Neuropeptide natalisin regulates reproductive behaviors in Spodoptera frugiperda.

Natalisin (NTL) is a conserved neuropeptide, only present in insects, that has been reported to regulate their sexual activity. In this study, we investigated the involvement of NTL in the reproductive behaviors of a major invasive pest, Spodoptera frugiperda. We identified NTL precursor-encoded transcripts, and evaluated their transcript levels in different stages and tissues of S. frugiperda. The results showed that the NTL transcript level was expressed in both male and female pupae and both male and female adults in the later stage. It was highly expressed in male pupae, 3-day-old male and

NHA1 is a cation/proton antiporter essential for the water-conserving functions of the rectal complex in Tribolium castaneum.

More than half of all extant metazoan species on earth are insects. The evolutionary success of insects is linked with their ability to osmoregulate, suggesting that they have evolved unique physiological mechanisms to maintain water balance. In beetles (Coleoptera)-the largest group of insects-a specialized rectal ("cryptonephridial") complex has evolved that recovers water from the rectum destined for excretion and recycles it back to the body. However, the molecular mechanisms underpinning the remarkable water-conserving functions of this system are unknown. Here, we introduce a transcripto

An insect-inspired asymmetric hinge in a double-layer membrane.

Insect wings are deformable airfoils, in which deformations are mostly achieved by complicated interactions between their structural components. Due to the complexity of the wing design and technical challenges associated with testing the delicate wings, we know little about the properties of their components and how they determine wing response to flight forces. Here, we report an unusual structure from the hind-wing membrane of the beetle Pachnoda marginata. The structure, a transverse section of the claval flexion line, consists of two distinguishable layers: a bell-shaped upper layer and a

Interplay of phytohormones facilitate sorghum tolerance to aphids.

Interactions among phytohormones are essential for providing tolerance of sorghum plants to aphids. Plant's encounter with insect herbivores trigger defense signaling networks that fine-tune plant resistance to insect pests. Although it is well established that phytohormones contribute to antixenotic- and antibiotic-mediated resistance to insect pests, their role in conditioning plant tolerance, the most durable and promising category of host plant resistance, is largely unknown. Here, we screened a panel of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) inbred lines to identify and characterize sorghum tolerance

Induced tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses of broccoli and Arabidopsis after treatment with elicitor molecules.

The plant hormones salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) regulate defense mechanisms capable of overcoming different plant stress conditions and constitute distinct but interconnected signaling pathways. Interestingly, several other molecules are reported to trigger stress-specific defense responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. In this study, we investigated the effect of 14 elicitors against diverse but pivotal types of abiotic (drought) and biotic (the chewing insect Ascia monuste, the hemibiotrophic bacterium Pseudomonas syringae DC 3000 and the necrotrophic fungus Alternaria altern

Irradiation dose response under hypoxia for the application of the sterile insect technique in Drosophila suzukii.

Treating insects with a lower oxygen atmosphere before and during exposure to radiation can mitigate some of the negative physiological effects due to the irradiation. The irradiation of pupae under oxygen-reduced environment such as hypoxia or anoxia is routinely used in the sterile insect technique (SIT) of some tephritid species as it provides radiological protection. This treatment allows to have the sterile pupae already in sealed containers facilitating the shipment. SIT is an environment friendly control tactic that could be used to manage populations of Drosophila suzukii in confined a

First record of translocation in Culicidae (Diptera) mitogenomes: evidence from the tribe Sabethini.

BACKGROUND: The tribe Sabethini (Diptera: Culicidae) contains important vectors of the yellow fever virus and presents remarkable morphological and ecological diversity unequalled in other mosquito groups. However, there is limited information about mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) from these species. As mitochondrial genetics has been fundamental for posing evolutionary hypotheses and identifying taxonomical markers, in this study we sequenced the first sabethine mitogenomes: Sabethes undosus, Trichoprosopon pallidiventer, Runchomyia reversa, Limatus flavisetosus, and Wyeomyia confusa. Ecosystem-Based Incorporation of Nectar-Producing Plants for Stink Bug Parasitoids.

Adult parasitoids of pest insects rely on floral resources for survival and reproduction, but can be food-deprived in intensively managed agricultural systems lacking these resources. Stink bugs are serious pests for crops in southwest Georgia. Provisioning nectar-producing plants for parasitoids of stink bugs potentially can enhance biocontrol of these pests. Knowledge of spatial and temporal availability and distribution of stink bugs in host plants is necessary for appropriate timing and placement of flowering plants in agroecosystems. Stink bugs move between closely associated host plants

Antibacterial peptides in insect vectors of tropical parasitic disease.

The induction and characterization of immune peptides in two groups of medically important insects, the mosquitoes and blackflies, is currently an important research area. Mosquitoes transmit a variety of viral and parasitic diseases including yellow fever, dengue, malaria and lymphatic filariasis. Simuliid black flies are vectors of river blindness. The diseases are together responsible for death and morbidity in millions of people each year. The relationship between inducible peptides and bacterial and parasitic infections in these insects is proving to be a complex one. The identification o

Insecticidal and Repellent Effects of Selected Botanicals against Tribolium Castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) with Reference To their Effect on Detoxifying Enzymes.

The excessive application of various synthetic pesticides led to control difficulties, including insect resistance and environmental contamination. This study aimed to evaluate the insecticidal and repellent activities of twelve botanical powders and aqueous extracts against Tribolium castaneum, with a focus on acetylcholinesterase and glutathione-S-transferase detoxification enzyme activities. Toxicity tests revealed that Azadirachta indica dry powder was the most harmful, having the lowest LD50 value of 2.09% w/w, while in aqueous extract A. indica was the most toxic, with an LC50 of 2.20% a

Impact of waste-derived ethanol on growth and metabolic allocation in black soldier fly larvae: Implications for organic waste treatment.

Insects possess chemosensory signalling systems that elicit coordinated behavioural and physiological responses to chemical stimuli. This study investigates the effects of ethanol (EtOH) exposure on black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) and evaluates its relevance to organic waste valorisation. Behavioural assays show that BSFL are attracted to EtOH and exhibit a stronger preference for direct contact over volatilised EtOH. Dietary EtOH supplementation enhances BSFL growth at concentrations of 1-5%, with larval dry weight increasing by up to 12% relative to the control. Further, EtOH supplementation

Histopathological and cytotoxic changes induced by spinosad on midgut cells of the non-target predator Podisus nigrispinus Dallas (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae).

Broad-spectrum insecticides used in pest control are a risk for non-target insects. Their compatibility to the insecticide spinosad, used in agriculture and forestry as a biological control tool, needs to be evaluated. Podisus nigrispinus Dallas (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) is a predatory bug used in the pest management of agricultural and forest systems where spinosad is also frequently applied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the toxicity, histopathology and cytotoxicity in midgut cells of P. nigrispinus exposed to spinosad. The toxicity test was performed to determine the lethal concen

Oviposition behaviour of Phlebotomus argentipes--a laboratory-based study.

The breeding habitat of sandflies is a little studied and poorly understood phenomenon. More importantly, oviposition behaviour is a largely neglected aspect of sandfly biology and this knowledge gap further undermines our understanding of the biology of sandflies. Pheromones released by the eggs play an important role in identifying good sites for oviposition by female insects. Several recent studies have examined the oviposition pheromone. The present study provides a preliminary report on the oviposition behaviour of Phlebotomus argentipes, the only vector of kala-azar (or visceral leishman

A sterile insect technique pilot trial on Captiva Island: defining mosquito population parameters for sterile male releases using mark-release-recapture.

BACKGROUND: The sterile insect technique (SIT), which involves area-wide inundative releases of sterile insects to suppress the reproduction of a target species, has proven to be an effective pest control method. The technique demands the continuous release of sterilized insects in quantities that ensure a high sterile male:wild male ratio for the suppression of the wild population over succeeding generations. METHODS: For these releases, it is important to determine several ecological and biological population parameters, including the longevity of the released males in the field, the disper

A new tent trap for sampling exophagic and endophagic members of the Anopheles gambiae complex.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito sampling methods are essential for monitoring and evaluating malaria vector control interventions. In urban Dar es Salaam, human landing catch (HLC) is the only method sufficiently sensitive for monitoring malaria-transmitting Anopheles. HLC is labour intensive, cumbersome, hazardous, and requires such intense supervision that is difficulty to sustain on large scales. METHODS: Novel tent traps were developed as alternatives to HLC. The Furvela tent, designed in Mozambique, incorporates a CDC Light trap (LT) components, while two others from Ifakara, Tanzania (designs A an

Replacing a native Wolbachia with a novel strain results in an increase in endosymbiont load and resistance to dengue virus in a mosquito vector.

Wolbachia is a maternally transmitted endosymbiotic bacterium that is estimated to infect up to 65% of insect species. The ability of Wolbachia to both induce pathogen interference and spread into mosquito vector populations makes it possible to develop Wolbachia as a biological control agent for vector-borne disease control. Although Wolbachia induces resistance to dengue virus (DENV), filarial worms, and Plasmodium in mosquitoes, species like Aedes polynesiensis and Aedes albopictus, which carry native Wolbachia infections, are able to transmit dengue and filariasis. In a previous study, the

Research Progress on miRNAs and Artificial miRNAs in Insect and Disease Resistance and Breeding in Plants.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNAs that are expressed in a tissue- and temporal-specific manner during development. They have been found to be highly conserved during the evolution of different species. miRNAs regulate the expression of several genes in various organisms, with some regulating the expression of multiple genes with similar or completely unrelated functions. Frequent disease and insect pest infestations severely limit agricultural development. Thus, cultivating resistant crops via miRNA-directed gene regulation in plants, insects, and pathogens is an important aspect o

Studies of Transgenic Mosquitoes in Disease-Endemic Countries: Preparation of Containment Facilities.

Novel approaches to area-wide control of vector species offer promise as additional tools in the fight against vectored diseases. Evaluation of transgenic insect strains aimed at field population control in disease-endemic countries may involve international partnerships and should be done in a stepwise approach, starting with studies in containment facilities. The preparations of both new-build and renovated facilities are described, including working with local and national regulations regarding land use, construction, and biosafety requirements, as well as international guidance to fill any

Role of side-slip flight in target pursuit: blue-tailed damselflies (Ischnura elegans) avoid body rotation while approaching a moving perch.

Visually guided flight control requires processing changes in the visual panorama (optic-flow) resulting from self-movement relative to stationary objects, as well as from moving objects passing through the field of view. We studied the ability of the blue-tailed damselfly, Ischnura elegans, to successfully land on a perch moving unpredictably. We tracked the insects landing on a vertical pole moved linearly 6 cm back and forth with sinusoidal changes in velocity. When the moving perch changed direction at frequencies higher than 1 Hz, the damselflies engaged in manoeuvres that typically invol
