Indoor racquet sports injuries.

Family physicians can care for most patients injured while participating in indoor racquet sports. However, patients with injuries to the eye usually require ophthalmologic referral. The most common injuries that occur in persons participating in indoor racquet sports include contusions, sprains and strains, lacerations, eye injuries, bursitis and tendinitis. Musculoskeletal injuries that merit special consideration include lateral epicondylitis, DeQuervain's tenosynovitis, wrist intersection syndrome, patellar pain syndrome, meniscal injuries, Achilles tendinitis and plantar fasciitis. The fa

Advances in Extracellular Matrix-Associated Diagnostics and Therapeutics.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is the common denominator of more than 50 chronic diseases. Some of these chronic pathologies lead to enhanced tissue formation and deposition, whereas others are associated with increased tissue degradation, and some exhibit a combination of both, leading to severe tissue alterations. To develop effective therapies for diseases affecting the lung, liver, kidney, skin, intestine, musculoskeletal system, heart, and solid tumors, we need to modulate the ECM's composition to restore its organization and function. Across diverse organ diseases, there are common denom…

β-Caryophyllene-Loaded Microemulsion-Based Topical Hydrogel: A Promising Carrier to Enhance the Analgesic and Anti-Inflammatory Outcomes.

Musculoskeletal pain and inflammation can vary from localised pain like pain in the shoulders and neck to widespread pain like fibromyalgia, and as per estimates, around 90% of humans have experienced such pain. Oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are frequently prescribed for such conditions but are associated with concerns like gastric irritation and bleeding. In the present study, a microemulsion-based gel comprising β-caryophyllene, isopropyl myristate, Tween 80, and normal saline was prepared as a topical option for managing topical pain and inflammation. The globules of t

Markerless Knee Joint Position Measurement Using Depth Data during Stair Walking.

Climbing and descending stairs are demanding daily activities, and the monitoring of them may reveal the presence of musculoskeletal diseases at an early stage. A markerless system is needed to monitor such stair walking activity without mentally or physically disturbing the subject. Microsoft Kinect v2 has been used for gait monitoring, as it provides a markerless skeleton tracking function. However, few studies have used this device for stair walking monitoring, and the accuracy of its skeleton tracking function during stair walking has not been evaluated. Moreover, skeleton tracking is not

Musculoskeletal interventional radiology: ultrasound and CT.

We aim to describe imaging-guided (ultrasound and CT) interventional techniques in the musculoskeletal system that can be performed by general radiologists, whether in hospitals, primary care clinics, private offices, or other settings. The first requirement for doing these procedures is adequate knowledge of the anatomy of the musculoskeletal system. The second requirement is to inform the patient thoroughly about the technique, the risks involved, and the alternatives available in order to obtain written informed consent. The third requirement is to ensure that the procedure is performed in …

Associated malformations and the "hidden mortality" of gastroschisis.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about associated anomalies in fetuses with gastroschisis (GS) who experience an "atypical perinatal event," defined as spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, termination, or death within 24 hours of birth. PURPOSE: This study aims to compare associated malformation rates in an atypical perinatal event cohort vs newborns with GS surviving longer than 24 hours. METHODS: A national prospective GS database was analyzed for cases with an atypical perinatal event. Associated anomaly rates were compared between this cohort and babies surviving longer than 24 hours. RESULTS:

Evidence-based anatomical review areas derived from systematic analysis of cases from a radiological departmental discrepancy meeting.

AIM: To produce short checklists of specific anatomical review sites for different regions of the body based on the frequency of radiological errors reviewed at radiology discrepancy meetings, thereby creating "evidence-based" review areas for radiology reporting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single centre discrepancy database was retrospectively reviewed from a 5-year period. All errors were classified by type, modality, body system, and specific anatomical location. Errors were assigned to one of four body regions: chest, abdominopelvic, central nervous system (CNS), and musculoskeletal (MSK).

Lifetime prevalence of injuries in incoming division I collegiate football players.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to determine the lifetime prevalence of past injuries in incoming first year football players in a Division 1 college football team. METHODS: Pre-participation questionnaires from 605 first-year football players over 20 years (1996-2015) were examined to determine the prevalence of concussions, stingers, fractures, and musculoskeletal surgeries sustained before playing at the collegiate level. Players were grouped by position: wide receiver and defensive back (WR/DB), offensive and defensive linemen (OL/DL), all other positions (OP), and unknown (UKN).

Management of Immune-mediated Cytopenias in the Era of Cancer Immunotherapy: A Report of 4 Cases.

Recent advancements in immunotherapy have brought promising drugs to fight cancers; a subset of immunotherapy medications are known as checkpoint inhibitors. Their mechanism of action relies on upregulating antitumor response by reversing T-cell suppression; as a consequence the effect can also result in a spectrum of immune related complications. Reported complications to date include: skin, gastrointestinal mucosa, hypophysis, liver, endocrine system, nervous system, kidney, musculoskeletal system and the hematologic system. The management of immune related complications typically includes t…

Pressure Injuries and Management after Spinal Cord Injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in motor paralysis and sensory loss that places individuals at particularly high risk of pressure injuries. Multiple comorbidities associated with autonomic, cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, neurological, and musculoskeletal dysfunction makes it even more likely that pressure injuries will occur. This manuscript will review the structure and function of the integumentary system, and address the multidisciplinary approach required to prevent and manage pressure injuries in this vulnerable population.

Sarcoidosis presenting as penile mass.

Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease with unknown cause characterized by noncaseating granuloma formations. It may present with bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy, skin lesions, eye, and musculoskeletal system involvement. Rare involvement of the genital organs (prostate, testis, epididymis) has also been reported. However, penile involvement is observed quite rare. In this paper, we report a patient with penile mass who was diagnosed with sarcoidosis on the basis of the laboratory, radiological, and pathological investigations.

Coccidiomycosis presenting as a popliteal cyst.

Coccidiomycosis is a fungal infection that primarily causes pulmonary disease. Extrapulmonary dissemination can occur to the musculoskeletal system with the knee joint most frequently involved. This case report describes a patient with coccidiomycosis whose initial presentation was of a popliteal cyst. The need for aggressive surgical and antibiotic treatment to eradicate this infection is discussed. Coccidiomycosis should be considered in a differential diagnosis of patients with popliteal cysts without other obvious etiologies.

Isotretinoin: new therapy for severe acne.

The chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, clinical use, adverse effects, dosage and administration, and FDA-approved indications of isotretinoin, a new agent used for treating acne, are reviewed. Isotretinoin is a synthetic retinoid compound with pharmacologic actions similar to those of other retinoids. Isotretinoin's effects on nodulocystic acne lesions apparently result from its reduction of the size of sebaceous glands, inhibition of sebum production, and inhibition of follicular keratinization. Isotretinoin is administered orally; peak serum drug concentrations occur approximately th

[Diseases caused by biomechanical overload and preventive services in Emilia Romagna, Lombardy, Tuscany and Veneto].

Statistics elaborated in this work are aimed at offering an outline describing the musculoskeletal diseases indicated as professional in our Country, but above all try to emphasize certain critical aspects of the information sources available for a correct and reliable vision of the phenomenon itself. The available data in Italy concerning the pathologies as biomechanic overload make reference, basically, to two different sources: the database of the National Institute for the Insurance of the Accidents at Work (INAIL) and the systems of sanitary surveillance for the professional diseases regi
