UNLABELLED: Deficiencies of micronutrients (zinc, iron, folic acid and iodine) during pregnancy are known causes of Low Birth Weight (LBW). Studies have documented status of one or two micronutrients amongst pregnant women (PW). However, no attempt has been made to concurrently assess the prevalence of multiple micronutrient deficiencies and the factors associated with them amongst PW.
OBJECTIVE: The present study was undertaken to assess the prevalence of multiple micronutrient deficiencies amongst PW in a rural area.
METHODS: A community based cross sectional survey was conducted in six vi

Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a basal AIN-76 diet containing 80, 200, 350, 500 or 650 mg of magnesium per kilogram of diet for 6 wk. Ventricu … 80 and 200 mg/kg diet. [3H]Ouabain binding did not change with increasing dietary magnesium. Thus, magnesium deficiency appears to have no effect on the number of sodium-potassium pump sites, but does decrease the activity of the pump. It is suggested that this leads to an increase in intracellular Na+, resulting in a change in the membrane potential, and may contrib …

Nine patients with hypomagnesaemia have been studied. Six had magnesium deficiency secondary to malabsorption or diarrhoea and three had excessive urinary losses of magnesium. Hypocalcaemia was also present in eight. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) was measured using amino-terminal and carboxy-terminal specific immunoradiometric assays and also, in one patient, using a cytochemical bioassay. Amino-terminal PTH (N-PTH) varied directly with the concentration of magnesium; carboxy-terminal PTH (C-PTH) was raised in all patients. When magnesium was injected, both N-PTH and C-PTH rose regardless of the i…

Magnesium and copper are important modulators of NMDA-receptor activity. Recent data indicate that disturbances of glutamatergic transmission (especially via NMDA-receptor) are involved in pathogenesis of mood disorders. Magnesium deficiency, the same as disturbances in turn over of copper, are related to a variety of psychological symptoms especially depression. There are many reports indicating significant changes in blood levels of magnesium or copper during a depressive episode. Moreover magnesium exhibits antidepressant-like and anxiolytic-like effects in animal models of depression, in r…

Data pertinent to the role of magnesium deficits in coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction are reviewed. Results of clinical, laboratory and epidemiologic studies indicate an association between magnesium deficiency and a poor prognostic outcome in patients who have had myocardial infarction. It therefore appears to be a reasonable prophylactic measure to monitor closely magnesium status in patients with coronary heart disease and other patients at risk of acute myocardial infarction, and to supplement with magnesium chloride when clinically necessary. In addition, recent studies pr…

The anaesthetic management of two patients with phaeochromocytoma complicating pregnancy is presented. In one patient, the operative delivery was followed by elective tumour resection at a later stage. Magnesium sulphate was used as an adjunct to all three anaesthetics, with notable success on two occasion. In one of the operative deliveries, it proved impossible to achieve adequate blood levels of magnesium, due to severe pre-existing magnesium deficiency. Hypomagnesaemia is likely to be present in such cases and must be corrected preoperatively. Magnesium sulphate is a useful adjunct to the …

Magnesium depletion in clinical practice is mainly related to loop diuretics and thiazides. Among patients treated with diuretics more than 1/3 exhibit hypomagnesa. Arrhythmias and sudden death attributed to magnesium depletion could be prevented by Mg administration. Magnesium deficiency in experimental animals promotes atherosclerotic lesions whereas this ion is involved in various stages of myocardial damage after experimental coronary artery occlusion. In humans magnesium administration in the first 24 hours of myocardial infarction was related to beneficial effects in first year mortality…

Serum magnesium and digoxin levels were obtained in 13 nontoxic patients with atrial fibrillation due to chronic rheumatic heart disease receiving digoxin for the control of ventricular rate and heart failure. Fairly good correlations were made between serum digoxin levels and ventricular rates. Hypomagnesemia was quite common (7 out of 13) and mean magnesium serum levels were significantly lowered in total as well in 7 hypomagnesemic patients, as compared to in healthy controls. Magnesium sulphate was successfully used in patients with magnesium deficiency to control the ventricular rates.

Accounts of so-called "spontaneous" seizures by individual Mongolian gerbils during open-field tests resemble descriptions of magnesium tetany. A possible association between relative magnesium deficiency and tendency toward "spontaneous" seizures was explored through feeding groups of gerbils different rates of magnesium and subjecting the groups to open-field tests at intervals. Hypomagnesemia was related in degree of severity to length of survival, onset of seizing, and frequency of seizures.

There is an increased interest in the role of magnesium ions in clinical medicine, nutrition and physiology. The characteristics of the bind … transport, intestinal absorption, renal excretion and the effect of hormones on these are reviewed. Magnesium deficiency is not uncommon among the general population: its intake has decreased over the years especially in the western world. The magnesium supplementation or intravenous infusion may be beneficial in various diseased states. Of special interest is the mag …

Known since 1935, the antiarrhythmic effects of magnesium salts are periodically forgotten. They are illustrated here by 4 cases with entirely different clinical and biological features. Of unquestionable therapeutic value was the use of magnesium for the treatment of 2 episodes of severe ventricular extrasystoles with "torsades de pointe". These antiarrhythmic properties are observed whether blood magnesium levels are normal or low and cannot therefore be ascribed to correction of magnesium deficiency. Experimental data are in favour of interferences with transcellular ion flows. Magnesium is…

Magnesium concentrations were measured in the serum of 159 pregnant women, 19 patients with severe, 64 with mild gestational hypertension and 76 with a normal pregnancy. Our data do not support the conclusion that magnesium deficiency is the primary cause of gestational hypertension.

A case of parathyroid carcinoma is described which presented with severe bone disease, complicated after parathyroidectomy by symptomatic hypocalcaemia and magnesium deficiency, both of which responded dramatically to the administration of magnesium. Urinary cyclic AMP assays were used to monitor parathyroid activity.

Magnesium deficiency is common in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), affecting up to 48% of patients, yet remains underrecognized in routine clinical practice. A bidirectional relationship between hypomagnesemia and insulin resistance has been well characterized, and observational data consistently link higher magnesium intake to reduced risks of T2DM, hypertension, stroke, and heart failure. However, supplementation trials have yielded inconsistent results, limited by small sample sizes, short follow-up, heterogeneous formulations with differing bioavailability, and variable glycemic endpoints.…

Children and young people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at risk for deficiency or excess of magnesium and trace elements. Kidney function, dialysis, medication, and dietary and supplemental intake can affect their biochemical status. There is much uncertainty about the requirements of magnesium and trace elements in CKD, which leads to variation in practice. The Pediatric Renal Nutrition Taskforce is an international team of pediatric kidney dietitians and pediatric nephrologists, formed to develop evidence-based clinical practice points to improve the nutritional care of children with

Magnesium (Mg) is the main intracellular divalent cation, and under basal conditions the small intestine absorbs 30-50% of its intake. Normal serum Mg ranges between 1.7-2.3 mg/dl (0.75-0.95 mmol/l), at any age. Even though eighty percent of serum Mg is filtered at the glomerulus, only 3% of it is finally excreted in the urine. Altered magnesium balance can be found in diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure, nephrolithiasis, osteoporosis, aplastic osteopathy, and heart and vascular disease. Three physiopathologic mechanisms can induce Mg deficiency: reduced intestinal absorption, increased u
