Phonetic features by babies with unilateral cleft lip and palate.

Twenty-three babies with nonsyndromic unilateral cleft lip and palate were audiotaped at regular intervals from 5 to 35 months of age. Narrow phonetic transcription of their comfort-state vocalizations and word approximations was accomplished to describe phonetic development over time and according to the nonrandomized age of palatoplasty. The babies that had earlier palatal repair produced significantly higher percentages of oral stops after 12 months of age than babies with similar clefts that had later palatal repair. No significant differences are evident, however, according to age of pala…

Radiological survey of the cervical spine in cleft lip and palate.

Cleft lip and palate is known to be associated with a number of other skeletal anomalies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of possible malformations of the cervical spine and their relationship to velopharyngeal incompetence. The lateral cephalometric radiographs of 30 patients aged between 14 and 27 years of age with cleft lip and palate were compared with these of a control group, who had been involved in cycle accidents. The radiographs were assessed for morphological anomalies of the first and second cervical vertebrate and, in addition, longitudinal and angular …

Orthognathic surgery for the treatment of chronic self-mutilation of the lips.

Self-mutilation by lip chewing is an uncommon problem, but may result in severe mutilation, infection and loss of tissue, with associated scarring. Many modalities of treatment have been proposed in the literature with variable success and morbidity to the patient. Alternative techniques involving orthognathic surgery to create an anterior open bite are described which may result in cessation of self-mutilation. A case is presented with a 13-year follow-up, the anterior open bite is still present, and no recurrence of self-mutilation.

A study of cutaneous leishmaniasis involvement of the lips and perioral tissues.

A study of the involvement of lips and the perioral tissues, by cutaneous leishmaniasis among 492 patients diagnosed to have been affected by the disease at a district general hospital in the Southwest highlands of Saudi Arabia over a period of 18 months is presented together with clinical and diagnostic aspects of such involvement. Differential diagnosis and methods of treatment are briefly discussed. The need for oral and dental surgeons to be acquainted with this not too uncommon condition is stressed.

Congenital heart anomalies in patients with clefts of the lip and/or palate.

The nature and severity of congenital heart disease in 78 patients who presented with clefts of the lip and/or palate is reported. The prevalence of bilateral cleft lip and palate in patients with heart lesions was much higher than in cleft patients with normal hearts. Cardiac defects were predominantly conotruncal. Tetralogy of Fallot was present in 24 percent of patients; the prevalence of transposition, atrioventricular septal defect, and truncus arteriosus was also disproportionately high. Patients with conotruncal defects had a greater prevalence of either unilateral or bilateral cleft li…

Median clefting of the upper lip associated with cutaneous polyps.

Details are presented of a patient with median clefting of the upper lip and cutaneous polyps. Four similar published case reports are considered to share the same condition. The spectrum of the disorder encompassed by these five cases is discussed.

[Craniofacial morphology of parents with cleft lip and palate children].

In order to elucidate their cranial and facial morphological features, frontal and lateral cephometric analysis was made of parents of 86 children with cleft lip with or without cleft palate [CL (P)] and 14 children with cleft palate (CP). Similar analysis was made of 30 control male and female volunteers who demonstrated no maxillofacial anormalies and had no blood relatives affected by CL(P) or CP. In addition, discriminative analysis was performed. Results (1) Maximum cranial breadth values in the 4 parent groups, both father groups [CL(P)-F, CP-F] and mother groups [CL(P)-M, CP-M] were low…

Glomus tumor of the lip. A case report and immunohistochemical study.

A rare glomus tumor of the lip is reported and--with nineteen glomus tumors from other sites--examined immunohistochemically with both monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies. In every case, the glomus cells showed strong reactivity with antivimentin, and factor VIII-related antigen was consistently identified in the endothelial cells but not in the glomus cells. Antiblood group A antigen was located in endothelial cells in nine cases; of these nine, five also showed focal staining in glomus cells. In no case was there reactivity with antibodies to common leukocyte antigen or cytokeratin proteins…

A review of tooth formation in children with cleft lip/palate.

The literature on tooth formation in children with cleft lip and/or palate is reviewed. The main focus of interest is the association of cleft type and dental abnormalities in number, size, shape, timing of formation, and eruption and cause of the abnormalities. The upper lateral incisor is the most susceptible to injury in the area of cleft in both deciduous and permanent dentitions. This tooth is affected in most instances, even in the cases of microforms of the cleft lip. The prevalence of hypodontia increases strongly with the severity of cleft. More teeth are congenitally missing from the…

[A case of lateral cleft lip. Embryology and surgical technic].

Lateral labial cleft is exceptionally rare. This malformation gives the opportunity to evaluate its origin (following the embryology of facial segments) and its association with other deformities. Surgical treatment must reconstruct an anatomic and functional situation which must give a good aestetic result.

Evaluation of 5-fluorouracil in the treatment of actinic keratosis of the lip.

Topically applied 5-fluorouracil has recently gained acceptance in the treatment of actinic keratosis of the lip; however, histologic evidence confirming the effectiveness of the therapy has not yet been established. Pretreatment biopsies were performed on six patients to confirm actinic damage and grade the degree of dysplasia. After 5-fluorouracil therapy, biopsies of tissue adjacent to the previous biopsy sites were performed to determine the success of treatment. Histologic evaluation showed residual dysplasia in all posttreatment biopsy material, even though the clinical stigmata of the a…

Genetic counselling and genetics of cleft lip and cleft palate.

Modern neonatal care and advanced plastic surgical correction have led to the survival of most newborns with oral clefts. These children are likely to reproduce. A slight increase in the incidence of oral clefts may be expected in the future. The genetics of cleft lip and cleft palate is reviewed. The inheritance is usually multifactorial. With normal parents the risk of having a first affected child with cleft lip is about one per thousand, the risk of having a second affected child 4 per cent and the risk of having a third affected child 10 per cent. If a parent has already a cleft lip, the …
