Neurophysiological signatures of hand motor response to dual-transcranial direct current stimulation in subacute stroke: a TMS and MEG study.

BACKGROUND: Dual transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to the bilateral primary motor cortices (M1s) has potential benefits in chro … urrent paretic [left for controls] hand exercise. Using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and magnetoencephalography (MEG), we recorded motor evoked potentials (MEPs), the ipsilateral silent period (iSP), short-interval intracortical inhibition, and finger movement-related cortical oscillations before and immediately after tDCS. RESULTS: Stroke survivors had decr …

Disruption of Frontal Lobe Neural Synchrony During Cognitive Control by Alcohol Intoxication.

Decision making relies on dynamic interactions of distributed, primarily frontal brain regions. Extensive evidence from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies indicates that the anterior cingulate (ACC) and the lateral prefrontal cortices (latPFC) are essential nodes subserving cognitive control. However, because of its limited temporal resolution, fMRI cannot accurately reflect the timing and nature of their presumed interplay. The present study combines distributed source modeling of the temporally precise magnetoencephalography (MEG) signal with structural MRI in the form of "…

Ictal Source Locations and Cortico-Thalamic Connectivity in Childhood Absence Epilepsy: Associations with Treatment Response.

Childhood absence epilepsy (CAE), the most common pediatric epilepsy syndrome, is usually treated with valproic acid (VPA) and lamotrigine (LTG) in China. This study aimed to investigate the ictal source locations and functional connectivity (FC) networks between the cortices and thalamus that are related to treatment response. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) data from 25 patients with CAE were recorded at 300 Hz and analyzed in 1-30 Hz frequency bands. Neuromagnetic sources were volumetrically scanned with accumulated source imaging. The FC networks between the cortices and thalamus were evaluat…

Magnetoencephalographic Identification of Epileptic Focus in Children With Generalized Electroencephalographic (EEG) Features but Focal Imaging Abnormalities.

PURPOSE: Children with generalized seizures are often excluded as epilepsy surgery candidates. This prospective study was conducted to evaluate the utility of magnetoencephalography (MEG) to refine the location of the "irritative zone" in children with single lesions on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) but with generalized ictal electroencephalographic (EEG) findings. METHODS: Patients admitted with refractory epilepsy with imaging studies showing focal or hemispheric abnormalities but scalp video EEG showing generalized or multiregional epileptiform abnormalities were included. Patients were…

Source localization of the seizure onset zone from ictal EEG/MEG data.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy relies on the identification of the seizure onset zone (SOZ) and often requires intracranial EEG (iEEG). We have developed a new approach for non-invasive magnetic and electric source imaging of the SOZ (MSI-SOZ and ESI-SOZ) from ictal magnetoencephalography (MEG) and EEG recordings, using wavelet-based Maximum Entropy on the Mean (wMEM) method. We compared the performance of MSI-SOZ and ESI-SOZ with interictal spike source localization (MSI-spikes and ESI-spikes) and clinical localization of the SOZ (i.e., based on iEEG or lesion top…

Facilitation of information processing in the primary somatosensory area in the ball rotation task.

Somatosensory input to the brain is known to be modulated during voluntary movement. It has been demonstrated that the response in the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) is generally gated during simple movement of the corresponding body part. This study investigated sensorimotor integration in the SI during manual movement using a motor task combining movement complexity and object manipulation. While the amplitude of M20 and M30 generated in the SI showed a significant reduction during manual movement, the subsequent component (M38) was significantly higher in the motor task than in the stati

Detecting and representing predictable structure during auditory scene analysis.

We use psychophysics and MEG to test how sensitivity to input statistics facilitates auditory-scene-analysis (ASA). Human subjects listened to 'scenes' comprised of concurrent tone-pip streams (sources). On occasional trials a new source appeared partway. Listeners were more accurate and quicker to detect source appearance in scenes comprised of temporally-regular (REG), rather than random (RAND), sources. MEG in passive listeners and those actively detecting appearance events revealed increased sustained activity in auditory and parietal cortex in REG relative to RAND scenes, emerging ~400 ms

The Contribution of the Corpus Callosum to Language Lateralization.

UNLABELLED: The development of hemispheric lateralization for language is poorly understood. In one hypothesis, early asymmetric gene expression assigns language to the left hemisphere. In an alternate view, language is represented a priori in both hemispheres and lateralization emerges via cross-hemispheric communication through the corpus callosum. To address this second hypothesis, we capitalized on the high temporal and spatial resolution of magnetoencephalographic imaging to measure cortical activity during language processing, speech preparation, and speech execution in 25 participants w

Reduced motor cortex deactivation in individuals who suffer from writer's cramp.

This study investigated the neuromagnetic activities of self-paced finger lifting task and electrical median nerve stimulation in ten writer's cramp patients and fourteen control subjects. The event-related de/synchronizations (ERD/ERS) of beta-band activity levels were evaluated and the somatosensory cortical activity levels were analyzed using equivalent-current dipole modeling. No significant difference between the patients and control subjects was found in the electrical stimulation-induced beta ERS and electrical evoked somatosensory cortical responses. Movement-related beta ERD did not d

Resting state α-band functional connectivity and recovery after stroke.

After cerebral ischemia, disruption and subsequent reorganization of functional connections occur both locally and remote to the lesion. However, the unpredictable timing and extent of sensorimotor recovery reflects a gap in understanding of these underlying neural mechanisms. We aimed to identify the plasticity of alpha-band functional neural connections within the perilesional area and the predictive value of functional connectivity with respect to motor recovery of the upper extremity after stroke. Our results show improvements in upper extremity motor recovery in relation to distributed ch

Localization of slow wave activity in patients with tumor-associated epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Brain tumors are frequently accompanied by abnormal low frequency magnetic activity (ALFMA). The prevalence and clinical meaning of ALFMA are not well known, although a relation with epileptic brain tissue has been suggested. We studied the prevalence, characteristics and clinical correlates of ALFMA in 20 patients with brain tumors. METHODS: In 20 patients with clinical seizures due to a supratentorial tumor, MEG was performed, followed by MR imaging. MEG signals were band pass-filtered (1-4 Hz); the sources of this activity were localized and projected onto the MRI of the patient

Contributions of magnetic source imaging to the understanding of dyslexia.

The problem in dyslexia is difficulty learning how the printed word maps onto spoken language. Magnetic Source Imaging protocols were used in three studies. The first study with dyslexic children showed greater activity in the right temporoparietal region. The second study showed the aberrant neural circuit was present in initial stages of reading acquisition. The third study demonstrated that the aberrant profile could be normalized following intensive instruction. These findings suggest that dyslexia represents a functional deficit in the neural circuit that mediates the conversion of print

Frontal and temporo-parietal changes in delta and alpha power accompany stress-induced vasoconstriction and blood pressure response.

Exaggerated blood pressure and vasoconstriction responses during acute mental stress are prospectively associated with an increased risk of hypertension, arrhythmia, and vascular dysfunction. This study assessed electrophysiological brain power and cardiovascular response to acute psychological stress during concurrent recordings of magnetoencephalography, muscle sympathetic nerve activity, and blood pressure in 29 healthy participants. Brain power was filtered through delta (1-4 Hz), theta (4-8 Hz), alpha (8-13 Hz), beta (13-30 Hz), low gamma (30-80 Hz), and high gamma (80-120 Hz) bands. Stre…
