Prevalence and seasonal fluctuations of intestinal parasitic infections in the Nablus area, West Bank of Jordan.

A total of 22,970 stool specimens collected from patients attending the Central Medical Laboratory in the city of Nablus in the period of 1981-1986 were examined for intestinal parasites. Of these 7412 (32.3%) were positive. Entamoeba histolytica (22.9%), Giardia lamblia (7.3%), and Ascaris lumbricoides (5.7%) were the most prevalent intestinal parasites found. Other intestinal parasites present included Hymenolepis nana, Trichomonas hominis, Trichuris trichiura, Taenia saginata, Enterobius vermicularis and Strongyloides stercoralis. Seasonal occurrence of intestinal parasites in the West Bank

Schistosoma mansoni infection in human and nonhuman primates in selected areas of Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: The transmission of schistosomiasis, caused by trematodes of the genus Schistosoma, relies on freshwater snails tha … hod for human participants and direct microscopic examination for NHPs. RESULTS: The prevalence of helminthiasis among the human study population was 42.4% (386/911), and for soil-transmitted helminth infections (A. lumbricoides, hookworms, and T. trichiura) it was 13.4% (122/911). In humans S. mansoni was the predominant parasite, 23.1% (210/911) followed by …

Gastrointestinal zoonoses.

Infectious gastrointestinal diseases affect man and animals throughout the world. Certain etiologic agents (for example, Salmonella spp., Campylobacter jejuni, Yersinia enterocolitica, Cryptosporidia, Strongyloides stercoralis, Echinococcus granulosa) seem to have the potential to be transmitted from pets to people, causing severe disease in the latter. Other agents seem unlikely to be transmitted but may have the potential to be zoonoses. This article discusses proved, suspected, and possible zoonotic agents that may originate from the gastrointestinal tract of dogs and cats.

Long-Tailed Macaques (Macaca fascicularis) in Urban Landscapes: Gastrointestinal Parasitism and Barriers for Healthy Coexistence in Northeast Thailand.

Gastrointestinal parasites have diverse life cycles that can involve people, animals, and the environment (e.g., water and soil), demonstrating the utility of One Health frameworks in characterizing infection risk. Kosumpee Forest Park (Thailand) is home to a dense population of long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) that frequently interact with tourists and local residents. Our study investigated the presence of zoonotic parasites, and barriers to healthy coexistence by conducting stool analysis on macaques (N = 102) and people (N = 115), and by examining risk factors for infection with

Ethnoveterinary practices for treating parasitic diseases in domestic animals among Kyrgyz farmers.

While modern veterinary medicine offers effective treatments, traditional ethnoveterinary practices persist among many farming communities, … erbal remedy reports (HMHRs) involves the utilisation of 56 plant species belonging to 20 families. Helminthiasis was the most frequently mentioned by DPs (1697 URs; 49.9 %), followed by mange (965 URs; 28.6 %), external parasites (594 URs; 17.4 %) and myiasis (maggots in wounds) (89 URs; 2.6 %), other myiasis (58 URs; 1.7 %). High Total IgE Burden among Blood Donors in Côte d'Ivoire (West Africa): Implications for Public Health and Allergy Risk.

INTRODUCTION: In the sub-Saharan area, data regarding total IgE levels particularly among apparently healthy population remain rare. Definin … rs had elevated total IgE. Stool parasite examinations were positive in 18% of blood donors with 2% helminthiasis. There was a significant relationship between age (p = 0.00, correlation coefficient = -0.22), eosinophil count (p = 0.003, correlation coefficient = -0.60), and total IgE indicating that age and eosinophils counts are associated with increased tota …

Endomyocardial involvement in asymptomatic Latin American migrants with eosinophilia related to helminth infection: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Hypereosinophilic syndrome can produce cardiac involvement and endomyocardial fibrosis, which have a poor prognosis. However, there is limited information regarding cardiac involvement among migrants from Latin America with eosinophilia related to helminthiasis. METHODS: We conducted a pilot observational study where an echocardiography was performed on migrants from Latin America with both eosinophilia (>450 cells/μL) and a diagnosis of helminth infection, and on migrants from Latin America without eosinophilia or helminth infection. Microbiological techniques included a stool mi…

A Minimal Kynurenine Pathway Was Preserved for Rhodoquinone but Not for De Novo NAD+ Biosynthesis in Parasitic Worms: The Essential Role of NAD+ Rescue Pathways.

Aims: To determine the role of the kynurenine (KYN) pathway in rhodoquinone (RQ) and de novo NAD+ biosynthesis and whether NAD+ rescue pathw … enzymes of these pathways in helminth lineages, revealing new potential pharmacological targets for helminthiasis. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that a minimal KYN pathway was evolutionary maintained for RQ and not for de novo NAD+ biosynthesis in helminths and shed light on the essentiality of NAD+ rescue pathways in helminths.
