In oral cancer, loss of function due to surgery can be unacceptable, designating the tumour as functionally inoperable. Other curative treatments can then be considered. Currently, predictions of these functional consequences are subjective and unreliable. We want to create patient-specific models to improve and objectify these predictions. Reconstruction of oral commissure defects aims at securing oral competence and providing an acceptable appearance. Microstomia is defined as an abnormal small oral orifice. Burns and injuries of perioral tissues, perioral surgeries, and genetic disorders can lead to perioral scar formations and restrict mouth opening. On the basis of previously published pedigrees, as well as the present case, data are presented that conclusively support an X-linked dominant mode of inheritance. Segregation analysis demonstrated that not only is there lethality in the male but there is significant lethality in the female due to lyonization. In addition, a review of the familial cases will demonstrate a large degree of intra- and interfamilial variation.

CDH1 mutation carriers have a strongly increased risk of developing gastric cancer (GC) and lobular breast cancer (LBC). Clinical data of GC cases and surgical and histological data of prophylactic gastrectomies and mastectomies of all 10 Dutch CDH1 mutation families were collected. BACKGROUND: Abrikossoff or granular cell tumour (GCT) is a relatively rare neoplasia, benign in most of the cases. It may occur in any part of the human body, but it has an oral location in 70% of the cases. Its origin has been discussed for decades, and it is not yet definitively determined. BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was for us to present our analysis of the results and prognostic factors in squamous lip carcinoma treated with high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy.
METHODS: From 1999 to 2010, 102 patients were treated with HDR-brachytherapy, 54 with T1, 33 with T2, and 15 with T4. Eight cases were N+. Twenty-one patients were treated with surgery plus brachytherapy because of close/positive margins. Nine fractions of 5 Gy were given over 5 days in 67% of the patients. Elective neck treatment was performed in 23 cases.
RESULTS: The 10-year actuarial local control was 94.

Melanoma of the lip is a very rare clinical entity. As such, no large studies are available to help in diagnosis and treatment. We report our results on 11 patients with lip melanoma. Patients with lip melanoma should be approached in a similar fashion to patients with other cutaneous melanomas.
