Cerebral sinovenous thrombosis (CSVT) is a pediatric stroke syndrome that occurs uncommonly in association with a number of common pediatric problems, most notably dehydration and infection-otitis media in older children, in particular. Cerebral sinovenous thrombosis involves considerable risk of morbidity and mortality. In the pediatric population, neonates are most commonly affected, but no age group is spared. The clinical manifestations of CSVT vary across age groups and include headache, nausea/vomiting, diplopia, seizures, altered mental status, cranial nerve palsies, and papilledema. Ne

Turner syndrome (TS) is the human being's most frequent sex chromosome abnormality. Progressive sensorineural hearing loss is documented in more than 50% of the women affected by this syndrome. Although Mondini defect is the cochlear congenital malformation most frequently identified in other polymalformative syndromes, it has rarely been reported in TS. We describe the case of a 32-year-old woman with TS who presented progressive sensorineural hearing loss. The computed tomography of the ears showed bilateral Mondini deformity.

Tympanic membrane retraction is a significant sequela of OME and has been linked clinically to atelectasis, ossicular erosion, and cholesteatoma. We investigated important factors for prediction of tympanic membrane retraction in a prospective study of 112 children. After 4 to 6 years of follow-up, 12% of ears had pars tensa retraction without atrophy, and 28% had various degrees of retraction with atrophy. Mild pars flaccida retraction was present in 23%, and severe pars flaccida retraction was present in 12%. Retraction severity was related to hearing level and multifrequency tympanometry. T

In a 1-year prospective study, 60 patients with chronic serous otitis media underwent bilateral tympanocentesis with tube insertion. The right ear was treated with dexapolyspectran (a solution consisting of polymyxin B sulfate, neomycin sulfate, sulfonamide, and hydrocortisone) intraoperatively and for 72 hours afterward, and the left ear served as the control. All patients were followed up at weekly intervals for the first month. Five (8.3%) out of 60 experimental ears had purulent otorrhea within the first 14 days after surgery, compared with eight (13.3%) out of 60 control ears. Statistical

INTRODUCTION: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is an autosomal recessive genetic disease, which primarily manifests with oto-sino-pulmonary symptoms. Otitis media with effusion (OME) is common from early childhood. The existing literature on OME management in PCD is conflicting. The goals of the present study were firstly to evaluate the long-term hearing in PCD patients and secondly to determine the influence of ventilation tube (VT) insertion on hearing and postoperative otorrhoea.
METHODS: A longitudinal retrospective study extracting the hearing level (pure tone average (0.5, 1, 2, 4 kHz,

OBJECTIVE: Exploratory tympanotomy (ET) can be performed selectively on patients who have air-bone gaps (ABGs) without any apparent external or middle ear abnormalities for diagnosis and treatment of their conductive hearing loss. However, surgeons cannot always find middle ear problems. It has recently been reported that pathologic third windows in inner ears can cause ABGs. Therefore, the authors conducted this study to evaluate the inner ear anatomical problems of patients who had undergone ET.

BACKGROUND: Predicting the prognosis of early-onset otitis media with effusion (OME) in children is difficult.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prognostic factors of OME in children undergoing tympanostomy at 1 year of age.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We examined 66 children (123 ears) followed up to 6 years of age. OME prognosis was determined by a history of re-tympanostomy at the last examination. We retrospectively analysed the prognostic factors based on the duration of first ventilation tube (VT) placed, history of otorrhea, asthma, adenoidectomy, and mastoid air cell system (MACS) size at 1 y

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Advanced practice provider (APP) employment is becoming common in pediatric otolaryngology practices, though few studies have evaluated the consequences that APP-led clinics have on access to care. The objectives of this study were: 1) to investigate whether access to bilateral myringotomy with tympanostomy tube placement (BMT) for recurrent acute otitis media (RAOM) differed between patients seen in otolaryngologist and APP-led clinics 2) to compare clinical characteristics of patients seen by provider type.

BACKGROUND: The insertion of grommets (also known as ventilation or tympanostomy tubes) is one of the most common surgical procedures performed on children. Postoperative otorrhoea (discharge) is the most common complication with a reported incidence ranging from 10% to 50%. In the UK, many ENT surgeons treat with topical antibiotics/steroid combinations, but general practitioners, mainly through fears of ototoxicity, are unlikely to prescribe these and choose systemic broad-spectrum antibiotics.
OBJECTIVES: 1. To identify the most effective non-surgical management of discharge from ears with

OBJECTIVE: Chronic tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) in a clinical setting may attract surgical intervention. With the advent of modern biomaterials, new options are available for myringoplasty but safety and efficacy need evaluation in a chronic TMP animal model. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of ventilation tube (VT) insertion in conjunction with topical application of mitomycin C/dexamethasone (M/D) for the creation of chronic TMP in rats.
METHODS: Thirty male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent myringotomy of the right tympanic membrane (TM) and were divided into three exp

OBJECTIVE: Primary ciliary dyskinesia is an autosomal recessively inherited group of disorders of ciliary ultrastructure. Otolaryngologists are frequently involved in the management of some of the most common symptoms of primary ciliary dyskinesia including chronic rhinitis, sinusitis and otitis media with effusion. A dilemma for otorhinolaryngologists is whether ventilation tubes are of benefit in children with primary ciliary dyskinesia and otitis media with effusion and what effective alternatives exist. This paper aims to address this issue via a literature review and case presentation.

OBJECTIVE: Tympanosclerosis is a common sequela of ventilation tube treatment of otitis media with effusion causing hearing disability. It is associated with an increased production of free radicals (also known as reactive oxygen species) after myringotomy. Vitamin E is a scavenger of different free radicals by working as an antioxidant. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of vitamin E-coated tympanostomy tube insertion at quantity of free radicals in rat tympanic membrane.

Otitis media with effusion is a leading cause of conductive hearing loss in children. Myringotomy and insertion of tympanostomy tubes is the accepted form of treatment. Recently, several studies utilizing laser myringotomy have been published, but few of them present late results. The objective of this study was to compare late results of the treatment with laser and classical myringotomy. A clinical effectiveness trial was conducted in three groups of children: (1) 37 children treated with laser myringotomy (ML), (2) 29 children treated with laser myringotomy and the insertion of tympanostomy

Otorrhea occurs in 21 to 50% of all children with tympanostomy tubes in the United States. More than 1 million children annually undergo tubomyringotomy, constituting placement of more than 2 million tympanostomy tubes each year. The organisms typically responsible for otorrhea are the same as those that cause otitis media in very young children, including Streptococcus pneumonia, Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis. Drainage from tympanostomy tubes in older children involves organisms that colonize the external auditory canal, the most common being Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Stap

The efficacy and tolerability of topical treatment (both drops and spray) in the treatment of otorrhoea in those ears with ventilation tubes in-situ was studied. Sixty patients were randomised into two treatment groups. One group used an antibacterial/anti-inflammatory ear drop preparation (Otosporin) and the other group a similar preparation administered as an ear spray (Otomize). A 'blind' clinical assessment was made one and three weeks after commencing treatment. Both treatments (drops and spray) significantly improved patients' symptoms and signs after one week (p < 0.001). The spray was

BACKGROUND: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a common disease in ear, nose, and throat clinics characterized by aural fullness and hearing loss and mainly caused by eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD). Tympanostomy tube insertion (TTI) is a conventional surgical treatment option that can alleviate symptoms but does not provide a definitive cure, and it is prone to recurrence. Balloon dilation eustachian tuboplasty (BDET) has become a novel procedure for the treatment of ETD, demonstrating significant potential in addressing the aforementioned limitations. However, it is not widely available i
