Serotonin reuptake inhibitors and breastfeeding: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: The postnatal period represents a critical phase for mothers because of physiological hormonal changes, the increase of emotional reactions and a greater susceptibility for the onset/recrudescence of psychiatric disorders. Despite the evidence of an increasing utilization of antidepressant drugs during breastfeeding, there is still few reliable information on the neonatal safety of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and selective noradrenergic reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) [serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs)] in nursing mothers. The aim of this study is to provide a

Oxytocin treatment in pediatric populations.

The role of endogenous oxytocin as neuromodulator of birth, lactation and social behaviors is well-recognized. Moreover, the use of oxytocin as a facilitator of social and other behaviors is becoming more and more accepted. Many positive effects have been attributed to intranasal oxytocin administration in animals and humans; with current research highlighting encouraging advances in its potential for use in mental health disorders. The new frontier will be investigating the effective use of oxytocin in pediatric populations. Limited animal data is available on this. Large-scale human studies

[Thyroid diseases and pregnancy].

Thyroid diseases in pregnancy must be recognized as a specific challenge for the clinician. Any pregnancy is causing alterations in thyroid hormone metabolism which have to be differentiated from pathologic states of thyroid function. Any thyroid disease of the mother with disturbances in the functional state of the gland could induce an adverse influence on the course of pregnancy. Furthermore, it can be associated with adverse consequences on fetal development. Especially hypothyroidism has to be avoided during pregnancy due to a danger of affected neurocognitive development of the offspring

Left ventricular hypertrophy induced by overnutrition early in life.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Human overnutrition has caused a rise in the prevalence of obesity in recent years. In addition to the deleterious effects of obesity during childhood, the long-term effects in adulthood have also been described. For instance, cardiovascular diseases, particularly left ventricular hypertrophy, and type 2 diabetes are among the diseases associated with a history of obesity. However, it remains uncertain during which period of life this association is established. Several authors have suggested that the early period of life is critical for the emergence of cardiac disorders.

Effects of postnatal dietary choline supplementation on motor regional brain volume and growth factor expression in a mouse model of Rett syndrome.

Nutritional status during pregnancy and lactation can influence behavioral and anatomical characteristics of several neurological disorders in the offspring, including Rett syndrome (RTT). RTT is associated with mutations in the X-linked gene encoding methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MeCp2), a transcriptional repressor that binds methylated DNA. In Mecp2(1lox) mice, a model of RTT, enhancing maternal nutrition through choline supplementation attenuates motor coordination deficits in the mutant offspring. Here, we examine alterations in brain volume and growth factor expression in the cerebellum a

The role of PPAR-γ in memory deficits induced by prenatal and lactation alcohol exposure in mice.

Patients diagnosed with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) show persistent cognitive disabilities, including memory deficits. However, the neurobiological substrates underlying these deficits remain unclear. Here, we show that prenatal and lactation alcohol exposure (PLAE) in mice induces FASD-like memory impairments. This is accompanied by a reduction of N-acylethanolamines (NAEs) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) in the hippocampus specifically in a childhood-like period (at post-natal day (PD) 25). To determine their role in memory deficits, two pharmacologic

Severe illness caused by the products of bacterial metabolism in a child with a short gut.

An 8-year-old boy with a short gut had six episodes of metabolic acidosis and neurological dysfunction over a 1 month period. The neurological features consisted of a depressed conscious state, confusion, aggressive behaviour, slurred speech and ataxia. The organic acid profile of urine demonstrated increased amounts of lactic, 3-hydroxypropionic, 3-hydroxyisobutyric, 2-hydroxyisocaproic, phenyllactic, 4-hydroxyphenylacetic and 4-hydroxyphenyllactic acids. Of the lactic acid 99% was D-lactic acid. The anaerobic gut flora consisted almost entirely of Lactobacilli in unusually large numbers. A c

Treatment of panic and phobic disorders.

The clinical features, pathophysiology, and treatment of panic and phobic disorders are reviewed. Evidence from genetic, epidemiological, biological, and pharmacological studies suggests that phobic and panic disorders differ from other psychiatric illnesses. Dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, causing excessive release of norepinephrine from the locus ceruleus, is implicated in the pathophysiology of these disorders. Overstimulation of the locus ceruleus by yohimbine, sodium lactate, and carbon dioxide can cause feelings of panic and anxiety in both patients with panic disorder and c

Calcium Supplementation in the Indian Context: A Consensus Statement by the Endocrine Society of India Skeletal Health Taskforce.

Optimum intake of calcium is fundamental for skeletal health and additionally plays a role in cardiovascular health, haemostasis, synaptic transmission, and several enzyme-driven metabolic reactions. In several countries, including India, dietary calcium intake is poor, and it is necessary to ensure adequate calcium intake for optimizing musculoskeletal health. Not many guidelines focus on regions where calcium in the diet is suboptimal, and supplementing calcium may be specially relevant. In view of this, the Endocrine Society of India (ESI) Skeletal Task Force has developed clinical practice

Maternal high-salt intake induces sex-specific liver injury in offspring: integrative transcriptomic and therapeutic investigation.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal diet is a key determinant of fetal organ development, and excessive salt intake has been increasingly linked to long-term metabolic disorders. This study investigated the effects of maternal high-salt diet (HSD) on offspring liver health, with a focus on sex-specific structural and molecular alterations. METHODS: Pregnant C57BL/6J mice were fed either standard chow or an HSD (4% NaCl) during gestation and lactation. At 4 weeks of age, offspring livers were analyzed using histology, RNA sequencing, immunofluorescence, and biochemical assays. Connectivity Map (CMap) was a

Impact of Maternal High-Fat Diet on Offspring Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Health: Spotlight on Oxidative Stress.

Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome (CKMS) encompasses interconnected cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic disorders, including obesity, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. Oxidative stress is increasingly recognized as a central driver of this multi-organ dysfunction. Among maternal influences, exposure to a high-fat diet (HFD) during pregnancy and lactation consistently predisposes offspring to CKMS-related phenotypes in animal models. While oxidative stress is implicated as a key mediator, its precise role in developmental programming remains unclear, and comparing the differences in it

Immune-neuroendocrine reactivity and features of tuberculosis in pregnancy.

The combination of tuberculosis and pregnancy always raises questions about therapy, the specialness of management of pregnancy, obstetrics, postpartum period, and lactation; the effect of therapy on fetal development and the peculiarities of the tuberculosis course. Until recently, tuberculosis and pregnancy were considered a rare combination, but with the growing problem of HIV infection and worsening tuberculosis screening among adults, this combination has become quite common. Moreover, cases of congenital tuberculosis in newborns have begun to emerge. In this review, we analyzed features

Chronic maternal exposure to low-dose PM2.5 impacts cognitive outcomes in a sex-dependent manner.

There is no safe level of air pollution for human health. Traffic-related particulate matter (PM2.5) is a major in-utero toxin, mechanisms of action of which are not fully understood. BALB/c dams were exposed to an Australian level of traffic PM2.5 (5 µg/mouse/day, intranasal, 6 weeks before mating, during gestation and lactation). Male offspring had reduced memory in adulthood, whereas memory was normal in female littermates, similar to human responses. Maternal PM2.5 exposure resulted in oxidative stress and abnormal mitochondria in male, but not female, brains. RNA-sequencing analysis showe

Serum metabolomics assessment of etiological processes predisposing ketosis in water buffalo during early lactation.

Metabolic disorders as ketosis are manifestations of the animal's inability to manage the increase in energy requirement during early lactation. Generally, buffaloes show a different response to higher metabolic demands than other ruminants with a lower incidence of metabolic problems, although ketosis is one of the major diseases that may decrease the productivity in buffaloes. The aim of this study was to characterize the metabolic profile of Mediterranean buffaloes (MB) associated with 2 different levels of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB). Sixty-two MB within 50 days in milk (DIM) were enrolled and

Early-Life Environment Influence on Late-Onset Alzheimer's Disease.

With the expand of the population's average age, the incidence of neurodegenerative disorders has dramatically increased over the last decades. Alzheimer disease (AD) which is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease is mostly sporadic and primarily characterized by cognitive deficits and neuropathological lesions such as amyloid -β (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles composed of hyper- and/or abnormally phosphorylated Tau protein. AD is considered a complex disease that arises from the interaction between environmental and genetic factors, modulated by epigenetic mechanisms. Besides

Environmental monitoring and the developmental origins of health and disease.

Early-life chronic exposure to environmental contaminants, such as bisphenol-A, particulate matter air pollution, organophosphorus pesticides, and pharmaceutical drugs, among others, may affect central tissues, such as the hypothalamus, and peripheral tissues, such as the endocrine pancreas, causing inflammation and apoptosis with severe implications to the metabolism. The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) concept articulates events in developmental phases of life, such as intrauterine, lactation, and adolescence, to later-life metabolism and health. These developmental phase

Hepatic DNA methylation modifications in early development of rats resulting from perinatal BPA exposure contribute to insulin resistance in adulthood.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Perinatal exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), a widely distributed environmental endocrine disruptor, is associated with insulin resistance and diabetes in offspring. The underlying molecular mechanisms could involve epigenetics, as adverse effects induced by environmental exposure in early life are suggested through DNA methylation. In this study we sought to elucidate the relationship between perinatal BPA exposure and alteration of hepatic DNA methylation. METHODS: Pregnant Wistar rats were administered BPA (50 μg/kg/day) or corn oil by oral gavage throughout gestation and lact

A psychopharmacological treatment algorithm for generalised anxiety disorder (GAD).

Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) is defined as excessive and uncontrollable worry and anxiety about everyday life situations. It is a chronic disorder, and is associated with substantial somatisation, high rates of comorbid depression and other anxiety disorders, and significant disability. The evidence base for pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy has continued to grow, and a wide range of drug choices for GAD now exists. Current guidelines for GAD generally restrict themselves to presentation of the evidence for various treatments, which, as a result, generally do not offer detailed discussio

A descriptive study of 'kangaroo gait' in sheep in northern Britain.

Two questionnaires were undertaken to obtain improved knowledge of the signalment, incidence and risk factors of the condition termed 'kangaroo gait' (KG; a forelimb locomotor disorder of adult female sheep). The first survey was mailed to 221 veterinary surgeons in practices in northern Britain which provided veterinary care for sheep, and the second was mailed to 438 sheep-flock owners and managers located in the Scottish Borders, who were recruited via their veterinary surgeons. Responses of 84.7 and 30.7% were achieved, respectively. In total, 29.7% of veterinary practices and 24.1% of flo

A risk factor for female fertility and pregnancy: celiac disease.

Celiac disease is a genetically-based intolerance to gluten. In the past, celiac disease has been considered a rare disease of infancy characterized by chronic diarrhea and delayed growth. Besides the overt enteropathy, there are many other forms which appear later in life; target organs are not limited to the gut, but include liver, thyroid, skin and reproductive tract. It is now recognized that celiac disease is a relatively frequent disorder; the overall prevalence is at least 1:300 in Western Europe. Celiac disease may impair the reproductive life of affected women, eliciting delayed puber
