Effect of neuromuscular blocking drugs on arterial pressure and heart rate in rats.

The effects of neuromuscular blocking drugs on mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) were studied in rats which were anaesthetised, tracheotomized and ventilated artificially. The arterial pressure was recorded from the carotid artery. Seven neuromuscular blocking drugs were injected intravenously at doses of 1, 5, and 25 mumol/kg. d-Tubocurarine, alcuronium and vecuronium lowered MAP in a dose dependent manner (maximum 40%). Succinylcholine, 1 mumol/kg, reduced MAP and HR, whereas the two larger doses increased them. Gallamine, 25 mumol/kg, or metocurine and pancuronium, 1 or 5 mum…

Post-cough heart rate response: influence of age, sex, and basal blood pressure.

Although the chronotropic response to cough may provide an index of the capacity for cardioacceleration, how the heart rate change may be influenced by age is not established. In 213 healthy men and women aged 20-90 yr we measured the heart rate response following three forceful coughs performed over a 3-s period. Resting heart rate was not age related. Increasing age was associated with a linear reduction in cough-induced maximum rise in heart rate (r = -0.58, P less than 0.0001) and a prolongation of the time to peak heart rate (P less than 0.001). The responses were not different between wo…

Control of heart rate by carotid body chemoreceptors during diving in tufted ducks.

Previous work has shown that during forcible submersion of domestic ducks there is a gradual reduction in heart rate to 10-20% of its predive value after 45-60 s. Bilateral denervation of the carotid body chemoreceptors abolishes most of this bradycardia. By use of implanted radio transmitters it has been shown that in free-swimming tufted ducks, Aythya fuligula, there is an immediate reduction in heart rate, on spontaneous diving, from an elevated predive level. It then increases for a few seconds before it stabilizes at a level similar to that recorded when the duck is swimming fairly vigoro…

The effect of magnesium sulfate on fetal heart rate variability and uterine activity.

The effect of magnesium sulfate on fetal heart rate (FHR) variability and uterine activity is evaluated in 19 preeclamptic patients at term in active labor. Magnesium sulfate was given by intramuscular injection in nine patients and by intravenous infusion in 10 patients after an intravenous loading dose over a period of 15 minutes. No significant change was noted in FHR variability. There was only a transient, mild decrease in the frequency of uterine contractions during the magnesium sulfate loading dose, and there was no significant change in the intensity of uterine contractions. The concl…

Effects of electronic fetal heart rate monitoring on perinatal outcome and obstetric practices.

Perinatal outcome and obstetric practices during 1970 and 1977 were compared. None of the 6,740 fetuses delivered with birth weights of 1,000 gm or greater in 1970 had electronic fetal monitoring (EFM). In 1977, 5,987 of 8,174 fetuses delivered had EFM (72.7%). High-risk factors were significantly more frequent in the pregnant patient population in 1977. The incidence of intrapartum stillbirths and severe birth asphyxia was significantly lower in 1977. These reductions remained significant when corrected for changes in obstetric practices other than EFM as well as for changes in patient popula

Changes of heart rate during administration of local anesthetics in the oral region.

In an attempt to clarify the mechanism of shock in dental patients, the effects on the heart rate of the injection of an anesthetic agent into the oral mucosa were studied. The heart rates of the subjects decreased by an average of 12.6% during infiltration anesthesia, which was greater than that induced by the mandibular block or breathholding. The response was completely blocked by general anesthesia and partially blocked by inhalation of nitrous oxide and oxygen or previous administration of atropine, indicating the possible participation of trigeminal-vagal reflex in producing these change…

Control of cardiac chronotropic function in patients after heart transplantation: effects of ivabradine and metoprolol succinate on resting heart rate in the denervated heart.

BACKGROUND: Patients after heart transplantation (HTX) present with sinus tachycardia due to graft denervation. As elevated heart rates negatively affect survival, the aim of this study was to analyze the effects of ivabradine vs metoprolol succinate on heart rate, left ventricular (LV) mass and survival following HTX. METHODS: This observational retrospective single-center study assessed 84 patients continuously receiving either ivabradine (n = 40) or metoprolol succinate (n = 44) within 2 years after HTX. Patients with dual therapy (ivabradine and metoprolol succinate), other beta blockers,…

Serial changes of L wave according to heart rates in a heart failure patient with persistent atrial fibrillation.

Mid-diastolic forward flow velocity of transmitral flow (L wave) is known as a marker of diastolic dysfunction and is occasionally observed in patients with fluid retention, low heart rate, and atrial fibrillation (AF). However, how hemodynamic condition affects L wave is still unknown. An 81-year-old woman who underwent implantation of a DDD pacemaker due to complete atrioventricular block 38 years previously suffered from congestive heart failure and was admitted to our hospital. At the time of admission, electrocardiogram showed new-onset AF resulting in mode switch to VVI, and echocardiogr…

Getting to the Heart of Emotion Regulation in Youth: The Role of Interoceptive Sensitivity, Heart Rate Variability, and Parental Psychopathology.

Emotion regulation and associated autonomic activation develop throughout childhood and adolescence under the influence of the family environment. Specifically, physiological indicators of autonomic nervous system activity such as interoceptive sensitivity and vagally mediated heart rate variability (HRV) can inform on emotion regulation. Although the effect of parental emotion socialization on emotion regulation appears to be influenced by autonomic processes, research on physiological regulation and the influence of parental factors remains scarce. This study investigated the relationship be…

Survival and allograft rejection rates after combined heart and kidney transplantation in comparison with heart transplantation alone.

BACKGROUND: The role of solid multiorgan transplantation remains to be determined. We compared our experience with combined heart-kidney transplantation (HKT) and heart transplant alone (HT), and assessed patient survival rates and freedom from allograft rejection in these two patient groups. METHODS: We reviewed the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing HKT (n=30) or HT (n=440) between June 1992 and March 2009. Baseline patient characteristics, perioperative factors, incidence of rejection, and survival were examined. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the two groups

Baroreflex control of heart rate at rest and during exercise in microgravity conditions.

One of the most important features of prolonged weightlessness is a progressive impairment of muscular function. Physiological modifications … that are normally operating on the ground. Indeed, an impairment in arterial baroreflex control of heart rate has been reported in the resting state during spaceflight. Moreover, cardiovascular and autonomic responses to exercise have been reported to be either impaired or preserved after simulated or actual microgravity conditions. Differences in results m …

Endogenous oxytocin-linked heart-rate synchrony and social connection during live sports spectatorship.

Oxytocin is a putative pharmacological target for social dysfunction. However, clinical trials of intranasal oxytocin have produced modest and inconsistent effects, motivating the search for naturalistic, non-pharmacological ways to recruit endogenous oxytocin. Here we show that a single session of live collegiate sports spectating is associated with endogenous oxytocin and interpersonal heart-rate (HR) synchrony, both of which were linked to psychological indices of social bonding among casual fans. Sixty adult spectators, including 21 female participants, provided repeated saliva samples for

Advancing entropy analysis for heart rate variability: clinical insights for aging and diabetes.

Heart rate variability (HRV) entropy analysis is an emerging tool for assessing autonomic function, particularly in older and diabetic populations. Traditional HRV metrics, limited in capturing signal complexity, have been supplemented by advanced entropy methods such as multi-scale entropy (MSE), permutation entropy (PermEn), and the baroreflex entropy index (BEI). In this review, we introduce novel entropy indices, including percussion entropy (PercEn), and explore their potential to enhance HRV assessment. Additionally, we discuss the integration of novel data sources, such as pulse wave ve…

MEDiT: A mask-enhanced diffusion transformer model for fetal heart rate signal generation.

Fetal Heart Rate (FHR) signals are widely used in fetal monitoring and maternal-fetal health assessment. However, their acquisition is constrained by ethical limitations, motion artifacts, and signal loss, resulting in limited data availability for intelligent clinical analysis. To address these, this paper proposes a deep generative Data Augmentation (DA) framework for FHR synthesis. Specifically, we propose a Mask-Enhanced Diffusion Transformer model (MEDiT) to model various missing data scenarios and generate high-fidelity FHR signals in data-scarce clinical settings. First, a mask-enhanced…

A prefrontal cortex-hypothalamus circuit for heart rate control in non-human primates.

Humans exhibit changes in heart rate during cognitive and emotional events, and dysregulation of this brain-heart coupling is a hallmark of many psychiatric disorders. Yet, how circuits that regulate cognition exert direct control over heart physiology remains poorly understood, particularly in primates. Here, we identify a prefrontal-hypothalamic circuit that exerts powerful, bidirectional control over heart rate in monkeys. We show that electrical stimulation of a small ventral subregion within the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (area 47/12; a12) evokes rapid and robust decreases in heart r…
