Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological disorder characterized by the loss of midbrain dopaminergic (DA) neurons. Neural stem cells (NSCs) are multipotent stem cells that are capable of differentiating into different neuronal and glial elements. The production of DA neurons from NSCs could potentially alleviate behavioral deficits in Parkinsonian patients; timely intervention with NSCs might provide a therapeutic strategy for PD. We have isolated and generated highly enriched cultures of neural stem/progenitor cells from the human olfactory bulb (OB). If NSCs can be obtained from OB, it wou

BACKGROUND: In recent years, camptocormia and dropped head syndrome (DHS) have gained attention as particular forms of movement disorders. Camptocormia presents with involuntary forward flexion of the thoracolumbar spine that typically increases during walking or standing and may severely impede walking ability. DHS is characterized by weakness of the neck extensors and a consecutive inability to extend the neck; in severe cases the head is fixed in a "chin to chest position." Many diseases may underlie these conditions, and there have been some reports about radiation-induced camptocormia and…

A 62-year-old man presented with left middle cerebral artery stroke. 1 h postadministration of tissue plasminogen activator, he received a total of 4 mg of haloperidol for combativeness. He developed partial complex status epilepticus, requiring benzodiazepines, phenytoin, propofol and intubation. 5 h later, he developed recurrent stereotyped tonic movements involving arching of the back, extension of the arms and contraction of opposing muscle groups. Repeat CT scan of the head showed evolving insular infarct. Differential diagnoses for these movements included tonic/clonic seizures, extensor

Transcranial B-mode sonography (TCS) of brain parenchyma is being increasingly used as a diagnostic tool in movement disorders. Compared to other neuroimaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography, TCS can be performed today with portable machines and has the advantages of noninvasiveness and high resistance to movement artifacts. In distinct brain disorders TCS detects abnormalities that cannot be visualized or can only be visualized with significant effort with other imaging methods. In the field of movement disorders, TCS has been established mainly as …

Over the past 10 years, significant strides have been made in therapeutics for sleep disorders. In this second installment of a two-part review series, we discuss the current evidence surrounding the mechanisms of actions, indications, efficacy, and adverse side effects associated with the current over-the-counter and pharmacotherapeutics for hypersomnia, parasomnias, and movement disorders of sleep.

The purpose of this study is to develop three-dimensional (3D) finite element models of temporomandibular joints (TMJs) and to investigate stress distributions. To determine the causes of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), the magnitude and location of the maximum stresses under physiological loading must be considered. Stress analysis TMD models were reconstructed from computed tomography (CT) data. Several studies have investigated finite element TMJ models, but few have used a bilateral mandible model that includes jaw closing and maximum opening. In this study, the authors defined an asym

AIM: Chromosome microarray (CMA) can determine copy number variants such as microdeletions or microduplications. Microdeletions of movement disorder genes including epsilon-sarcoglycan (SGCE) and thyroid transcription factor-1 (TITF1) have been described in patients with myoclonus dystonia and benign hereditary chorea respectively. We examined whether CMA is a valuable tool in the investigation of children with suspected genetic movement disorders.
METHOD: A genetic movement disorder was suspected if there was a positive first-degree family history, or two or more of the following factors: no…

This review gives an overview of those in vivo imaging studies on synaptic neurotransmission, which so far have been performed on patients with movement disorders and/or dementia. Thereby, the focus is on disease-related deficiencies within the functional entity of the dopaminergic, serotonergic, cholinergic, glutamatergic, GABAergic or opioid synapse. In vivo investigations have yielded highly consistent results on the dysfunction of synaptic constituents in the majority of diseases covered by this overview. Findings show presynaptic dysfunctions in idiopathic as well as early-onset Parkinson…

OBJECT: The object of this study was to assess the long-term safety of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in a large population of patients with a variety of movement disorders.
METHODS: All patients treated with DBS at the authors' center between 1995 and 2005 were assessed for intraoperative, perioperative, and long-term adverse events (AEs). A total of 319 patients underwent DBS device implantation. Of these 319, 182 suffered from medically refractory Parkinson disease; the other patients had essential tremor (112 patients), dystonia (19 patients), and other hyperkinetic movement disorders (six …

Eye movement disorders are rarely reported in vitamin B12 deficiency. We describe two cases with eye movement disorder and vitamin B12 deficiency; one with bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia and the other with downbeat nystagmus. Both of the patients received replacement therapy but their eye movement disorders did not respond to treatment. We also review the nine previously reported cases.

Laryngeal physiology depends on dynamic neuromuscular forces acting on a basic framework of cartilage and specialized soft tissues, that is, the vocal folds. A working understanding of this organ in health and disease requires knowledge of specific neurological processes that may affect voice, swallowing, and airway regulation. Neuromuscular impairment continues to be a dominant topic in the study of laryngeal disorders. This subcommittee presentation reviews important aspects of the neurolaryngeal history and physical examination. After this foundation, 4 common movement disorders affecting t…

Clinico-electromyographical analysis has been conducted in patients with a late residual stage of cerebral palsy (CP). Multilevel CNS lesion with upper segmental and segmental involvement was detected in 19.1% of the patients with CP combined with progressive deformations of lower extremities joints in need of orthopedic-surgical treatment. The presence of segmental motoneuron disturbances in CP patients considerably worsens the clinical pattern of the disease that demands changes in policy of rehabilitation and surgical treatment. Electromyography with assessment of motor units activity poten

We investigated the impact of visual states on basal ganglia oscillatory biomarkers, comparing local field potentials (LFPs) dynamics between Parkinson's disease (PD) and dystonia and developing a decoding model for state identification. Simultaneous LFPs recordings from the subthalamic nucleus (STN) or globus pallidus internus (GPi), and cortex were obtained from 18 PD and 18 dystonia patients. In the eyes-closed state, theta and alpha power increased in the basal ganglia, with stronger coherence to the central cortex, more pronounced in the STN than in the GPi. Machine learning models identi
