The environmental fate and the loss of toxicity of two important antifouling actives, zinc pyrithione (ZnPT) and copper pyrithione (CuPT), were investigated using a bioassay study and an outdoor microcosm study. A supramolecular approach for potential detection of SO2 is presented, which is based on the "old" donor-acceptor chemistry between SO2 and amines and includes an indicator-displacement assay. When amines were added to Zn-tetraphenylporphyrin 1 in CHCl3, the solution changed from red to dark green. cis-[RuIV(bpy)2(py)(O)]2+ oxidizes cumene (2-phenylpropane) in acetonitrile solution primarily to cumyl alcohol (2-phenyl-2-propanol), alpha-methylstyrene, and acetophenone. Contrary to a prior report, the rate of the reaction is not accelerated by added nucleophiles. There is thus no evidence for the hydride transfer mechanism originally proposed. Instead, the results are consistent with a mechanism of initial hydrogen atom transfer from cumene to the ruthenium oxo group. A new thiazolidine-type antibiotic with zinc in its structure, designated transvalencin A, was isolated from Nocardia sp. IFM 10065, a clinical isolate from a patient with actinomycotic mycetoma. The strain was identified as Nocardia transvalensis based on its morphological, phenotypic and phylogenetic characteristics. Transvalencin A showed antimicrobial activity against fungi such as Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Cryptococcus neoformans. This report describes the synthesis and characterization of two (111)In-labeled DTPA-peptide conjugates (DTPA-MA and DTPA-BA). The coordination chemistry of model phenolic ligands (pyrocatechol, salicylic acid, and 2,2'-biphenol) that are able to form respectively five-, six-, or seven-membered rings with titanium(IV) alkoxides is investigated. With pyrocatechol, a polynuclear complex containing 10 Ti atoms was characterized with a not very common doubly bridging mu3-(O,O,O',O') coordination mode. With salicylic acid, a monomeric tris(chelate) complex was obtained. With 2,2'-biphenol, a polynuclear complex containing six Ti atoms was obtained showing both mu2-(O,O') and mu2-(O,O,O') coordination modes for the ligands.

Visceral leishmaniasis should be suspected in renal transplant recipients in whom a fever develops of unknown origin. A 53-year-old renal transplant recipient developed pyrexia, hepatosplenomegaly, and pancytopenia 4 years after transplantation. Antileishmaniasis serology was negative, and the diagnosis was confirmed through bone marrow examination. Treatment with glucantine (N-methylglucamine antimoniate) led to acute pancreatitis, and treatment with ketoconazole plus allopurinol for 21 days was effective to eradicate Leishmania donovani.

OBJECTIVES: To assess, in a blinded study, the usefulness of bowel preparation in improving the quality of radiography of the renal tract in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Plain abdominal radiographs of 56 patients with SCI were selected; 24 of the patients had received bowel preparation and 32 had not. The films were independently assessed by one radiologist and one urologist unaware of the treatment and identity of the patients. Each film was divided into five regions of interest and scores of 1-4 (1 for least and 4 for best visibility) assigned to each area.

A metal chelating ligand is bonded to alpha-, beta-, and gamma-cyclodextrin by the reaction of diethylenetraminepentaacetic dianhydride with the corresponding 6-mono- and 2-mono(amine)cyclodextrin. A mass spectrometric study of several tricarbonyl (eta(6)-phenyl methanols) of chromium(0) was performed. Electron ionization (EI), chemical ionization (CI) and fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectra were acquired for each molecule, and compared in order to establish a general fragmentation pattern. The suggested pathways were investigated and confirmed by means of constant b/e linked scans and high resolution data. In addition a Hammett-McLafferty correlation for some peaks derived from the molecular ions was accomplished.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The primary aim was to investigate the influence of the starch matrix on the T1 relaxivities of starch particles labeled with gadolinium and dysprosium diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (GdDTPA-SP and DyDTPA-SP). Nitric oxide can be electrocatalytically reduced at electrodes modified with electropolymerized films of [Cr(v-tpy)2]3+. Upon further modification with a thin film of Nafion (to prevent interferences from anions, especially nitrite), these electrodes can be employed as NO sensors in solution with submicromolar detection limits and fast response. We have carried out preliminary studies of cellular NO release from Rhodobacter sphaeroides bacterial cells with excellent results.
