Perceptions and evaluations of child transgressions and disciplinary techniques in high- and low-risk mothers and their children.

Perceptions and evaluations of children's transgressions (moral, conventional, personal), parental disciplinary actions (power assertion, love withdrawal, induction), and expected outcomes (compliance) were assessed in matched high- and low-risk (for physical abuse) mothers and their children. High-risk mothers and their children evaluated conventional and personal transgressions as more wrong than low-risk mothers and their children. Although both high- and low-risk mothers and their children varied disciplinary responses according to the type of transgression, high-risk mothers used power as

Interpersonal aggressive behaviour and alcohol consumption among young urban adolescents in France.

In order to supplement existing studies of deviant populations (alcoholics, drug addicts, jailed delinquents) and to bring to light the existence of early relationships between aggressiveness and alcohol consumption, an epidemiological survey was carried out among 1601 adolescents (aged 13-16) from a suburban area of Paris. Some types of the aggressive behaviour studied were more socially acceptable--breaking objects, hitting people, fighting--than others--threatening to use or using physical violence to obtain money or objects from people. A majority of the adolescents had already demonstrate

Life response to Crouzon's disease.

This paper describes the life responses of two adult patients with facial deformities associated with untreated Crouzon's disease. Each patient has normal intelligence, and each has two children and close family relatives who exhibit variable degrees of Crouzon's disease. The impact of untreated facial deformity is considered, and recommendations are made for psychosocial management of these patients and their families.

Male transsexuals in the homosexual subculture.

The author describes 20 male transsexuals who differ from most discussed in professional studies and from those in media portrayals in that they live in the male homosexual subculture. Furthermore, interviews with these individuals indicated that transsexuals are no more sexually or socially homogeneous than heterosexuals or homosexuals. In general, these men entered the homosexual subculture in their teens; they knew they were not heterosexual and therefore assumed they must be homosexual. As their gender identity crystallized, homosexual activity became repugnant and they rejected and were r

Interpersonal ethnic-racial discrimination and tobacco products: The moderating role of critical action.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to understand the role of critical action, sociopolitical participation, an essential form of consciousness in the relationship between interpersonal discrimination and the use of tobacco products. METHOD: The present study was part of a more extensive longitudinal study on students' genetic and environmental experiences. To examine these associations, 164 racially minoritized college students (Mage = 19.86, SD = 0.28) were surveyed for this study. RESULTS: Findings indicated that the relation between interpersonal ethnic-racial discrimination (IERD) and to

Hoarding and aggression: Using the voodoo doll task to tease apart associations with direct and displaced aggression.

OBJECTIVES: Hoarding disorder is a debilitating and severe psychiatric condition. Research has implicated interpersonal factors as contributing to the development and maintenance of the disorder. Emerging evidence has suggested that aggression and anger-related concepts may contribute to these interpersonal difficulties, but aggression has only been measured thus far through self-report, which is limited by responding biases. METHODS: In the present study, we examined the associations between self-reported hoarding symptoms and two forms of aggression using both questionnaire measures and a n

Perceived Interpersonal Burdensomeness as a Mediator between Nightmare Distress and Suicidal Ideation in Nightmare Sufferers.

Previous studies have supported the significant association between nightmares and suicidal ideation, but the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. The purpose of the present study was to investigate perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness as mediators in the relationship between nightmare distress and suicidal ideation. This sample consisted of 301 undergraduate students who endorsed experiencing nightmares (mean age 21.87 ± 2.17, 78.1% female). All participants completed questionnaires on nightmare distress (Nightmare Distress Questionnaire), unmet interpersonal needs (Inter

Identity and relatedness as mediators between child emotional abuse and adult couple adjustment in women.

The empirical literature indicates that childhood emotional abuse (CEA) produces long lasting impairments in interpersonal relatedness and identity, often referred to as self-capacities. CEA has also been shown to negatively impact couple functioning. This study examined the role of identity and interpersonal conflicts in mediating the relationship between CEA and women's report of couple adjustment among 184 French Canadian women from the general population. Path analysis revealed that CEA was related to poorer couple adjustment through its impact on dysfunctional self-capacities and the expe

Life stress and psychosomatic symptoms among 14 to 16-year old Finnish adolescents.

School children (N = 2013) completed questionnaires in class on three occasions over a period of 17 months. Life stress data for 12 months were gathered retrospectively in the last questionnaire. Life events and interpersonal problems were associated with psychosomatic symptoms. In terms of change in symptoms, the impact of life events and interpersonal problems was demonstrated in boys but not in girls. Though boys with a history of no events or problems had lower symptom scores than girls, boys with a history of many events or problems caught up with the girls by the end of the follow-up per

Association of Maternal Social Relationships With Cognitive Development in Early Childhood.

IMPORTANCE: This study examines how different types of social network structures are associated with early cognitive development in children. OBJECTIVES: To assess how social relationships and structures are associated with early cognitive development and to elucidate whether variations in the mother's social networks alter a child's early cognitive development patterns. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from 1082 mother-child pairs in the University of Tennessee Health Science Center-Conditions Affecting Neurocognitive Development and Learning and Early Childhoo

Are Interpersonal Relationships Predictors or Outcomes of Psychological Distress in Children With Special Educational Needs.

Psychological distress is more prevalent in adolescents with special educational needs than in typically developing adolescents. Despite previous evidence and theories for the association between interpersonal relationships and psychological distress, longitudinal research is lacking to investigate the temporal association between interpersonal relationships and psychological distress. The two-wave longitudinal study aimed to investigate the reciprocal association between interpersonal relationships and psychological distress in a sample of adolescents with special educational needs. The study…

The Dyadic Influence of Relationship Hope on Family Functioning.

There is a continued need to understand family factors that can promote child well-being and reduce their risks for mental health problems. Drawing from research on family dynamics and using a cross-sectional design, this study examined the association between relationship hope, couple satisfaction, and family functioning using the actor-partner interdependence model (APIM) on dyadic data collected from 537 opposi-gender, ethnically diverse, low-income couples. Results indicated that, while accounting for couple satisfaction as a covariate, women's relationship hope was positively associated w

Systematic Mapping of Relationship-Level Protective Factors and Sexual Health Outcomes Among Sexual Minority Youth: The Role of Peers, Parents, Partners, and Providers.

Sexual minority youth (SMY) experience elevated rates of adverse sexual health outcomes. Although risk factors driving these outcomes are well studied, less attention has been paid to protective factors that potentially promote health and/or reduce negative effects of risk. Many factors within interpersonal relationships have been identified as protective for the sexual health of adolescents generally. We sought to systematically map the current evidence base of relationship-level protective factors specifically for the sexual health of SMY through a systematic mapping of peer-reviewed observa…

Forgiveness as a mediator of the intergenerational transmission of violence.

Bowen Family Systems Theory and Social Learning Theory served as a framework for examining the potential role of offspring maternal forgiveness in the intergenerational transmission (IGT) of violence. Using 285 emerging adults, we tested the hypotheses that higher accounts of witnessed interpersonal violence perpetrated by either parent would relate to increased reports of dating violence, and that offspring's capacity to forgive mothers for current transgressions would mediate this relationship. Witnessing interpersonal violence perpetrated by either parent significantly related to offspring

Gynecologic factors in sexual dysfunction of the older woman.

Older women may experience sexual dysfunction due to many different causes. Some problems related to menopausal hormonal change may be easily treated with estrogen supplements. Other problems involve intricate interpersonal relations between the woman and her sexual partner and may require a combination of medical therapy and sexual counseling. Gynecologic cancer and cancer treatments are often accompanied by problems in sexual functioning. These problems may then impair relations and self-image, leading to a vicious circle of deteriorating social function. Some recommendations for the clinici…

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Violence-Related Emergency Visits: Trend, Seasonality, and Interrupted Time-Series Analysis in Peru, 2015-2024.

Violence is a major public health concern, but long-term hospital-based analyses in Latin America remain scarce. This study examined trends, structural breaks, and seasonality of violence-related emergency visits at the José Casimiro Ulloa Emergency Hospital in Lima, Peru, between 2015 and 2024. A retrospective analysis of 14,570 visits was performed, classifying cases according to the World Health Organization typology into self-inflicted, interpersonal community, and interpersonal family violence. Descriptive statistics were stratified by sex, life stage, migratory status, and pandemic perio

An exploratory study on disinhibition and interpersonal outcomes in daily life.

Disinhibition is a personality trait with broad health implications and has been included in several prominent models of maladaptive personality traits and psychopathology, such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition, Alternative Model of Personality Disorders and the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology. Cross-sectional global self-report and clinical interview research suggests that disinhibition is tightly linked with interpersonal problems, particularly antagonistic problems. However, very little work has examined how individual differences in disin

A randomized clinical trial of cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy for panic disorder with agoraphobia.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) seems to be as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in the treatment of major depression. Because the onset of panic attacks is often related to increased interpersonal life stress, IPT has the potential to also treat panic disorder. To date, a preliminary open trial yielded promising results but there have been no randomized controlled trials directly comparing CBT and IPT for panic disorder. METHOD: This study aimed to directly compare the effects of CBT versus IPT for the treatment of panic disorder with agoraphobia. Ninety-one adult
