Zebrafish heart regeneration: 15 years of discoveries.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. Compared to other organs such as the liver, the adult human heart lacks the capacity to regenerate on a macroscopic scale after injury. As a result, myocardial infarctions are responsible for approximately half of all cardiovascular related deaths. In contrast, the zebrafish heart regenerates efficiently upon injury through robust myocardial proliferation. Therefore, deciphering the mechanisms that underlie the zebrafish heart's endogenous regenerative capacity represents an exciting avenue to identify novel therapeutic strategies

Caveolin-3: therapeutic target for diabetic myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury.

Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is a major global health problem with high rates of mortality and disability, which is more severe in patients with diabetes. Substantial researches have documented that diabetic myocardium are more susceptible to I/R injury, but many current intervention strategies against myocardial I/R injury have limited effectiveness in diabetic hearts. Caveolin-3 (Cav-3) is the signature protein of caveolae and serves as a signal integration and transduction platform in the plasma membrane of cardiomyocytes, which plays a vital role in myocardial functions, me

Reassessing the cardiac box: A comprehensive evaluation of the relationship between thoracic gunshot wounds and cardiac injury.

BACKGROUND: High-energy missiles can cause cardiac injury regardless of entrance site. This study assesses the adequacy of the anatomic borders of the current "cardiac box" to predict cardiac injury. METHODS: Retrospective autopsy review was performed to identify patients with penetrating torso gunshot wounds (GSWs) 2011 to 2013. Using a circumferential grid system around the thorax, logistic regression analysis was performed to detect differences in rates of cardiac injury from entrance/exit wounds in the "cardiac box" versus the same for entrance/exit wounds outside the box. Analysis was re

New Drug Targets and Preclinical Modelling Recommendations for Treating Acute Myocardial Infarction.

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and the primary underlying risk factor for heart failure. Despite decades of research and clinical trials, there are no drugs currently available to prevent organ damage from acute ischaemic injuries of the heart. In order to address the increasing global burden of heart failure, drug, gene, and cell-based regeneration technologies are advancing into clinical testing. In this review we highlight the burden of disease associated with AMI and the therapeutic landscape based on market analyses. New studies

Penetrating pulmonary vein laceration following blunt chest trauma.

Flail chest is a common injury in blunt trauma which is usually treated with analgesia, oxygen, and other conservative measures. In more severe cases mechanical ventilation and surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) may be warranted. Penetrating injury to the heart or great vessels due to rib fractures however, is much less common. Here we present a 33 year old male that was admitted to the Emergency department (ED) after a horse riding accident, demonstrating severe shock. Emergency computerized tomography scan showed multiple bilateral displaced rib fractures, Left hemothorax and pos

TRAF5 protects against myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury via AKT signaling.

During the processes of myocardial ischemia reperfusion (I/R) injury, inflammation and apoptosis play an important role. I/R and its induced acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with high morbidity and mortality, and there is no effective treatment for it so far. TRAF5 has been shown to regulate inflammation and apoptosis in atherosclerosis, steatosis and melanoma cells, but its function in myocardial I/R injury is still unclear. This study demonstrates that the expression of TRAF5 is significant up-regulation in heart tissues of I/R injury mice and hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R)-stimulated cardiomy

Persistent Hypoxia After Blunt Thoracic Trauma due to Flail Tricuspid Valve Leaflet and Patent Foramen Ovale.

Structural cardiac injury after blunt trauma is uncommon but usually life-threatening. While tricuspid injury is very rare and potentially lethal, the right heart can accommodate larger volumes and higher pressures in acute tricuspid insufficiency and facilitate initial stabilization prior to definitive valvular repair. ECMO may be used to ameliorate resulting right heart failure. The traumatic force required to cause cardiac structural injury is also associated with pulmonary complications related to pneumothorax, hemothorax, effusion, acute pain secondary to rib fractures, and pulmonary cont

ST-segment elevation following lightning strike: case report and review of the literature.

Lightning strikes may cause injury to the heart, ranging from slight electrocardiographic changes to fatal damage. As heart injury is the most important cause of mortality in these patients, cardiac monitoring is crucial. Even though various ECG changes have been reported, published data on pathologic ST-segment changes is scarce. Herein, we present a seven-year old patient with ST-segment elevation following a lightning strike. There is not sufficient data regarding lightning-related myocardial ischemia. However, because of the similar effects of lightning strikes and high-voltage electric sh

[Holospinal epidural haematoma following heart surgery].

INTRODUCTION: Spinal epidural haematomas are rare entities associated to spinal traumatic injuries and vascular lesions or which can appear spontaneously. There are no direct reports linking them to heart surgery. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a female aged 43 years who underwent surgery to change a mitral valve because of a rheumatic heart disease, and who, from the immediate post operative period onwards, presented paraplegia with a sensory and motor level that reached C3, breathing troubles and quadriplegia. Diagnosis was performed in five days because it was thought that she was suff

A bibliographic review of medicine and science research in dancesport.

DanceSport is the competitive form of ballroom dancing, and even though it has more participants worldwide than ballet and modern dance, there is less peer-reviewed research. A review was conducted to identify all relevant literature to help researchers and clinicians gain an enhanced understanding of dancesport. Eight databases were searched, with 34 articles found in topics including participation motives, psychology, exercise physiology, fitness training, injuries and injury prevention, biomechanics, menstrual dysfunction, and substance use. Our results indicate that researchers have been i

[Noninvasive rejection surveillance after solid organ transplantations: analysis of the donor-derived cell-free DNA].

Solid organ transplant rejection is a major etiological factor of graft dysfunction, hospitalisation, and death. Invasive biopsy is still considered the gold standard method of monitoring rejection; however, besides the need for hospitalisation, common concerns are its complications and the high interobserver variability. Thus, noninvasive methods for monitoring allograft injury are of paramount importance. Donor-derived cell-free DNA (dd-cfDNA) characterizes graft injury, and it can be isolated from the recipient’s sera. Elevated dd-cfDNA levels precede the diagnosis of rejection on biopsy an

Amplitude-integrated EEG in newborns with critical congenital heart disease predicts preoperative brain magnetic resonance imaging findings.

OBJECTIVE: The study aims are to evaluate cerebral background patterns using amplitude-integrated electroencephalography in newborns with critical congenital heart disease, determine if amplitude-integrated electroencephalography is predictive of preoperative brain injury, and assess the incidence of preoperative seizures. We hypothesize that amplitude-integrated electroencephalography will show abnormal background patterns in the early preoperative period in infants with congenital heart disease that have preoperative brain injury on magnetic resonance imaging. METHODS: Twenty-four newborns

[Impact of thoracic irradiation on cardiac structures].

Thoracic irradiation requires protection of the heart as an organ at risk of complications. The mean heart dose is the most studied dosimetric parameter in the literature. Recent studies question its relevance in view of the multiplicity of cardiac injuries, the heterogeneity of the cardiac dose distribution and the current technical possibilities to refine cardiac dosimetric protection. The objective of this literature review is to analyze the available scientific data on the impact of the dose received by the cardiac substructures. A search of articles using the PubMed search engine was used

[Severe left heart failure long after acquired arteriovenous fistula].

Gunshot wounds and traumatic injuries are the main causes of acquired arteriovenous fistulas. The high cardiac output associated with such fistulas depends mainly on the size of the pathological communication and the degree of reduction in the systemic vascular resistance that results. Since the findings on cardiac examination in these patients may mimic those of valvular heart disease or dilated cardiomyopathy, careful attention should be paid to noncardiac physical findings, such as thrill and/or continuous murmur over the traumatic or surgical scar. We describe a 64-year-old man who develop
