One Health-Key to Adequate Intervention Measures against Zoonotic Risks.

Zoonotic diseases are a heterogenous group of infections transmittable between humans and vertebrate animal species. Globally, endemic and emerging zoonoses are responsible for high social and economic costs. Due to the particular positioning of zoonoses at the human-animal-environment interface, zoonotic disease control is an integral part of One Health, which recognizes the close link between human, animal and ecosystem health. During recent years, the validity of the One Health approach has been recognized by academia and policy makers. However, gaps are still evident, particularly in the i

Advancing gender transformative intersectional science for health justice: An ecosocial analysis.

At a time when health-oriented institutions both globally and nationally are increasingly recognizing the need to support research, interventions and training that engage with analysis of how gendered social systems shape population health, independent of and in conjunction with sex-linked biology, it is essential that this work reject biological essentialism and instead embrace embodied integration. In this essay, guided by the ecosocial theory of disease distribution, I clarify connections and distinctions between biological versus social reproduction and inheritance, underscore the non-equi

Genetic Epidemiology of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency in the Arab World.

A systematic search was implemented using four literature databases (PubMed, Embase, Science Direct and Web of Science) to capture all the causative mutations of Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency (G6PDD) in the 22 Arab countries. Our search yielded 43 studies that captured 33 mutations (23 missense, one silent, two deletions, and seven intronic mutations), in 3,430 Arab patients with G6PDD. The 23 missense mutations were then subjected to phenotypic classification using in silico prediction tools, which were compared to the WHO pathogenicity scale as a reference. These in sil

Microcontroller-based digital lock-in kelvin probe system using a self-resonant piezoelectric buzzer plate.

The vibrating parallel-plate capacitor-based Kelvin probe (KP) technique is a well-established method for measuring the contact potential difference (CPD) between a sample and a reference material, widely used in surface science and device characterization. In the present work, a compact and low-cost KP system is developed using simple and easily accessible electronic components for ambient-condition CPD measurements. A 35 mm diameter piezoelectric buzzer plate is employed for periodic modulation of a metallic reference probe, providing a compact and mechanically rigid alternative to conventio

On the importance of scientific rhetoric in stuttering: a reply to Finn, Bothe, and Bramlett (2005).

PURPOSE: To refute the alleged practice of "pseudoscience" by P. Finn, A. K. Bothe, and R. E. Bramlett (2005) and to illustrate their experimental and systematic bias when evaluating the SpeechEasy, an altered auditory feedback device used in the management of stuttering. METHOD: We challenged the experimental design that led to the seemingly predetermined outcome of pseudoscience rather than science: Limited preselected literature was submitted to a purposely sampled panel of judges (i.e., their own students). Each criterion deemed pseudoscientific was contested with published peer-reviewed

Availability of published evidence on coverage, cost components, and funding support for digitalisation of infectious disease surveillance in Africa, 2003-2022: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The implementation of digital disease surveillance systems at national levels in Africa have been challenged by many factors. These include user applicability, utility of IT features but also stable financial support. Funding closely intertwines with implementations in terms of geographical reach, disease focus, and sustainability. However, the practice of evidence sharing on geographical and disease coverage, costs, and funding sources for improving the implementation of these systems on the continent is unclear. OBJECTIVES: To analyse the key characteristics and availability of
