The present study investigated the impact of antiparasitic treatment for Chorioptes spp. infection on the behaviour and stress of lactating cows. Although chorioptic mange is common, its effects on cow welfare through behavioural and physiological indicators remain unclear. The effects of topical eprinomectin for chorioptic mange on behaviour and salivary cortisol concentrations, indicators of cow welfare, were examined. In Study 1, total lying time after treatment, a key indicator of improved comfort in cows, showed a significant increase of 35 min. In Study 2, itching behaviour (P < 0.05) an

BACKGROUND: Bats are important reservoir hosts for a variety of pathogens, some of which are transmitted by ectoparasite vectors including mites, fleas, lice, ticks, and bat flies (families Nycteribiidae and Streblidae). All these ectoparasite taxa are known to parasitize two endemic fruit bats of Madagascar, Eidolon dupreanum and Rousettus madagascariensis. We aimed to describe the diversity of ectoparasite infestation for both bat species through morphological observation and DNA barcoding and elucidate ecological and climatic correlates of seasonal nycteribiid parasitism of these hosts.

Demodex folliculorum and brevis are commensal mites that live in low densities in human pilosebaceous follicles as part of the normal adult microbiota, but that give rise to demodicosis and, possibly, rosacea, when they proliferate excessively. This proliferation is favored by various factors, including age, marked immunosuppression, sebaceous gland hyperplasia, and hypervascularization-related factors. To study possible factors influencing mite proliferation, we explored the effects of different variables on Demodex densities (Dd) in a retrospective study of two groups of subjects selected on

OBJECTIVE: Demodex acari is an obligate ectoparasite, and it is usually located in the human hair follicles, eyelash roots, and sebaceous glands. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Demodex infestation in chronic blepharitis cases that are resistant to therapy.
METHODS: Patients who were admitted at the Istanbul Medipol University School of Medicine Hospital with a diagnosis of chronic blepharitis were included. All cases received conventional therapy at least three times. Three or four eyelash samples from patients with blepharitis were collected and examined under light

A 68-year-old Caucasian woman presented with a 1-month history of a facial and neck eruption (Figure 1A). Her face was covered with 3-mm monomorphic, pink, shiny, papules and rare pustules on an erythematous background. The eruption extended down the neck, her conjunctivae were injected, and her lid margins were inflamed. She had no history of rosacea.

BACKGROUND: The mite Psoroptes cuniculi is a common worldwide ectoparasite and the most frequently found in rabbit farms. It causes significant economic losses on commercial rabbit breeding associated with poor leather quality, reduced conception rates, weight loss, poor growth and death. Several strategies have been proposed for the treatment of mange caused by this mite, ranging from the use of acaricides, entomopathogenic fungi, essential oils and vaccines. However, therapy and control of both human scabies and animal mange are still based mainly on the use of drugs and chemicals such as iv

BACKGROUND: Animal acariasis is one of the important veterinary skin diseases. Chemical drugs have been widely used to treat and control this kind of disease. But many chemicals control could increase resistance in target species, toxicity and environmental hazards. We found that the 9-oxo-10, 11-dehydroageraphorone (euptox A) extracted from E. adenophorum has strong toxicity against P. cuniculi in vitro, but the in vivo acaricidal actions of euptox A have yet to be investigated.
RESULTS: A 14-day experiment was performed using rabbits that were naturally infested with P. cuniculi on a farm.

The acaricidal activity of the 9-oxo-10,11-dehydroageraphorone (euptox A), a cadenine sesquiterpene from Eupatorium adenophorum (E. adenophorum) against Sarcoptes scabiei and Psoroptes cuniculi was tested in vitro. A complementary log-log (CLL) model was used to analyze the data of the toxicity tests in vitro. The results showed euptox A had strong toxicity against mites, killing all S. scabiei at 3 and 4 mg/ml (m/v) concentration, while 4 mg/ml euptox A was also found to kill all P. cuniculi within a 4 h period. Similarly, 2, 3 and 4 mg/ml concentration of euptox A had strong toxicity against

Demodex mites are ectoparasites often found in follicles of facial skin. Their role in human diseases is under investigation, and a growing number of studies indicated that they contribute to chronic inflammatory conditions of the skin, such as rosacea, blepharitis, otitis externa, alopecia and folliculitis. In our study we tested 96 healthy adults for the presence of Demodex mites. Risk factors influencing presence of mites and skin types of the tested individuals were evaluated. We found Demodex folliculorum or Demodex brevis in 17.7% of the samples, more frequently in males (21.9%) and in o

Insects such as stable flies, house flies, horn flies, face flies, mosquitoes, horse flies, deer flies, cattle grubs, and lice as well as ticks and mites are the major external parasites of dairy animals in the United States. These pests cause obvious discomfort to livestock and economic effects of heavy populations usually are discerned easily. However, research efforts to date have failed to establish reproducible losses caused by specific ectoparasites. Research efforts involving a multidisciplinary systems approach are necessary to provide the data needed to develop total dairy management

In contrast to the findings in newly caught babboons in Africa, the leading cause of death in captivity in America was a pneumonia and enteritis complex. Bacterial species such as Proteus morgani, Proteus mirabilis, Clostridium sp., Pseudomonas paracolon, pathogenic Escherichia coli and cocci have been isolated in association with a pneumoenteric syndrome of 35 newborn baboons, including neonates. The majority of these animals died with pulmonary factors such as anoxia and pneumonia.

AIM: Excessive proliferation ofDemodex folliculorumhas been implicated in blepharitis and other inflammatory ocular conditions. Given the growing interest in safer and more effective alternatives to current treatments, this study aimed to evaluate and compare the in vitro acaricidal efficacy of lemongrass oil, tea tree oil (TTO), ivermectin 1%, lotilaner ophthalmic solution 0.25% (Xdemvy), lime sulfur, and olive oil (used as a negative control) againstDemodex folliculorum.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult Demodex folliculorum mites were isolated from eyelash samples of blepharitis patients. Lashe

PURPOSE: To evaluate terpinen-4-ol lid scrubs (Cliradex) with Microblepharoexfoliation (MBE) (BlephEx) in the treatment of Demodex blepharitis.
METHODS: An Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved the randomized prospective double-masked trial of 50 patients with Demodex positive blepharitis. All subjects were given an in-office MBE treatment and randomized to masked lid scrubs (terpinen-4-ol or sham) twice daily for 1 month. All subjects then returned for an additional MBE treatment and received open-label terpinen-4-ol scrubs twice daily for 1 month.
OUTCOMES: Demodex levels, Ocular Surfa

Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis are ectoparasites that inhabit the skin of humans. They have been related to alterations in the ocular surface, such as, dysfunction of Meibomian glands, blepharitis, chalazion, etc. Ocular demodicosis is characterised by the pathognomonic presence of cylindrical dandruff at the base of the eyelashes, and various symptoms including, among others, itching, lacrimation, and hyperaemia. A bibliographic review was carried out on the role of Demodex spp. in ocular disease, including publications made by the scientific society between 2005 and 2018. A signific
