OBJECTIVE: Perry syndrome (PS) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder with autosomal dominant inheritance caused by point mutations in DCTN1 and characterized by parkinsonism, hypoventilation, weight loss, and psychiatric symptoms. Even though behavioral manifestation is a main feature of PS, detailed neuropsychological assessment was not performed in this cohort. In this study, the neuropsychological profile of individuals from one Polish and one Colombian family are presented.
METHODS: Detailed clinical and neuropsychological data were obtained from Polish and Colombian families. Clinical and

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) is often associated with psychiatric features, although the factors predisposing to the concurrence of these conditions have yet to be determined, especially in younger children. We aimed at defining possible clinical and electroencephalography (EEG) features that may enhance the psychiatric risk in pediatric FLE.
METHOD: We performed a structured psychiatric assessment of 59 children with FLE, using both categorical and dimensional approaches, correlated psychopathology with epilepsy data, and cognitive development.
RESULTS: About 1/3 of

INTRODUCTION: Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), a noninvasive neuromodulation technique, has been demonstrated to improve cognitive function. Recent advances in neuromodulation protocols have introduced an accelerated intervention paradigm, which has shown promising therapeutic outcomes across various noninvasive brain stimulation modalities. Despite these encouraging developments in cognitive enhancement, there remains a significant gap in the literature regarding the potential therapeutic applications of accelerated tACS protocols in substance use disorders.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is caused by the loss of Fragile X-linked mental retardation protein (FMRP), an RNA binding protein that can bind and recognize different RNA structures and regulate the target mRNAs' translation involved in neuronal synaptic plasticity. Perturbations of this gene expression network have been related to abnormal behavioral symptoms such as hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Considering the roles of FMRP in the modulation of mRNA translation, we investigated the differentially expressed genes which might be targeted to revert to normal

OBJECTIVES: Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is becoming a matter of concern around the world. However, the neural mechanism underlying IGD remains unclear. The purpose of this paper is to explore the differences between the neuronal network of IGD participants and that of recreational Internet game users (RGU).
METHODS: Imaging and behavioral data were collected from 18 IGD participants and 20 RGU under a probability discounting task. The independent component analysis (ICA) and graph theoretical analysis (GTA) were used to analyze the data.
RESULTS: Behavioral results showed the IGD particip

In addition to the core psychopathology of bulimia nervosa (BN), patients with BN often show impulsive behavior that has been related to decision making deficits in other patient groups, such as individuals with anorexia nervosa and pathological gamblers. However, it remains unclear whether BN patients also show difficulties in decision making. In this study, 14 patients with BN and 14 healthy comparison subjects, matched for age, gender, education, body mass index, and intelligence, were examined with the Game of Dice Task (M. Brand, E. Fujiwara, et al., 2005), a gambling task that has fixed …

Behavioral impairments in response inhibition and initiation are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and are associated with reduced impulse control. No prior study, however, has investigated the functional correlates of response inhibition in de novo PD. Twenty-one de novo PD patients and 37 matched healthy controls performed a stop-signal task during functional magnetic resonance imaging. The results showed that PD patients, compared with healthy controls, were slower on response initiation but not inhibition. Task-related activation of the response inhibition network, including the inferior

Obese individuals tend to behave more impulsively than healthy weight individuals across a variety of measures, but it is unclear whether this pattern can be altered. The present study examined the effects of a mindful eating behavioral strategy on impulsive and risky choice patterns for hypothetical food and money. In Experiment 1, 304 participants completed computerized delay and probability discounting tasks for food-related and monetary outcomes. High percent body fat (PBF) predicted more impulsive choice for food, but not small-value money, replicating previous work. In Experiment 2, 102

The paper by Sassover and Weinstein (2022) contributes to a timely and complex debate related to the classification of Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD). The recent inclusion of CSBD as an impulse-control disorder in the ICD-11 has generated debate since a competitive view is that CSBD should rather be classified as an addictive disorder. Sassover and Weinstein (2022) reviewed existing evidence and concluded it does not support the conceptualization of CSBD as an addictive disorder. Although we agree regarding the relevance and timely nature of considering the classification of CSBD,

Kleptomania and compulsive buying are important clinical problems. However there is no established treatment for these problems in Japan yet. In this article, we review the available clinical treatments for kleptomania and compulsive buying in Japan. Kleptomania and compulsive buying can be explained by the conditioning theory. These behaviors are reinforced by positive consequences. In particular, the problem behaviors of kleptomania arise because of arousal and tension and are reinforced by the relaxed feeling that follows. Therefore, kleptomania is treated by systematic desensitization. How

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that a two-factor model of impulsivity predicts Substance Use Disorder and Gambling Disorder. We aimed to determine whether a similar factor structure was present for Gaming Disorder (GD) and Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD).
METHODS: Secondary data analysis was conducted on survey responses from 372 participants who had completed a series of questions on facets of impulsivity and their involvement in gaming. Participants were sampled from gaming forums and an online recruitment website. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted on the measures of trait impulsivity

Recent preclinical evidence suggests that repeated exposure to 3, 4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA; "ecstasy") produces long-term reductions in serotonin (5-HT) levels. 5-HT has been implicated in the regulation of mood, anxiety, aggression, impulsivity, and cognition. Accordingly, in the first of two separate studies, these variables were investigated in three groups: (1) MDMA group--recreational ecstasy users (who also used other illicit substances); (2) polydrug controls--who had never taken ecstasy, but otherwise had drug histories and personal characteristics similar to the ecstasy

Kohlschütter-Tönz Syndrome is a rare disorder clinically characterized by amelogenesis imperfecta, epilepsy and progressive mental deterioration. We present an additional case of this syndrome of a nine year-old boy who was referred by pigmented teeth. The mental deterioration was associated with speech delay, impulsive behavior, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and learning problems. The physical examination revealed a reduction of lower third, slightly palpebral fissures, low ear and hair implantation, coarse hair and hypertrichosis. The intraoral examination showed alteration in te…

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders, particularly bulimia nervosa, have long been associated with alcohol and illicit drug abuse. Impulsivity has been linked to substance abuse, but there are other explanations for this association. This comorbidity could be very harmful, even deadly, because of the medical consequences of drug abuse.
METHOD: This article reports on the case of a 23-year-old woman with bulimia nervosa, severe alcohol and illicit drug abuse, and impulsive behavior who developed rhabdomyolysis. One of the reasons for her drug addiction was the effect of these substances in appetite sup…

The authors report the final results of a 4-year study of amitriptyline and haloperidol in 90 symptomatic borderline inpatients. Medication trials were double-blind and placebo controlled and lasted 5 weeks. Haloperidol (4-16 mg/day) produced significant improvement over placebo in global functioning, depression, hostility, schizotypal symptoms, and impulsive behavior. Significant effects of amitriptyline (100-175 mg/day) were generally limited to measures of depression. Factor analysis identified three symptom change patterns: a global depression, hostile depression, and schizotypal symptom p…

Impulsivity is a personality trait of high impact and is connected with several types of maladaptive behavior and psychiatric diseases, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, alcohol and drug abuse, as well as pathological gambling and mood disorders. Polymorphic variants of the SNAP-25 gene emerged as putative genetic components of impulsivity, as SNAP-25 protein plays an important role in the central nervous system, and its SNPs are associated with several psychiatric disorders. In this study we aimed to investigate if polymorphisms in the regulatory regions of the SNAP-25 gene ar

INTRODUCTION: Low birth weight is associated with obesity and an increased risk for metabolic/cardiovascular diseases in later life.
RESULTS: The results of the snack delay test, which encompassed four distinct trials, indicated that the gender × intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) × trial interaction was a predictor of the ability to delay the food reward (P = 0.002). Among children with normal birth weights, girls showed a greater ability to delay food rewards than did boys (P = 0.014).In contrast, among children with IUGR, there was no such differential ability between girls and boys.
