A review of cases of human cysticercosis in Canada.

OBJECTIVE: Review of human cysticercosis in Canada, to estimate the magnitude of the disease and to describe the pattern of disease expression in this country. METHODS: MEDLINE and manual search of case reports and case series of patients with cysticercosis diagnosed in Canada. Abstracted data included year of diagnosis, citizenship status, clinical manifestations, and form of cysticercosis. FINDINGS: A total of 21 articles reporting 60 patients were found. Forty (67%) of these patients were diagnosed in the past two decades. Most cases came from Ontario (n=43) and Quebec (n=14). Immigrants

Isolated intra-oral granular cell tumor: report of two cases and review of the literature.

Granular cell tumor (GCT) is a relatively uncommon lesion occurring in almost any part of the body, including the orofacial region. The tongue and the buccal mucosa are common intra oral sites. Although aggressive and malignant variants of this neoplasm have been described, most GCTs are benign. The histogenesis of the lesion still remains unknown. However, histochemical and ultra-structural studies propose the origin of the lesion from Schwann cells, striated muscle, mesenchymal cells, histiocytes and epithelial cells. The tumor generally occurs in middle-aged or older adults. The lesion is t

Histology, immunohistochemistry and ultrastructure of the equine tubal tonsil.

The tubal tonsil of the horse surrounds the pharyngeal opening of the eustachian tube and is lined by pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelium interspersed with areas of follicle-associated epithelium (FAE) heavily infiltrated by lymphocytes but devoid of goblet and ciliated cells. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed microvillous cells and cells with features characteristic of M cells such as reduced microvilli or depressed bare surface, more numerous mitochondria, small vesicles and lysosomes, as well as vimentin filaments and epitopes specific for GS 1-B4 as previousl

[Esophageal manometric studies in patients with an apoplectic stroke with/without oropharyngeal dysphagia].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: As many as 45% of all strokes can lead to permanent dysphagia, usually considered to be due to abnormal oropharyngeal coordination of contraction. It was the aim of the study to compare oesophageal motility in stroke patients with and without dysphagia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 36 patients (13 men, 23 women, mean age 74.1 +/- 11.3 years) who had sustained a stroke (19 [mean age 70.6 +/- 10.5 years] with and 17 [mean age 77.6 +/- 10.5 years] without dysphagia). All these patients underwent oesophageal manometry within 2 days after hospital ad

Posterior sacral rhizotomy and intradural anterior sacral root stimulation for treatment of the spastic bladder in spinal cord injured patients.

PURPOSE: The efficacy of intradural sacral posterior rhizotomy combined with intradural sacral anterior root stimulation in the treatment of the neurogenic hyperreflexic bladder was evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed 10 spinal cord injured patients who underwent surgery between September 1990 and February 1994. Bladder function was compared preoperatively and postoperatively. Intraoperative data on electrostimulation of the detrusor and striated muscles were analyzed. RESULTS: Stimulation of the anterior S3 and S4 roots was mostly used to empty the bladder (7 of 10 cases). Preoper

[Vesico-urethral and entero-urethral anastomosis: anatomo-surgical considerations and technical note].

Following radical prostatectomy or radical cystectomy with orthotopic ileal bladder (in male patients), the cervico-urethral or entero-urethral anastomosis are at high risk for urinary stress incontinence, due to the shortening of the urethral functional length as well as "unavoidable downward fall" of the perineum after sectioning of the anterior portion of the sacro-pubic ligaments. That descensus of the perineum, if uncorrected, might cause a functional extraabdominal positioning of the residual functional urethra; this feature is close similar to one of the most important pathogenetic fact

Expression of the cell-cell adhesion glycoprotein cell-CAM 120/80 in normal human tissues and tumors.

Polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies raised to the 80 kd glycoprotein component of the cell to cell adhesion molecule cell-CAM 120/80 were used to map its distribution immunohistochemically in normal human tissues and in benign and malignant tumors. Cell-CAM 120/80 was found in all normal epithelial tissues, but was not expressed on neural, lymphoid, smooth, striated and cardiac muscle, connective tissue, or the germ cells in either sex. The expression of this adhesion molecule was polarized in ductal and glandular epithelia and evenly circumferential in squamous and transitional epithelia. So

Primary rhabdomyosarcoma combined with chronic paragonimiasis in the cerebrum: a necropsy case and review of the literature.

A necropsy case of a primary rhabdomyosarcoma with chronic paragonimiasis in the cerebrum of a 68-year-old man is reported. The clinical data showed a right hemiplegia and dysarthria which became lethal in 6 months even though operation and radiation therapy were performed. Computed tomography revealed a large low-density area associated with the peripheral enhancement in the left basal ganglia, and multiple conglomerated calcified masses in the left temporal and occipital lobes. Biopsied and necropsied materials of the tumor in the basal ganglia was reddish brown in color and histologically w

Factors Associated With Urinary Incontinence in Nulliparous Female Elite Athletes: An Exploratory, Cross-Sectional Study Using Dynamic Pelvic Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Questionnaire Data.

PURPOSE: Urinary incontinence (UI) is common in nulliparous female elite athletes, but underlying pathophysiology is inadequately understood. We examined urinary symptoms and associated pelvic floor anatomy and function in this population, hypothesizing that athletes with UI would exhibit pelvic floor findings seen in older incontinent women (eg, pelvic floor descent and urethral hypermobility) and findings attributable to elite sporting such as muscle hypertrophy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study of National Collegiate Athletic Association Division 1 nulliparous fe

Primary pyomyositis in children.

BACKGROUND: Pyomyositis (PM) is defined as a primary pyogenic infection of the striated skeletal muscle; although it has many dystrophic musculoskeletal complications, it is always misdiagnosed by many orthopedic surgeons. HYPOTHESIS: PM is rare in temperate climates and usually considered to be a tropical disease, until recent times, after globalization, it is possible to occur in the subtropical climate as in our country. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the present series, the results of 15 children patients with primary pyomyositis have been reviewed. In five out of them, conservative treatment

Effects of ovariectomy and estrogen replacement on the urethral continence reflex during sneezing in rats.

PURPOSE: Stress urinary incontinence is often seen in postmenopausal women but limited information is available on hormone dependent changes of urethral function. Thus, we examined how ovariectomy and estrogen replacement affect urethral continence mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In female nulliparous Sprague-Dawley® rats under urethane anesthesia after ovariectomy with or without estrogen replacement we measured urethral response amplitude during sneezing, urethral baseline pressure and sneeze induced leak point pressure. Whole urethras were tested for ex vivo urethral properties. RESULT

TGF-alpha, EGF, and their cognate EGF receptor are co-expressed with desmin during embryonic, fetal, and neonatal myogenesis in mouse tongue development.

The developing mouse tongue provides a model for discrete patterns of morphogenesis during short periods of embryonic development. Occipital somite-derived myogenic cells interact with cranial neural crest-derived ecto-mesenchymal cells to form the musculature of the tongue. The biochemical signals that control close range autocrine and/or paracrine signaling processes required to establish the fast-twitch complex tongue musculature are not known. The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that desmin, epidermal growth factor (EGF), and transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF alpha) a

Intercellular communication from myotubes to fibroblasts is differentially impacted by mineralocorticoid receptor signaling and muscular dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: Replacement of striated muscle with fibrosis leads to the symptoms and fatality in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Transient local production of the mineralocorticoid aldosterone in the skeletal muscle microenvironment enhances wound healing. However, persistent aldosterone signaling through the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) in multiple cell types within skeletal muscles exacerbates damage and fibrosis in DMD. Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists demonstrate therapeutic benefits by preventing aldosterone binding to MR and downstream transcriptional activation. Therefore, def

Vascular Smooth Muscle Myosin 2 Filaments Dynamically Assemble and Stabilize During Induced Contractility.

BACKGROUND: Vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) dynamically tune blood vessel diameter to regulate blood pressure, provide vessel wall structural integrity, and absorb shock on a beat-to-beat timescale. SMII (smooth muscle myosin 2) is the dominant motor protein driving SMC contraction. To function, SMII monomers dynamically assemble into filaments, which associate with the actin cytoskeleton to drive contractility. Precisely how SMII filaments assemble and exchange in living SMCs, however, both at steady state and during induced contractility, remains poorly defined. METHODS: We used a singl

Pompe disease gene therapy: neural manifestations require consideration of CNS directed therapy.

Pompe disease is a neuromuscular disease caused by a deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme acid alpha-glucosidase leading to lysosomal and cytoplasmic glycogen accumulation in neurons and striated muscle. In the decade since availability of first-generation enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) a better understanding of the clinical spectrum of disease has emerged. The most severe form of early onset disease is typically identified with symptoms in the first year of life, known as infantile-onset Pompe disease (IOPD). Infants are described at floppy babies with cardiac hypertrophy in the first few mon

The SMYD1 p.Asn101Ser is a partial loss-of-function variant that impairs mitochondrial function and leads to early-onset cardiomyopathy.

Infantile cardiomyopathies are rare, life-threatening disorders for which genetic diagnosis has been accelerated by next-generation sequencing approaches, including gene panel, exome, and genome sequencing. However, determining the functional consequences of identified variants remains a major challenge. Variants in SMYD1, a striated muscle-specific lysine methyltransferase critical for cardiac development and mitochondrial function, have only recently been linked to human cardiomyopathy. Here, we functionally characterize a homozygous SMYD1 variant (c.302A>G; p.Asn101Ser) identified in a pati

Pregnancy in myasthenia gravis: a retrospective analysis of maternal and neonatal outcome from a large tertiary care centre in Germany.

PURPOSE: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a rare, potentially life-threatening autoimmune disease with fluctuating muscle weakness frequently affecting women of childbearing age. MG can affect maternal as well as neonatal outcome with risk of worsening of myasthenic symptoms in the mothers and risk of transient neonatal myasthenia gravis (TNMG) and arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) or foetal acetylcholine receptor antibody-associated disorders (FARAD) in the neonates. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of maternal and neonatal outcome in a cohort of pregnant MG patients treated at a tertiary car

Molecular and tissue mechanisms of catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia.

Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) is a stress-induced cardiac channelopathy that has a high mortality in untreated patients. Our understanding has grown tremendously since CPVT was first described as a clinical syndrome in 1995. It is now established that the deadly arrhythmias are caused by unregulated 'pathological' calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), the major calcium storage organelle in striated muscle. Important questions remain regarding the molecular mechanisms that are responsible for the pathological calcium release, regarding the tissue o

Mature congenital intraneural teratoma in cerebellum of pig.

The biological behavior of teratomas depends on several interdependent clinical and epidemiological variables such as age at diagnosis, sex, tumor microenvironment, and tumor morphology, among others. All these variables are correlated to different cytogenetic and molecular aberrations (Harms et al., 2006). There are null reports of teratomas in pigs. The aim of this study was to characterize the tissues present in a mature congenital intraneural teratoma in the cerebellum area of a Landrace female pig of 6-7 weeks old. In this study, tissue control samples were used to validate each staining
