OBJECTIVE: To evaluate spasticity and below-level spinal cord injury neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury in patients with, or without, damage to the lumbar spinal cord and roots.

Hamstring muscle strain is the most prevalent injury in Australian Rules Football, accounting for 16% of playing time missed as a result of injury. Thirty-seven professional footballers from an Australian Football League team had preseason measurements of hamstring and quadriceps muscle concentric peak torque at 60, 180, and 300 deg/sec measured on a Cybex 340 dynamometer. A 58-year-old alcoholic man presents with pain, swelling, and bruising of his right leg, without history of trauma or injury. He had had frequent spontaneous hematomas in his legs. This patient drank a 1.75 liter bottle of vodka daily, smoked cigarettes, and ate mostly precooked hash brown potatoes, pasta, and occasional canned tuna. Most cases of lower leg pain in athletes result from musculoskeletal injury. Occasionally these patients do not respond to treatment in a timely fashion. This should alert the clinician to rethink the original diagnosis and consider more unusual causes of leg pain. Deep venous thrombosis must be considered in a young athletic person experiencing unexplained persistent calf pain after exercise. Further investigation may be necessary to rule out a hereditary or acquired hypercoagulable state.
