Resting-state functional connectivity of the anterior cingulate cortex in young adults depressed patients with and without suicidal behavior.

Functional alterations in the subregions of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) have been observed in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Studies have shown that higher depressive symptoms are associated with altered functional connectivity (FC) in different ACC sub-regions. Suicide is highly prevalent in patients with MDD; however, it is unclear whether suicidal behavior is associated with the FC alterations in the subregions of the ACC in these indibiduals. Seventy-six patients with MDD (41 with and 35 without a history of suicidal behavior) underwent functional magnetic resonance

A Dissociation in Effects of Risperidone Monotherapy on Functional and Anatomical Connectivity Within the Default Mode Network.

Respective changes in functional and anatomical connectivities of default mode network (DMN) after antipsychotic treatment have been reported. However, alterations in structure-function coupling after treatment remain unknown. We performed diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging in 42 drug-naive first-episode schizophrenia patients (FESP) both at baseline and after 8-weeks risperidone monotherapy, and in 38 healthy volunteers. Independent component analysis was used to assess voxel-wise DMN synchrony. A 3-step procedure was used to trace fiber pat

Shared neural representations of tactile roughness intensities by somatosensation and touch observation using an associative learning method.

Previous human fMRI studies have reported activation of somatosensory areas not only during actual touch, but also during touch observation. However, it has remained unclear how the brain encodes visually evoked tactile intensities. Using an associative learning method, we investigated neural representations of roughness intensities evoked by (a) tactile explorations and (b) visual observation of tactile explorations. Moreover, we explored (c) modality-independent neural representations of roughness intensities using a cross-modal classification method. Case (a) showed significant decoding per

Consistent linear and non-linear responses to invasive electrical brain stimulation across individuals and primate species with implanted electrodes.

BACKGROUND: Electrical neuromodulation via implanted electrodes is used in treating numerous neurological disorders, yet our knowledge of how different brain regions respond to varying stimulation parameters is sparse. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that the neural response to electrical stimulation is both region-specific and non-linearly related to amplitude and frequency. METHODS: We examined evoked neural responses following 400 ms trains of 10-400 Hz electrical stimulation ranging from 0.1 to 10 mA. We stimulated electrodes implanted in cingulate cortex (dorsal anterior cingulate

Prospective memory impairment in patients with white matter lesions.

OBJECTIVE: A vast majority of the episodic memory literature in white matter lesions (WML) had focused on "retrospective memory (RM)", little was known about prospective memory (PM) in WML patients. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of WML patients on event-based prospective memory (EBPM) and time-based prospective memory (TBPM). In addition, our study attempted to understand the possible mechanisms of PM damage in WML patients. METHODS: A total of 42 WML patients and 40 age and education level matched healthy controls were included. EBPM (an action whenever particular words

Effects of mild traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder on resting-state default mode network connectivity.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common outcomes for service members. Abnormal connectivity within neural networks has been reported in the resting brain of mTBI and PTSD patients, respectively; however, the potential role of PTSD in changes to neural networks following injury has not been studied in detail. Using a data-driven approach, the present analysis aimed to elucidate resting state functional connectivity in the default mode network (DMN) in those with mTBI only and those with comorbid mTBI and PTSD. A secondary analysis focused on disti

Cingulo-hippocampal effective connectivity positively correlates with drug-cue attentional bias in opioid use disorder.

Individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) often relapse when exposed to opioid-related cues. Previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have identified neuronal corticolimbic changes related to drug cue reactivity in OUD. However, the corresponding manner in which brain regions interact is still unclear. Effective (directional) connectivity was analyzed using dynamic causal modeling of fMRI data acquired from 27 OUD participants (13 with OUD and 14 with OUD and cocaine use disorder [OUD+CUD]), while performing an opioid-word Stroop task. Participants were shown opioid and n

Neural Correlates of Failed Inhibitory Control as an Early Marker of Disordered Eating in Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Binge eating and other forms of disordered eating behavior (DEB) are associated with failed inhibitory control. This study investigated the neural correlates of failed inhibitory control as a potential biomarker for DEB. METHODS: The study used prospective longitudinal data from the European IMAGEN study adolescent cohort. Participants completed baseline assessments (questionnaires and a brain scan [functional magnetic resonance imaging]) at 14 years of age and a follow-up assessment (questionnaires) at 16 years of age. Self-reported binge eating and/or purging were used to indica

Abnormal emotional and neural responses to romantic rejection and acceptance in depressed women.

INTRODUCTION: Responding adaptively to one's social environment is a key factor predicting the course of major depressive disorder (MDD). Socially rejecting events can exacerbate, whereas socially accepting events can ameliorate depressive symptoms. The neural responses to rejection and acceptance in MDD are relatively unexplored. METHODS: We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure neural responses to romantic rejection and acceptance in women diagnosed with current MDD (n = 19) and a matched group of healthy controls (HCs) (n = 19). During fMRI, participants received rej

Network abnormalities in generalized anxiety pervade beyond the amygdala-pre-frontal cortex circuit: Insights from graph theory.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) has excessive anxiety and uncontrollable worry as core symptoms. Abnormal cerebral functioning underpins the expression and perhaps pathogenesis of GAD:. Studies implicate impaired communication between the amygdala and the pre-frontal cortex (PFC). Our aim was to longitudinally investigate whether such network abnormalities are spatially restricted to this circuit or if the integrity of functional brain networks is globally disrupted in GAD. We acquired resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 16 GAD patients and 16 matched controls at b

Salience network connectivity and social processing in children with nonverbal learning disability or autism spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Nonverbal learning disability (NVLD) is a putative neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by spatial processing deficits as well as social deficits similar to those characteristic of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Nonetheless, NVLD may be a distinct disorder that is differentially associated with the functioning and connectivity of the salience (SN) and default mode (DMN) networks that support social processing. Thus, we sought to assess and compare connectivity across these networks in children with NVLD, ASD, and typically developing children. METHOD: Resting-state fMRI data

ANTINOCICEPTIVE TOLERANCE TO NSAIDS PARTIALLY MEDIATED VIA ENDOCANNABINOIDS IN ANTERIOR CINGULATE CORTEX OF RATS.

Pain is characterized as a complex experience, dependent not only on the regulation of nociceptive sensory systems but also on the activation of mechanisms that control emotional processes in limbic brain areas. Non-opioid, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most widely used analgesics in the treatment of not-severe pain. We have recently shown that repeated doses result in tolerance to these drugs like opioids. Here we investigated the central brain mechanisms of non-opioid induced antinociception in the non-acute pain models of rats, such as the 'formalin test' and a rela

Increased coherence-based regional homogeneity in resting-state patients with first-episode, drug-naive somatization disorder.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal neural activity has been observed in patients with somatization disorder (SD), especially in brain regions of the default-mode network (DMN). In this study, a coherence-based regional homogeneity (Cohe-ReHo) approach was used to detect abnormal regional synchronization in patients with SD, which might be used to differentiate the patients from the controls. METHODS: We recruited 25 patients with SD and 28 healthy controls. The imaging data of the participants were analyzed using the Cohe-ReHo approach. LIBSVM (a library for support vector machines) was utilized to verify

Theta and beta synchrony coordinate frontal eye fields and anterior cingulate cortex during sensorimotor mapping.

The frontal eye fields (FEFs) and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) are commonly coactivated for cognitive saccade tasks, but whether this joined activation indexes coordinated activity underlying successful guidance of sensorimotor mapping is unknown. Here we test whether ACC and FEF circuits coordinate through phase synchronization of local field potential and neural spiking activity in macaque monkeys performing memory-guided and pro- and anti-saccades. We find that FEF and ACC showed prominent synchronization at a 3-9 Hz theta and a 12-30 Hz beta frequency band during the delay and prepa

Altered fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation in premenstrual syndrome: A resting state fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is becoming highly prevalent among female and is characterized by emotional, physical and behavior symptoms. Previous evidence suggested functional dysregulation of female brain was expected to be involved in the etiology of PMS. The aim of present study was to evaluate the alterations of spontaneous brain activity in PMS patients based on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS: 20 PMS patients and 21 healthy controls underwent resting-state fMRI scanning during luteal phase. All participants were asked to complete a prospective daily rec

Response in taste circuitry is not modulated by hunger and satiety in women remitted from bulimia nervosa.

Individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN) engage in episodes of binge eating, marked by loss of control and eating despite fullness. Does altered reward and metabolic state contribute to BN pathophysiology? Normally, hunger increases (and satiety decreases) reward salience to regulate eating. We investigated whether BN is associated with an abnormal response in a neural circuit involved in translating taste signals into motivated behavior, when hungry and fed. Twenty-six women remitted from BN (RBN) and 22 control women (CW) were administered water and sucrose during 2 counterbalanced fMRI visits,

Anterior cingulate cortex grey matter volume abnormalities in adolescents with PTSD after childhood sexual abuse.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) substantially increase the risk of later psychiatric and somatic pathology. While neurobiological factors are likely to play a mediating role, specific insights are lacking. The scarce neuroimaging studies in traumatised pediatric populations have provided inconsistent results, potentially due to the inclusion of different types of trauma. To further improve our understanding of the neurobiology of pediatric psychotrauma, this study seeks to investigate abnormalities in grey matter volume (GMV) in a homogeneous group of adolescents with posttraumatic stress

Combat exposure is associated with cortical thickness in Veterans with a history of chronic pain.

Chronic Pain (CP) has been associated with changes in gray matter integrity in the cingulate and insular cortex. However, these changes have not been studied in Veterans, despite high prevalence rates of CP and interactions with combat-derived disorders. In the current study, 54 Veterans with a history of CP and 103 Veterans without CP were recruited from the Translational Research Center for Traumatic Brain Injury and Stress Disorders (TRACTS). Cortical thickness from structural MRI scans was determined using the FreeSurfer software package. Results showed that Veterans with CP showed a negat

Low-level alcohol consumption during adolescence and its impact on cognitive control development.

Adolescence is a critical period for maturation of cognitive control and most adolescents start experimenting with alcohol around that time. On the one hand, recent studies indicate that low control abilities predict future problematic alcohol use. On the other hand, binge drinking during young adulthood can (further) impair cognitive control. However, so far no study examined the effects of low-level alcohol use during adolescence. In the present longitudinal fMRI study, we therefore investigated the development of cognitive control in a community-based sample of 92 adolescents at ages 14, 16
