Effects of antithrombotic therapy on bleeding after endoscopic sphincterotomy: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background and study aims  Bleeding is a common complication of following endoscopy sphincterotomy (EST), and antithrombotic therapy use during the procedure often increases risk of it. Although several guidelines have been released regarding the use of antithrombotic agents during EST, many issues about it remain controversial. We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of antithrombotic medication on the risk of EST bleeding. Methods  A structured literature search was carried out in Web of Science, EMBASE, PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases. RevMan 5.2 w

Systematic Review on the Effects of Prompt Antibiotic Treatment on Survival in Septic Shock and Sepsis Patients in Different Hospital Settings.

This study aims to determine the impact of prompt administration of antibiotics in evaluating the prognosis of patients with septic shock or sepsis. On January 1, 2022, we searched the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and MEDLINE databases for English-language articles regarding when antibiotics should be administered to patients with septic shock or sepsis. These articles were required to be published between 2010 and 2021. The primary objective was sudden or expected death from any cause at a specified time. In the study, 154,330 patients from 35 sepsis trials were included. In 19 trials, the effec

Necrozoospermia: The tree that hides the forest.

BACKGROUND: Necrozoospermia is a condition found in 0.2%-0.4% of male infertility cases. The causes of necrozoospermia are multiple: they can be related to testicular and/or post-testicular damage. Additionally, these causes most often involve the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and/or sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) which can reduce the chances of spontaneous pregnancy or affect the outcome of assisted reproductive technologies. OBJECTIVE: To focus on potential etiologies of necrozoospermia, its diagnosis and its therapeutic management especially before the employment of ICSI. MET

[Patient education for acute low back pain : Contents of pain education in patients with acute non-specific low back pain - a scoping review].

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the review is to map the content of intervention education in people with acute nonspecific lumbar low back pain (LBP) to make it available in a synopsis. BACKGROUND: In the care of people with acute non-specific LBP, education is recommended as an elementary treatment component. However, the proposed content is proving to be heterogenic and the question arises as to how education should be designed in the future. METHOD: A systematic literature search and content analysis of studies with content on pain education was conducted as part of a scoping review. Inclusi

Inhibition of Chikungunya virus early replication by intracellular nanoantibodies targeting nsP2 Epitope Rich Region.

Chikungunya fever, caused by Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), is an Aedes mosquito-borne disease present worldwide, and millions of CHIKV infections have been reported. Treatment for CHIKV includes supportive care and anti-inflammatory medications, but there are currently no antiviral treatments or vaccines. Nonstructural protein 2 (nsP2) of CHIKV is the most important functional protein mediating virus replication and amplification, making it an ideal antiviral target for CHIKV. In this study, we determined the CHIKV nsP2 Epitope Rich Region, expressed recombinant nsP2 protein, and isolated 5 nsP2-

Prevalence of concurrent headache and temporomandibular disorders: a systematic review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review is to determine the concurrent prevalence of temporomandibular disorders and headaches in patients. INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular disorders affect the temporomandibular joint and associated orofacial structures. It is the second-most common musculoskeletal disorder experienced by adults. Headache is one of the most pervasive neurological disorders and can be an extremely disabling condition. Temporomandibular disorders and headache are known to often occur simultaneously and have a bi-directional relationship due to their close anatomical association.

Are remote clinical assessments a feasible and acceptable method of assessment? A systematic review.

The COVID-19 pandemic presented an enormous and immediate challenge to assessing clinical skills in healthcare professionals. Many institutions were unable to deliver established face-to-face assessment methods such as Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs). Assessors needed to rapidly institute alternative assessment methods to ensure that candidates met the clinical competences required for progression. Using a systematic review, we aimed to evaluate the feasibility, and acceptability of remote methods of clinical skills assessment, including remote structured clinical assessment

Virtual Care in Patients with Cancer: A Systematic Review.

Virtual care in cancer care existed in a limited fashion globally before the COVID-19 pandemic, mostly driven by geographic constraints. The pandemic has required dramatic shifts in health care delivery, including cancer care. We conducted a systematic review of comparative studies evaluating virtual versus in-person care in patients with cancer. Embase, APA PsycInfo, Ovid MEDLINE, and the Cochrane Library were searched for literature from January 2015 to 6 August 2020. We adhered to PRISMA guidelines and used the modified GRADE approach to evaluate the data. We included 34 full-text publicati

From Vietnamese plants to a biflavonoid that relieves inflammation by triggering the lipid mediator class switch to resolution.

Chronic inflammation results from excessive pro-inflammatory signaling and the failure to resolve the inflammatory reaction. Lipid mediators orchestrate both the initiation and resolution of inflammation. Switching from pro-inflammatory to pro-resolving lipid mediator biosynthesis is considered as efficient strategy to relieve chronic inflammation, though drug candidates exhibiting such features are unknown. Starting from a library of Vietnamese medical plant extracts, we identified isomers of the biflavanoid 8-methylsocotrin-4'-ol from Dracaena cambodiana, which limit inflammation by targetin

Transcriptome sequencing of archived lymphoma specimens is feasible and clinically relevant using exome capture technology.

Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) specimens are an underutilized resource in medical research, particularly in the setting of transcriptome sequencing, as RNA from these samples is often degraded. We took advantage of an exome capture-based RNA-sequencing protocol to explore global gene expression in paired fresh-frozen (FF) and FFPE samples from 16 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients. While FFPE samples generated fewer mapped reads compared to their FF counterparts, these reads captured the same library complexity and had a similar number of genes expressed on average. Furth

Hyperandrogenism? Increased 17, 20-Lyase Activity? A Metanalysis and Systematic Review of Altered Androgens in Boys and Girls with Autism.

Introduction: There is increasing evidence that steroid hormone levels and, especially, androgen levels are elevated in autism. An overactivity of 17, 20-lyase with a higher production of the testosterone precursors dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and androstenedione/androstenediol seems especially present in autism. Methods: An encompassing literature analysis was performed, searching for altered androgens in children with autism and using preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Included were all studies published before 31 March 2021 found using
