Teratologic evaluation of hexabrominated naphthalenes in C57BL/6N mice.

Hexabrominated naphthalenes (HBNs) have been identified as contaminants in the commercial PBB mixture, Firemaster. Similarities between polyhalogenated naphthalenes and polyhalogenated biphenyls, dibenzofurans, and dibenzo-p-dioxins with regards to structure and capacity to elicit certain toxicological responses in laboratory animals have previously been evaluated. In this study, teratogenicity and embryo/fetal toxicity, which have been associated with maternal exposure to other toxic polyhalogenated aromatics, was characterized for a synthetic mixture of HBNs in C57BL/6N mice. Pregnant adult

Ethanol and/or radiofrequency ablation to treat venolymphatic malformations that manifest as a bulging mass in the head and neck.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound (US)-guided ethanol ablation (EA) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for treating venolymphatic malformations (VLM) of the head and neck. MATERIALS AND METHODS: US-guided EA and/or RFA were performed on 17 patients with VLM of the head and neck. Computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to locate the cranial nerves and salivary gland ducts that were close to targets, and these were avoided during the procedures. Treatment response was assessed using volume reduction and cosmetic grading scoring. RESULTS: Nine VLMs were lo

Multidisciplinary therapeutic strategy with appropriate timing and modalities for treating cervicofacial lymphatic malformations in children.

PURPOSE: The study reviewed a multidisciplinary approach to treating cervicofacial lymphatic malformations (CFLMs) in children. METHODS: Between 2007 and 2023, 53 children with CFLMs were treated with the median on-set age of 5 months (0-165) at our institute. For infants, airway management, including possible tracheotomy was prioritized, and a "wait-and-see" policy was adopted to expect spontaneous regression. Once children reached one year of age or diagnosed after infancy, OK-432 sclerotherapy and surgical treatment with/without sirolimus were considered for residual lesions. RESULTS: The

Vascular Anomalies: From a Clinicohistologic to a Genetic Framework.

BACKGROUND: Vascular anomalies currently are classified according to their clinical and histological characteristics. Recent advances in molecular genetics have enabled the identification of somatic mutations in most types of vascular anomalies. The purpose of this study was to collate information regarding the genetic basis of vascular anomalies. METHODS: The PubMed literature was reviewed for all citations that identified a mutation in a vascular anomaly between 1994 and 2017. Search terms included "vascular anomaly," "mutation," "gene," "hemangioma," "pyogenic granuloma," "kaposiform heman

Presternal dermoid cyst mimicking lymphatic malformation: a case report and review of the literature.

We describe an 11-month-old boy with an unusually large presternal mass present since birth. The large size, fluctuant properties, transillumination, compressibility, and imaging of this lesion were characteristic of a lymphatic malformation. Although four treatments with sclerotherapy markedly reduced its size, it was not until definitive treatment with surgical excision and the final pathology report that we arrived at the ultimate diagnosis of dermoid cyst. Dermoid cysts, although appearing along embryologic lines of closure, are rarely presternal. They are usually small, thick walled, and

Pediatric neck masses.

The majority of neck masses in the pediatric population are congenital or inflammatory in origin requiring a thorough understanding of embryology and anatomy of the cervical region. However, malignancy must always be ruled out as they represent 11%-15% of all neck masses in the pediatric population. The initial history and physical are of utmost important to correctly work-up and eventually diagnose the lesion. This article addresses many aspects of the workup, diagnosis and eventual proper surgical or medical management of pediatric neck masses.

Lymphatic and venous malformation or "lymphangiohemangioma" of the anterior mediastinum: case report and literature review.

Lymphatic and venous malformations (LVM) are tumor-like lesions combining dysplastic lymphatic and venous vessel structures. They are rarely found in the mediastinum. We present a case of mediastinal LVM, with review of the literature. An asymptomatic 60-yearold man presented for evaluation of an anterior mediastinal mass. On chest computed tomography (CT), the mass demonstrated contrast enhancement and its 7-mm vein draining directly into the left brachiocephalic vein. The tumor was resected completely using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. The surgical specimen revealed combined feature

More than malaria: Exploring Babesia, Leishmania and Trypanosoma in sickle cell disease.

Vector-borne parasites, such as species of Babesia, Trypanosoma, and Leishmania, are emerging and re-emerging causes of infectious diseases that contribute substantially to global morbidity and mortality. Epidemiological shifts, such as expansion of arthropod vector ranges, increased international travel, and transfusion-associated transmission, have amplified their public health impact. A key distinction among these parasites is their localization within the host. Babesia spp. infect erythrocytes, Leishmania spp. reside within macrophages, and Trypanosoma cruzi invades muscle cells, whereas T

A Retrospective Study on the Incidence, Mortality, and Risk Factors of Hodgkin Lymphoma in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is a type of cancer that affects lymphatic tissues and is marked by the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells, which are large, abnormal lymphocytes. Involvement of the head and neck region is a prominent feature in HL, often serving as the initial clinical presentation of the disease. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of the study is to find the incidence, mortality rate, and risk factors for HL in the Pakistani population. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted with 50 patients diagnosed with HL across three cancer treatment centers in Pakistan. Data were col

Activated cancer-associated fibroblasts correlate with poor survival and decreased lymphocyte infiltration in infiltrative type distal cholangiocarcinoma.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts promote tumor progression through growth facilitation, invasion, and immune evasion. This study investigated the impact of activated cancer-associated fibroblasts (aCAFs) on survival outcomes, immune response, and molecular pathways in distal bile duct (DBD) cancer. We analyzed 469 patients (418 from our cohort and 51 from The Cancer Genome Atlas) with DBD adenocarcinoma. aCAFs were evaluated using hematoxylin and eosin staining. We developed a machine learning-based survival prediction model incorporating aCAFs and clinicopathologic parameters. Additionally, we p

Atypical Presentation of B-Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma: Solitary Scalp Mass in a Pediatric Patient.

B-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma (B-LBL) is a subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma characterized by the proliferation of abnormal B-cell lymphoblasts in lymphoid tissues. Typical presentations include lymphadenopathy, mediastinal mass, and involvement of organs such as the liver and spleen, but extranodal sites can also be affected. A previously healthy 20-month-old male child presented to the pediatric surgery clinic with a two-month history of a painless, progressively enlarging mass on the scalp as well as postauricular mass consistent with an enlarged lymph node. Ultrasound of the mass near the ve

Natural history of acid sphingomyelinase deficiency among European patients during childhood and adolescence: A retrospective observational study.

Acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD) is a rare, lysosomal storage disease with limited evidence on its natural history. This retrospective, medical record abstraction study aimed to characterize the natural history of ASMD (types B and A/B) during childhood and adolescence. Recruiting sites were European centers (i.e., France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom) from the ASCEND-Peds trial (NCT02292654); these sites were targeted because of the rarity of ASMD and specialized care provided at these centers. The study population comprised ASMD trial patients (before exposure to treatment)

Thoracic duct cannulation during left internal jugular vein cannulation: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Central venous catheter insertion is an invasive procedure that can cause complications such as infection, embolization due to air or blood clots, pneumothorax, hemothorax, and, rarely, chylothorax due to damage to the thoracic duct. Herein, we report a case of suspected thoracic duct cannulation that occurred during left central venous catheter insertion. Fortunately, the patient was discharged without any adverse events related to thoracic duct cannulation. CASE SUMMARY: A 46-year-old female patient presented at our department to undergo cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic in

Uncovering the complex role of interferon-gamma in suppressing type 2 immunity to cancer.

Cancer involves cells' abnormal growth and ability to invade or metastasize to different body parts. Cancerous cells can divide uncontrollably and spread to other areas through the lymphatic or circulatory systems. Tumors form when malignant cells clump together in an uncontrolled manner. In this context, the cytokine interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) is crucial in regulating immunological responses, particularly malignancy. While IFN-γ is well-known for its potent anti-tumor effects by activating type 1 immunity, recent research has revealed its ability to suppress type 2 immunity, associated with all

Comprehensive Analyses of Coagulation Parameters in Patients with Vascular Anomalies.

BACKGROUND: Vascular anomalies comprise a diverse group of rare diseases with altered blood flow and are often associated with coagulation disorders. The most common example is a localized intravascular coagulopathy in venous malformations leading to elevated D-dimers. In severe cases, this may progress to a disseminated intravascular coagulopathy with subsequent consumption of fibrinogen and thrombocytes predisposing to serious bleeding. A separate coagulopathy is the Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon in kaposiform hemangioendothelioma characterized by platelet trapping leading to thrombocytopenia
