OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate the use of computer-assisted design and rapid prototype modeling to improve the speed and accuracy of mandibular reconstruction.
STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study.
METHODS: Between 2005 and 2011, 38 subjects underwent fibula free flap mandibular reconstruction using computer-assisted design and rapid prototype modeling. Computed tomography images showed recurrent lower gingival squamous cell carcinoma spreading from the mandibular foramen to the middle cranial fossa. This extensive tumor spread followed exactly the same anatomic pathway as the inferior alveolar nerve. Histopathologic examination revealed squamous cell carcinoma. Tumor spread was thought to be caused by perineural invasion. This case demonstrates computed tomography features of perineural tumor spread along the inferior alveolar nerve.

A prospective study of 85 patients with oral cancer, treated with high-dose radiation therapy, was performed to assess the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and scintigraphy for diagnosis of pathologic changes in the mandible. We report the CT and MR findings in a patient with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor in the parapharyngeal space who had neither a family history nor stigmata of neurofibromatosis. A high-resolution CT scan of the temporal bone revealed bony erosion and widening of both the foramen ovale and the bony portion of the eustachian tube. A temporal bone MR image showed an intensely enhancing solid mass in the parapharyngeal space, which extended into the middle ear cavity via the eustachian tube.

Deformities of the adjacent facial bones are common with large vascular tumors. Most hemangiomas will resolve spontaneously, but the incidence of resolution appears to be quite low when the adjacent bones are affected. In these, we have used high dosage corticosteroid therapy in the early cases, particularly those involving the orbit. Surgical excision has been used in most of the other cases, with reasonable improvement.

This systematic review aimed to evaluate the dental prosthetic rehabilitation (DPR) in patients after jaw reconstruction with fibula free flap. Four databases were searched from January 2000 to January 2023. Of the 2507 studies identified, 36 observational studies were included. Multiple myeloma (MM) is a neoplasia characterized by the proliferation of plasmacytoid cells, which produce abnormal immunoglobulins. Cemento-osseous dysplasia encompasses several different clinical and radiographic presentations, including periapical, focal and florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD). FCOD is usually asymptomatic and discovered only fortuitously. No treatment is required unless the lesion is secondarily infected. Oral hygiene advice should be emphasized for patients with FCOD to prevent caries and periodontal diseases and to maintain natural teeth. Osseointegration of implants would likely not be successful in these patients because the bone is abnormal and not well-vascularized.

Myeloid sarcoma, also commonly termed granulocytic sarcoma or chloroma, is a rare condition involving infiltration of immature myeloid cells in an extramedullary site. Primary bone tumors represent about 7% of paediatric malignancies. Osteosarcoma and Ewing's tumor are the most frequent ones, however they are rare in facial bones.
