"Health Comes First": Action Tendencies to Health-Related Stimuli in People with Health-Anxiety as Revealed by an Emotional Go/No-Go Task.

The processing of health-related stimuli can be biased by health anxiety and anxiety sensitivity but, at the moment, it is far from clear whether health-related stimuli can affect motor readiness or the ability to inhibit action. In this preliminary study, we assessed whether different levels of health anxiety and anxiety sensitivity affect disposition to action in response to positive and negative health-related stimuli in non-clinical individuals. An emotional go/no-go task was devised to test action disposition in response to positive (wellness-related), and negative (disease-related) stimu

Neighborhood-Level Influences and Adolescent Health Risk Behaviors in Rural and Urban Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review.

The impact of neighborhoods on adolescent engagement in health-risk behaviors (HRBs), such as substance use and sexual activity, has been well documented in high-income countries; however, evidence from low and middle-income country settings is limited, particularly in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. Neighborhoods and communities in SSA continue to experience urbanization, epidemiologic transition, and the simultaneous presence of large populations living in rurality and urbanicity. This is a dynamic context for exploring adolescent health challenges. This review seeks to identify and sum

Varying Appraisals of Elder Mistreatment Among Victims: Findings from a Population-Based Study.

OBJECTIVES: Prior elder mistreatment (EM) research has not examined subjective assessments of problem seriousness from the perspective of victims. This study sought to describe the variation in appraisals of perceived EM seriousness among victims of emotional abuse, physical abuse, and neglect and to examine factors that influence varying appraisals using neutralization theory. METHODS: Data came from a subsample of EM victims (n = 191) drawn from a representative, population-based study (n = 4,156) of community-dwelling, cognitively intact older adults in New York State. The Conflict Tactics

Isavuconazole Kinetic Exploration for Clinical Practice.

BACKGROUND: Isavuconazole is a new antifungal prodrug for the treatment of invasive aspergillosis and mucormycosis. As no clear pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic relationship has been established for patients, therapeutic drug monitoring is not currently required. However, as isavuconazole is a new drug, clinicians are sometimes sceptical about the exposure achieved in their patients and seek pharmacokinetic exploration. A minimal response consists of determining that the patient's pharmacokinetic profile agrees with profiles reported by Desai et al. using concentrations from the SECURE study.

[Prevention of bipolar disorders].

In the past, preventive measures for psychoses have focused mainly on schizophrenic disorders. Bipolar disorders are often diagnosed and treated with a significant delay. The expansion of preventive measures for bipolar disorders aims at minimizing the substantial negative consequences associated with the disease. Some of the shared aspects of prevention in psychoses and bipolar disorders are that the first symptoms commonly appear during adolescence and early adulthood and that there is a symptomatic overlap between the disorders. To improve efforts to seek early help, public information abou

The association between frontal-striatal connectivity and sensorimotor control in cocaine users.

BACKGROUND: In addition to cognitive and emotional processing dysfunction, chronic cocaine users are also impaired at simple sensorimotor tasks. Many diseases characterized by compulsive movements, repetitive actions, impaired attention and planning are associated with dysfunction in frontal-striatal circuits. The aim of this study was to determine whether cocaine users had impaired frontal-striatal connectivity during a simple movement task and whether this was associated with sensorimotor impairment. METHODS: Functional MRI data were collected from 14 non-treatment seeking cocaine users and

Cancer survivorship: history, quality-of-life issues, and the evolving multidisciplinary approach to implementation of cancer survivorship care plans.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: To discuss the history of cancer survivorship, related quality-of-life issues, and cancer survivorship care plans (CSCPs). DATA SOURCES: CINAHL, PubMed, published articles, and Web sites. DATA SYNTHESIS: A cancer survivor is an individual who has been diagnosed with cancer, regardless of when that diagnosis was received, who is still living. Cancer survivorship is complex and involves many aspects of care. Major areas of concern for survivors are recurrence, secondary malignancies, and long-term treatment sequelae that affect quality of life. Four essential components of

Unpacking weight management interventions measuring eating disorder risk in adults: coding of components of interventions in a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Adult weight management interventions are complex; better understanding of the intervention components that may impact eating disorder (ED) risk is required. METHODS: Weight management randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for adults with overweight/obesity that measured ED risk were systematically searched in four databases and two trial registries. A project-specific codebook was used to code 84 delivery features and 89 intervention strategies of trials. Individual strategies were grouped into 20 clusters which were further grouped into five broad categories. Trial investigators

Integration of an Electronic Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment Program Into an HIV Testing Program to Reduce Substance Use and HIV Risk Behavior Among Men Who Have Sex With Men: Protocol for Intervention Development and a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionally affected by HIV and drug and alcohol use; however, few effective HIV prevention interventions for MSM who use substances exist. Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment is an early intervention for non-treatment-seeking individuals with problematic substance use and for timely referral to treatment for those with substance use disorders. Electronic screening and brief interventions (e-SBIs) reduce implementation challenges. An e-SBI tailored for MSM at the time of HIV testing might be particularly opportune to st

Health-Related Internet Use and Cyberchondria in Adolescents: Population-Based Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Health-related internet searches are widespread among the general population. Cyberchondria, that is, excessive health-related internet research that leads to emotional stress, showed significant associations with personality traits and psychological symptoms in adult samples. Although adolescents exhibit high levels of internet use, strong interest in health topics, and heightened vulnerability to anxiety symptoms and anxiety disorders, little research has examined cyberchondria in this age group. OBJECTIVE: Based on findings from adult populations, this study is among the first

Challenging Case: New-Onset Hallucinations and Developmental Regression in a Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Nick is a 5-year-old boy who began displaying self-stimulating behaviors and decreased social interactions shortly before turning 3 years. At the age of 3.5 years, he was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder by a local developmental-behavioral pediatrician. His parents recall that the physician described Nick to be "high functioning" and encouraged them to expect that he would attend college and live independently as an adult. Upon receiving the diagnosis, intervention was initiated using an applied behavioral analysis (ABA) approach. With this intervention, he demonstrated initial gains in

Bridging the Crisis Gap: A Scoping Review of Psychological Distress and Help-Seeking Behaviors in Black Americans Using Crisis Hotlines.

Black Americans often rely on 9-1-1 or emergency rooms rather than mental health hotlines, reflecting enduring mistrust in formal crisis response systems. This scoping review synthesizes evidence published between 2010 and 2025 on psychological distress and help-seeking behavior among Black Americans using crisis hotlines, with particular attention to engagement with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Six databases were systematically searched, yielding 1,536 records. Following screening and quality assessment using COVIDENCE and PRISMA-ScR guidelines, ten studies met the inclusion criteria fo

Estimation of the national disease burden of influenza-associated severe acute respiratory illness in Kenya and Guatemala: a novel methodology.

BACKGROUND: Knowing the national disease burden of severe influenza in low-income countries can inform policy decisions around influenza treatment and prevention. We present a novel methodology using locally generated data for estimating this burden. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This method begins with calculating the hospitalized severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) incidence for children <5 years old and persons ≥5 years old from population-based surveillance in one province. This base rate of SARI is then adjusted for each province based on the prevalence of risk factors and healthcare-seeking

Evaluating the Reliability and Accuracy of an AI-Powered Search Engine in Providing Responses on Dietary Supplements: Quantitative and Qualitative Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered search engines has transformed how people access health information. Microsoft Copilot, formerly Bing Chat, offers real-time web-sourced responses to user queries, raising concerns about the reliability of its health content. This is particularly critical in the domain of dietary supplements, where scientific consensus is limited and online misinformation is prevalent. Despite the popularity of supplements in Japan, little is known about the accuracy of AI-generated advice on their effectiveness for common diseases. O

Reducing gambling harm through digital self-help intervention: a pilot study in mild to moderate gambling disorder.

BACKGROUND: Gambling Disorder (GD) is associated with significant personal and social harms, yet most individuals, especially those with mild to moderate symptoms, do not seek treatment. Online interventions offer an accessible and resource-efficient approach, but their cultural fit and feasibility across contexts remain unclear. This study examined the feasibility, engagement, and perceived cultural compatibility of a brief (1-week) Canadian self-directed gambling intervention among Israeli individuals with mild and moderate GD who were not actively seeking treatment. METHOD: A sample of 102

Patient perspectives of pharmacists prescribing HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis: A survey of patients receiving antiretroviral therapy.

BACKGROUND: Groundbreaking new laws granting community pharmacists the authority to prescribe human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medications have the potential to substantially expand PrEP access in high-risk communities. However, whether patients will be accepting of pharmacists as PrEP providers is underexplored within the literature. OBJECTIVES: To assess patient perspectives of pharmacist PrEP prescribing and identify potential barriers to acceptance of pharmacist-prescribed PrEP. METHODS: Adult patients currently receiving antiretroviral therapy for HIV p
