilian population.

Malignant melanoma in children, adolescents, and young adults is unusual, especially before puberty. In children (age, 0-14 years), most primary lesions are thick and atypical (amelanotic, simulating pyogenic granuloma). In the population of adolescents and young adults (age, 15-39 years), melanoma is the third most common cancer, only behind lymphoma and breast cancer. Our study investigated the records of 89 patients diagnosed with cutaneous melanoma at age 0-39 years at Hospital das Clínicas, Medical School, University of São Paulo between 1992 and 2002. They were divided into group A (0-14

Main outcome measure was postoperative complications. RESULTS: The mean follow-up period was 17.2 ± 6.3 (range, 6-33) months. The postoperative complications observed included conjunctival encroachment over the graft, small graft, graft dislodging, thick graft, improper position, g

A retrospective study of paediatric oral lesions from Thailand.

AIM: To survey the paediatric oral lesions in Thailand. DESIGN: Biopsy records over a 15-year period (1990-2004) were retrieved from the files of the Department of Oral Pathology, Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University. Paediatric cases with an age of 16 years or younger were selected. The age of the patients was divided into three groups according to the dentition period. The lesions were classified into three categories: inflammatory/reactive lesions, cystic lesions, and tumour/tumour-like lesions. RESULTS: From a total of 8314 oral biopsies, 1251 cases (15.05%) were in the paediat

Nd:YAG and CO2 laser therapy of oral mucosal lesions.

OBJECTIVE: Experiences gained in the management of oral mucosal lesions by CO2 and Nd:YAG laser therapy in an outpatient clinic treated over an 80-year period are described. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Lasers have indications for use in dentistry for incision, excision, and coagulation of intraoral soft tissue. Advances in laser technology have provided delivery systems for site-specific delivery of laser energy with short interaction items on tissue to be ablated. This study retrospectively evaluates a series of clinical case studies. METHODS: Sixty-four patients with a variety of benign oral

Cell-matrix interactions modulate interstitial collagenase expression by human keratinocytes actively involved in wound healing.

We reported that interstitial collagenase is produced by keratinocytes at the edge of ulcers in pyogenic granuloma, and in this report, we assessed if production of this metalloproteinase is a common feature of the epidermal response in a variety of wounds. In all samples of chronic ulcers, regardless of etiology, and in incision wounds, collagenase mRNA, localized by in situ hybridization, was prominently expressed by basal keratinocytes bordering the sites of active re-epithelialization indicating that collagenolytic activity is a characteristic response of the epidermis to wounding. The histological nature of epulides in dogs.

The histological characteristics of a series of 154 oral tumours with the clinical appearance of epulides in 129 dogs were reviewed. Diagnoses were based on current criteria in human oral pathology and compared with the original diagnoses. The histological findings suggested that the majority of epulides in the dog can be classified as focal fibrous hyperplasia (43.5 per cent), peripheral ameloblastoma (17.5 per cent), peripheral odontogenic fibroma (WHO type) (16.9 per cent) and pyogenic granuloma (1.95 per cent). In addition, a number of other odontogenic tumours (1.95 per cent) and non-odon

The management of central intravenous catheter infections.

Catheter-associated infection is a frequent complication in patients with indwelling intravenous catheters used for administration of total parenteral nutrition and/or cancer chemotherapy. Thirty-seven catheter-associated infections in 19 patients were identified in our retrospective survey conducted for the period from January 1, 1982, through December 31, 1982. Fourteen patients were receiving total parenteral nutrition for gastrointestinal disorders, and five were receiving total parenteral nutrition and chemotherapy for underlying malignancy. Coagulase-negative staphylococci were isolated

Immunohistochemical detection for Actinomyces sp. in swine tonsillar abscess and granulomatous mastitis.

The tonsils of eleven pigs and the mammary glands of a sow were used to investigate actinomycotic lesions due to Actinomyces sp. infection. At necropsy, there was no abnormality on these tonsils, on the other hand, numerous abscesses containing sulfur granules were found in the mammary. Histopathologically, the Actinomyces sp. lesions were noted as crypt abscesses in the tonsils and as pus-forming granulomas in the mammary glands. The microorganisms in both lesions were composed of bead-like cocci, bacillary cells and short, branching filaments, those cells being positive by the Gram's and Gro

Gingival and alveolar ridge overgrowths: A histopathological evaluation from Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Focal tissue overgrowths on the gingiva and edentulous alveolar ridge are occasionally perplexing to periodontists, owing to the wide variety of differential diagnoses that may be responsible. As such, biopsy and microscopy are often required to establish a definitive diagnosis. The present study aimed to retrospectively evaluate focal gingival and alveolar ridge overgrowths at a single institution in Saudi Arabia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Histopathology reports and slides from patients presenting to King Saud University Hospital between 1984 and 2016, particularly those with focal

Beta-blockers for childhood vascular tumors.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Since 2008, beta-blockers have become first-line treatment for infantile hemangiomas, the most common tumor of infancy. Their role is also being explored in the treatment of other childhood vascular tumors. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent research has demonstrated that propranolol is a more effective and safer treatment for infantile hemangiomas than previous therapeutic options. It is most effective when initiated during the tumor's proliferative phase. Other oral beta-blockers such as atenolol and nadolol are less studied, but may offer similar efficacy. Topical beta-blockers suc

[Superficial granulomatous pyoderma].

INTRODUCTION: Superficial granulomatous pyoderma is a rare variant of pyoderma gangrenosum, which is often diagnosed at a late stage because of misleading clinical-histopathological features. We report a new case of this rare disease. CASE REPORT: A 67 year-old man presented with inflammatory lesions that had become ulcerated over the past 4 months despite prolonged antibiotic therapy. The histopathological aspect was initially suggestive of palisading granuloma annulare and subsequently a necrotizing granuloma compatible with a mycobacteriosis. The various supplementary examinations eliminat

Surgical and Prosthetic Management of a Peripheral Giant Cell Granuloma Around Dental Implants: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

A peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is a benign fibrous connective tissue entity described as a tumor-like hyperplasia that appears on the gingiva and alveolar ridges. Histopathologically, a PGCG is characterized by the presence of multinuclear giant cells and originates from periodontal membrane or periosteal cells. PGCG is considered a reactive lesion resulting from chronic traumatic or irritating factors, such as calculus accumulation, food impaction, or inadequate dental restorations. The purpose of this article is the presentation of a case of PGCG in an edentulous area around dental

Metastasis in the mandible involving gingiva: An intriguing case with a perplexing pathology.

Oral metastasis, although rare, tends to involve jawbones, particularly the posterior region of the mandible, and involvement of oral soft tissues, even when less likely, is most often seen on the gingiva and tongue. Clinically, the soft-tissue masses tend to mimic pyogenic granuloma, peripheral giant cell granuloma or an epulis and thus are difficult to diagnose and identify. The jaw bone is preferred by prostate carcinoma as a metastatic target. Prostate malignancy, which is more common in Western countries than in India, may be adenocarcinomas or carcinomas. Oftentimes, metastatic lesions d
