Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) seems to originate from ultraviolet light-induced mutations involving the bulge or the outer sheath of the hair follicle cells. However, the etiopathogenic mechanisms involved in the development of these tumors in nonphotoexposed and in hairless areas remain unclear. The cytokeratin (CK) profile (including CK5/6, CK7, CK14, CK15, CK17, and CK19) from a series of different BCC subtypes developing in sun-exposed and non-sun-exposed areas, including hairless regions, was evaluated. The authors have observed that CK7 expression in BCC is associated with the anatomical lo

Basal cell carcinomas with symptomatic perineural invasion are rare entities. We report the case of a 60year-old man (with a grafted kidney), surgically treated in 2007 for a sclerodermiform basal cell carcinoma infiltrating the left nostril. Five years later, a painful left hemifacial hypoesthesia associated with an ulcus rodens of the nasolabial fold appeared. A biopsy confirmed a recurrence. MRI showed an enhancement of the trigeminal ganglion. The patient had a trigeminal perineural invasion secondary to a cutaneous basal cell carcinoma. He received a local intensity-modulated radiotherapy

BACKGROUND: Excision of upper eyelid skin cancer often leads to moderate to large defect. Numerous procedures are available to reconstruct such defects, and the reconstructive path chosen should be individualized for each patient. The aim of the reconstruction is a movable eyelid, perfect corneal protection, good aesthetic quality, and acceptable sequelae at the donor site. The purpose of this paper was to present a unique one-stage eyelid reconstruction procedure.
METHODS: A 79-year-old male suffered from a skin carcinoma on his left medial canthus, which also involved medial tarsal palate o

Presented here are two clinical cases of extensive defects of the scalp secondary to surgical resection of invasive basal cell carcinoma on the parietal region, successfully treated by means of very large, bipedicled fronto-occipital flaps, based anteriorly on the supratrochlear-supraorbital vessels and posteriorly on the occipital and posterior auricular vessels. Considering both the location and the large size of the scalp defects, different surgical techniques are discussed and the potential use of bipedicled scalp flaps is considered, designed either sagittally or coronally as fronto-occip

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After studying this article, the participant should be able to: 1. Identify common precancerous and malignant cutaneous growths of the head and neck. 2. Recommend surgical treatment, including margins, based on consensus guidelines. 3. Counsel patients as to available evidence for expected recurrence, follow-up, and morbidity.
SUMMARY: Skin lesion excision is the most common procedure performed by plastic surgeons. Because of the cumulative risk factors of sun and carcinogen exposure, the head and neck are the most frequently affected regions of the body. Timely diagnosis

Cytologic findings on various vulvar squamous lesions are described in order to elucidate the usefulness of vulvar cytology. Lichen sclerosus, hyperplastic dystrophy and dysplasia with a few exfoliated anucleate squamous cells could not be differentiated cytologically. Numerous parakeratotic cells and dyskaryotic cells were identified in squamous cell carcinoma in situ. Three cytologic patterns were presented in cases of frankly invasive squamous cell carcinoma: negative cytology with parakeratotic cells, suspicious cytology with dyskaryotic cells and positive cytology with malignant cells. BACKGROUND: Within 1 month of diagnosis, 40% of patients with positive blood cultures will develop CNS complications. Rare pathogens, that is, Paeniclostridium sordellii, pose diagnostic challenges due to atypical presentations and detection difficulties.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old man presented with metabolic encephalopathy and diabetes insipidus. Imaging showed bilateral basal ganglia abnormalities and an enhancing lesion near the anterior commissure, suspicious for neoplasm. Postmortem findings included reactive gliosis, atypical lymphocytic inflammation, and polyclonal plasma cells.

BACKGROUND: Basal cell adenoma (BCA) is a rare benign tumour that has unique histological characteristics and primarily arises in the parotid glands. According to published reports, nearby tissue destruction by BCA seems impossible.
CASE SUMMARY: We presented a case of a 54-year-old woman with a mass in the deep lobe of the right parotid gland involving the ipsilateral skull base and mastoid. The patient exhibited gradual right facial swelling but no other obvious symptoms. Combined resection of the total right parotid gland and partial skull base excision were performed. The biopsy conducted

BACKGROUND: Collision tumors combining basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and melanoma are exceptionally rare, and their distinction from melanoma colonization remains controversial.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old man presented with a persistent ulcer on the lower lip, initially believed to represent BCC. Wedge resection revealed a 2.2 cm ulcerated lesion composed of BCC with malignant melanocyte colonization. Immunohistochemical analysis confirmed the biphasic nature: the melanocytic component was positive for S100, Melan-A, SOX10, and PRAME (with p16 loss), and the epithelial component was positi

INTRODUCTION: Perineural invasion is a unique route for tumor dissemination. In basal cell carcinomas, the incidence is low, but increases in advanced cases. Its importance is recognized but not fully understood.
OBJECTIVE: To compare head and neck basal cell carcinomas with and without perineural invasion.
METHODS: A retrospective medical chart review of multidisciplinary surgeries for basal cell carcinomas that required a head and neck surgery specialist in a tertiary referral center was performed. Clinical-demographics and histopathological features were analyzed.
RESULTS: Of 354 cases,

INTRODUCTION: Basocellular skin carcinoma (BCC) is the most common cancer in the human population. BCC almost appeared at adult's people, but it can be found at children, too.
THE AIM: The aim of this study was to determine which the position of BCC on the head skin is the most difficult for the treatment and what the reasons are for it.
METHODS: With the prospective study, from June 2004 to June 2011, were compared the results of treatment of basocellular carcinomas (BCC) of the head skin. The examinees were divided into 3 groups. The first group, the group A (38 patients) was consisted of

Of 30 consecutive patients with ocular adnexal basal cell carcinoma, 18 (60%) had at least one additional unsuspected foci of basal cell carcinoma. The patients most likely to have additional basal cell skin cancer were women, those with previous basal cell carcinoma, and those whose eyelid lesions were recurrent, located at the medial canthus, or of the sclerosing cell type. Using a slit lamp helped us to identify suspicious lesions on the face, but we often required the assistance of a dermatologist to diagnose sclerosing lesions. Comprehensive treatment of basal cell carcinomas should inclu

Bronchial endocrine cells containing gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP), a mammalian analog of bombesin, and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) were immunohistochemically localized in paraffin sections of normal and pathologic human lungs. GRP-containing cells were present in fetal bronchi at the 12th gestational week and in "neuroepithelial bodies" about the time of delivery. In normal adult lungs, a few isolated GRP-containing cells were present in bronchial and bronchiolar mucosa. In bronchiectatic or fibrotic lungs, small clusters of GRP-containing cells were occasionally noted in basal bronc

Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours are associated with development of further primary tumours. Certain conditions give an inherited predisposition to developing neoplasia. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper to report a patient with neuroendocrine tumour and three other tumours: a further bowel cancer, a brain tumour and a skin cancer. We report a case of a 42-year-old Caucasian man presenting with clinical features of intestinal obstruction who on histopathology of surgical specimen was found to have two distinct tumours of the bowel: a colonic adenocarcinoma at t

BACKGROUND: The rate of recurrence of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in the periorbital region is higher than that in other areas because of the spread of the tumor along barrier structures.
OBJECTIVE: A better understanding of the biological behavior of BCC in this area, in particular as it relates to the lacrimal system, should improve the outcome of surgery.
METHODS: A study was made of two cases of BCC that developed in the periorbital region and invaded the lacrimal system.
RESULTS: The tumors were found to have invaded the lacrimal system along the mucosal epithelium. Magnetic resonance i

Three cases of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) with extensive invasion are described. The first two patients had meningeal and cerebral involvement with exposure of their dural meninges following full thickness skull erosion. The third patient had bilateral orbital and optic nerve involvement resulting in complete blindness. All three patients subsequently died from their disease.

A case of Kaposi sarcoma (KS) with cutaneous and splenic involvement is reported. Carcinoma of the left colon and basal cell epithelioma arose eleven years after KS. Genetic, viral, and immunologic factors which may promote initiation and development of Kaposi sarcoma are reviewed. The responsibility of immunodeficiency, whether resulting from therapy or from other causes, in carcinogenesis is discussed. Prolonged survival may be seen after KS. Another primary malignant disease (lymphoma or solid tumor) may arise. The authors suggest that the risk of immunologic disorders, occurring spontaneou
