Recovery Kinetics Following Small-Sided Games in Competitive Soccer Players: Does Player Density Size Matter?

PURPOSE: To examine the recovery kinetics of exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD), neuromuscular fatigue, and performance following small-sided games (SSGs) of different densities in soccer. METHODS: Ten male players randomly completed 3 trials: a control trial (no SSGs), 4v4 SSGs (62.5 m2/player), and 8v8 SSGs (284.4 m2/player). External and internal load were monitored using GPS technology, heart-rate monitors, and rating of perceived exertion. Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), creatine kinase (CK), isokinetic strength, countermovement jump (CMJ), and sprint were determined at baseline

Muscle biopsy and in vitro contracture test in subjects with idiopathic HyperCKemia.

BACKGROUND: Persistent high creatine kinase (CK) levels may reflect underlying subclinical myopathies. In most cases, pathogenesis is unknown and clinical management is unclear. Though clinically asymptomatic, these subjects are potentially susceptible to malignant hyperthermia. METHODS: The authors analyzed 37 subjects with persistent elevation of CK without significant weakness or other neurologic symptoms. Neurologic examination was performed according to manual muscle testing. Muscle biopsy and the in vitro contracture test were performed in all subjects. RESULTS: Twenty-three subjects (

Repetitive arm motion-induced fatigue affects shoulder but not endpoint position sense.

Neck/shoulder pain has previously been linked to repetitive work and muscle fatigue. We have shown that asymptomatic people performing repetitive upper limb tasks display signs of shoulder fatigue and of whole-body compensatory strategies. However, the role played by the proprioceptive system in the production of these compensatory strategies has not been studied. A group of asymptomatic adults (n = 18) performed a repetitive pointing task at shoulder height to fatigue. Before and after fatigue, they performed two position sense tasks, eyes closed: a single-joint task where they abducted their…

Brain cytokines and the 5-HT system during poly I:C-induced fatigue.

Fatigue is evoked not only by peripheral factors, such as muscle fatigue, but also by the central nervous system (CNS). For example, it is generally known that the feeling of fatigue is greatly influenced by psychological aspects, such as motivation. However, little is known about the central mechanisms of fatigue. The clinical symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are shown to include disorders in neuroendocrine, autonomic, and immune systems. On the other hand, it has been demonstrated that cytokines produced in the brain play significant roles in neural-immune interactions through thei…

Electrophysiology and electrodiagnosis of the post-polio motor unit.

Post-poliomyelitis syndrome refers to new symptoms that may occur years after recovery from poliomyelitis. The most common of these symptoms are new weakness, fatigue, and pain. This article describes electrodiagnostic studies--conventional electromyography (EMG), single fiber electromyography (SFEMG), and macroelectromyography (macro-EMG)--that have provided information on the post-polio motor unit and on the possible etiology of some post-polio syndrome symptoms. Muscular fatigue, and indirectly, general fatigue, may be due to neuromuscular junction transmission defects in some post-polio in

Effects of caffeine on neuromuscular function in a non-fatigued state and during fatiguing exercise.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of the study? What are the effects of caffeine on neuromuscular function in a non-fatigued state and during fatiguing exercise? What is the main finding and its importance? In a non-fatigued state, caffeine decreased the duration of the silent period evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation. Caffeine-induced reduction of inhibitory mechanisms in the central nervous system before exercise was associated with an increased performance. Individuals who benefit from caffeine ingestion may experience lower perception of effort during exercise and an acce

Comparing gait performance of people with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease who do and do not wear ankle foot orthoses.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) are commonly prescribed for people with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease. Scant evidence exists to guide the type and timing of orthotic prescription. This study explores the latter issue by investigating the differences in presentation and gait function of people with CMT disease who wore AFOs for daily mobility (n = 11) and a group who did not (n = 21). The aim was to see if there was a difference in the characteristics in people who regularly wear AFOs. METHODS: Primary measures of gait function were a 10-m timed walk (comfortable and max

[Lack of fatigue of the musculature in patients after immobilization--a paradox?].

The isometric strength of knee extensors was measured in patients six weeks after cruciate ligament surgery over a contraction period of 30 sec. The characteristics of the graph obtained form the measurement system were compared to the graphs of uninjured knee extensor muscles. Apart from strength reductions, as expected for atrophic muscle, the pattern of the strength graph led to the impression that these muscles did not fatigue during prolonged contraction. This paradoxical phenomenon can be explained by the existence of central inhibitory mechanisms.

The Multifaceted Cause of Lipid Storage Myopathies, Genetics, and Treatment.

Several inherited metabolic fatty acid disorders present with myopathies. Skeletal muscle accounts for 40% of the body and is important for metabolism, exercise, and movement. Muscle energy failure is manifested by metabolic crises with muscle weakness, sometimes associated with muscle fatigue and failure resulting in acute necrosis or rhabdomyolysis/myoglobinuria episodes. Lack of energy leads to muscle necrosis. Other presentations are weakness and myalgias with lipid storage myopathies in the biopsy. The biomarkers of such disorders are acyl-carnitine with various profiles and need to be ca…

Matcha green tea beverage moderates fatigue and supports resistance training-induced adaptation.

BACKGROUND: Resistance training adaptively increases muscle strength and mass, contributing to athletic performance and health promotion. Dietary intervention with natural foods provides nutrients that help accelerate muscle adaptation to training. Matcha green tea contains several bioactive factors such as antioxidants, amino acids, and dietary fibers; however, its effect on muscle adaptation is unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of matcha beverage intake on muscle adaptation to resistance training. METHODS: Healthy, untrained men were randomized into placebo and mat

High-intensity aerobic exercise training improves exercise capacity, dyspnea, and fatigue in patients with severe asthma using triple inhaler.

OBJECTIVES: Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that affects millions of people worldwide and causes severe symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, and breathing difficulty. Despite modern treatments, 3%-10% of patients develop severe asthma, which requires high-dose medications, and they may still experience frequent and severe symptoms, exacerbations, and psychological impacts. This study aimed to investigate the effects of high-intensity aerobic exercise training (HIAET) in patients with severe asthma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with severe asthma were recruited, and cardiopulmonary

Genetic evaluation of AMPD1, CPT2, and PGYM metabolic enzymes in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a disease that can seriously impair one's quality of life; patients complain of excessive fatigue and myal … uction during work. The aim of this study was to look for evidence of genotype-associated excessive muscle fatigue. Three metabolic genes (AMPD1, CPT2, and PYGM) were therefore fully sequenced in 17 Italian patients with CFS. We examined polymorphisms known to alter the function of these metabolic genes, and compared their genotypic distributions in CFS patients …

Resistance training load does not determine resistance training-induced hypertrophy across upper and lower limbs in healthy young males.

Resistance exercise training (RET) leads to marked interindividual heterogeneity in the hypertrophic response. Whether such heterogeneity is due to endogenous (i.e. inherent biological factors) or exogenous variables (i.e. external load) has not been firmly established. Twenty healthy young male participants completed thrice-weekly resistance exercise sessions for 10 weeks. Each participant had their legs and arms randomly assigned to perform unilateral bicep curls or knee extensions with either a higher (heavier) load (HL: 8-12 repetitions; ∼70%-80% of one-repetition maximum (1RM)) or, in the

Metabolic acidosis augments exercise pressor responses in chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients experience augmented blood pressure (BP) reactivity during exercise that is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. Exaggerated exercise pressor responses in CKD are in part mediated by augmented sympathetic nerve activation due to heightened muscle mechanoreflex. One mechanism that may lead to sensitization of the muscle mechanoreflex in CKD is metabolic acidosis. We hypothesized that CKD patients with low serum [bicarbonate] would exhibit exaggerated increases in arterial BP, greater reductions in muscle interstitial pH, and fatigu

Post-Polio Syndrome.

Post-polio syndrome (PPS) is the term used for the new late manifestations that occur in patients 30 to 40 years after the occurrence of acute poliomyelitis. PPS has been recognized for over 100 years, but is more common at the present time because of the large epidemics of poliomyelitis in the 1940s and 1950s. PPS is manifested by neurologic, musculoskeletal, and general manifestations. Neurologic manifestations include new weakness, muscle atrophy, dysphagia, dysphonia, and respiratory failure. Musculoskeletal manifestations include muscle pain, joint pain, spinal spondylosis and scoliosis,

Impact of motor fatigue on spatiotemporal parameters of gait under single-and dual-task conditions in individuals with chronic ankle instability and copers.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is associated with altered gait mechanics and cognitive-motor deficits, while some individuals with a history of ankle sprain recover successfully as copers. Dual-tasking and fatigue represent common real-world challenges, but their combined effects on gait in CAI compared with copers remain unclear. PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of motor fatigue on spatiotemporal gait parameters under single- and dual-task conditions in individuals with CAI compared with copers. METHODS: Thirty individuals with CAI (mean age 26.7 ± 7.2 years) and 30 age- a

Indicators of throwing arm fatigue in elite adolescent male baseball players: a randomized crossover trial.

Throwing carries an inherent risk of injury that worsens in the presence of arm fatigue. The purpose of this study was to identify markers that could facilitate the early detection of this type of fatigue, by comparing the response to bouts of throwing-specific and running-based exercise. Thirteen elite junior male baseball players were tested twice, 7 days apart with a randomized crossover design. They were assessed for shoulder proprioception, maximal throwing velocity, and throwing accuracy before and after a 10-minute bout of either throwing-specific (THROW) or general (RUN) exercise. Maxi

Aging slows maximum shortening velocity and reduces peak power output of rat diaphragm muscle.

Sarcopenia is the age-related atrophy and weakening (decrease in force per cross-sectional area) of muscle fibers. In rat diaphragm muscle (DIAm), sarcopenia primarily affects type IIx/IIb fibers, which generate greater specific force, have the fastest maximum shortening velocities (Vmax), but display greater fatigue with repeated activation. We hypothesized that, because of the selective effect of sarcopenia on type IIx/IIb DIAm fibers, Vmax and peak power output of the DIAm decrease in old age, whereas endurance during repetitive isovelocity shortening is unaffected. Midcostal DIAm strips we
