Xanthoma disseminatum: an unusual cause of facial and limb deformity.

A rare case of xanthoma disseminatum producing deformity of the head, neck, and extremities is reported. This pathologically benign disease, considered to represent one of the histiocyte proliferative disorders, is manifested by numerous cutaneous xanthomas primarily in flexion areas. Progressive enlargement of these lesions accompanied by marked fibrosis has produced the severe cosmetic and functional deformities described in this patient. Treatment in this case involved excision of xanthomatous contraction bands with split-thickness skin grafting, followed by intensive physical therapy.

Allergic contact dermatitis from cardamom.

A case is presented of a confectioner with a chronic hand dermatitis and positive patch test reactions to cardamom and certain terpenoid compounds present in the dried ripe seeds of cardamom. Cardamom is a popular traditional flavouring agent for baked goods and confectionery. Dermatitis from skin exposure to cardamom has to the best of our knowledge not been reported. We report one case of allergic contact dermatitis to cardamom elicited by terpenes present in the seeds.

Tough on germs, gentle on hands: a cross-sectional study on hand skin health, skincare and hygiene habit changes among medical students in their clinical years in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational hand dermatitis (OHD) has become increasingly prevalent in recent years among healthcare worker populations worldwide. The condition can be so debilitating that it leads to sick leave or even career changes. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the impact of hand hygiene practices on hand skin health and skin care habits among undergraduate medical students in their clinical years, who are preparing to enter the healthcare workforce. METHODS: The study population included undergraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) program students who have completed at least 1

Characteristics of patients patch tested in the European Surveillance System on Contact Allergies (ESSCA) network, 2009-2012.

BACKGROUND: Patch test results often vary between departments, and also between countries. Such variation may be partly attributable to systematic effects introduced by patient characteristics, differing exposures, patient selection, or methodological differences. OBJECTIVE: To examine the amount of variation of patient characteristics in terms of the MOAHLFA index and of the proportion of patients with at least one positive reaction to the (European) baseline series ('P' measure), and to examine potential reasons for the variation. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of patch te

Formaldehyde concentration in diagnostic patch testing: comparison of 1% with 2%.

Exposure to formaldehyde is common from both consumer products and industry. The reliability of the patch test is essential for the diagnosis of formaldehyde allergy as it is difficult to suspect from the patient's history. The recommended formaldehyde patch test concentration has been reduced over the last decades from 4-5% to 2% and is currently 1%. The changes have not been based upon formal studies, but driven by an intention to reduce irritancy and false-positive results. The aim of the present study was prospectively to compare the outcome of simultaneous testing with formaldehyde 1% and

Frontal fibrosing alopecia: reflections and hypotheses on aetiology and pathogenesis.

Since first described by Kossard in 1994, frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) has been something of an enigma. The clinical heterogeneity of FFA, its apparent rarity and investigators' suboptimal access to phenotypically consistent patient cohorts may all have had a negative impact on delineating disease pathogenesis. Moreover, there is a relative paucity of epidemiological, interventional and basic research studies, and there have been no advances in translational therapeutics, unlike for other inflammatory dermatoses, such as alopecia areata (AA). Dermatologists anecdotally describe an increasi

Chronic Hand Eczema, Real World, and Patient Centricity: A Narrative Review.

Chronic hand eczema is a multifactorial, fluctuating, inflammatory skin disease of the hands and wrists, defined as hand eczema that persists for at least 3 months or recurs at least twice within 1 year. Chronic hand eczema is heterogeneous in nature with different clinical manifestations. This chronic condition can significantly impact daily activities and health-related quality of life for patients, including notable physical, psychosocial, occupational, and socioeconomic burdens. However, awareness of the disease and the patient experience remains poor. This review aims to improve understan

The (new) occupational disease no. 5101: "Severe or recurrent skin diseases".

Occupational dermatoses are among the most common occupational diseases, with BK 5101 accounting for the largest proportion. Historically, the latter was also the most frequently reported group of occupational diseases within the working age population. More than 80,000 suspected cases of occupational diseases were notified in 2019, of which 19,883 related to BK 5101. In Germany, work-related hand eczema accounts for 90 % of all BK 5101 diseases, and consists mainly of contact eczema. Especially young people working in the hairdressing sector, health care, metal, food or construction industrie

Making Glove Decision Less of a White Knuckling Experience: A Systematic Review and Inventory of Glove Accelerator Contents.

BACKGROUND: Accelerators in medical gloves are a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis among healthcare workers. OBJECTIVE: A systematic review of medical and nursing literature, patch testing reports, and chemical analyses of gloves was conducted to assess accelerator contents reported in the literature and to identify accelerator-free gloves. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed in OVID Medline and OVID EMBASE. Hand-searching of reference lists of articles in the field and author input generated the remainder of articles assessed. RESULTS: We present an inventory of

Assessment of in vitro antifungal susceptibility pattern of dermatophytes isolated from patients with onychomycosis attending a tertiary care hospital of East Delhi.

The early immune mechanisms determining Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection outcome are unclear. Using bulk and scRNA-seq over the first weeks of infection, we describe an unexpected, higher early pulmonary type I IFN response in relatively resistant C57BL/6 as compared with highly TB-susceptible C3HeB/FeJ mice. C57BL/6 mice showed pronounced early monocyte-derived macrophage (MDM) accumulation and extensive CD4+ T cell-MDM interactions in lung lesions, accompanied by high expression of T cell-attractant chemokines by MDMs. Conversely, lesions in C3HeB/FeJ mice were dominated by neutrophils w
