Electrophysiological markers of visuocortical development.

The development of noninvasive techniques for the assessment of functional brain maturation is critical. The present study analyzed 63 babies' and children's (27 days to 5.5 years) cerebral responses to a pattern-reversal visual stimulation using high-density (128 electrodes) electrophysiological recordings. Developmental data were further compared with those of young adults (n = 16). Tremendous changes in pattern visual evoked potentials (pVEPs) morphology were observed between 7 and 24 months characterized by the emergence of negative components labeled "N70" and "N145" and the reduction of

Prosopagnosia. Report of four cases.

4 patients with prosopagnosia are described. They presented associated neuropsychological deficits (achromatopsia, topographical disorientation) and visual field defects. In 1 case, gross pathological examination revealed bilateral symmetrical infero-medial occipito-temporal infarcts. In 2 other cases, computer tomography (CT) demonstrated bilateral inferior temporo-occipital infarction. In 1 case CT showed only occipital infarctions in the occipital lobes. This brings to 16 the number of anatomically studied cases of prosopagnosia (8 by necropsy, 8 by CT). In contrast to clinical localization

Geometric patterns of time-delay plots from different cardiac rhythms and arrhythmias using short-term EKG signals.

OBJECTIVE: To date, no systematic work has been intended to describe spatio-temporal patterns of cardiac rhythms using only short series of RR intervals, to facilitate visual or computerized-aided identification of EKG motifs for use in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to detect and classify eye-catching geometric patterns of Poincaré time-delay plots from different types of cardiac rhythms and arrhythmias using short-term EKG signals. METHODS: Approximately 150-300 representative, consecutive beats were retrieved from 24-h Holter registers of 100 patients with different heart rhy

Anterior part of fronto-temporal language network as the neural basis of morphologically structured word form processing: evidence from Korean morphologically complex word.

The present fMRI study investigated which subregions of the visual word recognition network contribute to morphologically structured word form processing in Korean. Participants performed two separate lexical decision tasks in the scanner. In the Eojeol task, stimuli were three-syllable words composed of a disyllabic noun plus a case particle, whereas in the Noun task, stimuli were disyllabic (DSN) and trisyllabic (TSN) nouns. Behaviorally, reaction time was significantly longer in the Eojeol condition than in both DSN and TSN conditions, indicating greater processing demands for morphological

Dorsal-movement and ventral-form regions are functionally connected during visual-speech recognition.

Faces convey social information such as emotion and speech. Facial emotion processing is supported via interactions between dorsal-movement and ventral-form visual cortex regions. Here, we explored, for the first time, whether similar dorsal-ventral interactions (assessed via functional connectivity), might also exist for visual-speech processing. We then examined whether altered dorsal-ventral connectivity is observed in adults with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a disorder associated with impaired visual-speech recognition. We acquired functional magnetic resonance imaging

Methotrexate causes persistent deficits in memory and executive function in a juvenile animal model.

Methotrexate is a dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor widely employed in curative treatment for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). However, methotrexate administration is also associated with persistent cognitive deficits among long-term childhood cancer survivors. Animal models of methotrexate-induced cognitive deficits have primarily utilized adult animals. The purpose of present study is to investigate the neurotoxicity of methotrexate in juvenile rats and its relevant mechanisms. The doses and schedule of systemic and intrathecal methotrexate, given from post-natal age 3-7 wee

Learning, plasticity, and atypical generalization in children with autism.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show accelerated learning in some tasks, degraded learning in others, and distinct deficits when generalizing to novel situations. Recent simulations with connectionist models suggest that deficits in cortical plasticity mechanisms can account for atypical patterns of generalization shown by some children with ASD. We tested the surprising theoretical prediction, from past simulations, that the children with ASD who show atypical generalization in perceptual categorization tasks will benefit more from training with a single prototypical member of

Stimulus similarity and encoding time influence incidental recognition memory in adult monkeys with selective hippocampal lesions.

Recognition memory impairment after selective hippocampal lesions in monkeys is more profound when measured with visual paired-comparison (VPC) than with delayed nonmatching-to-sample (DNMS). To clarify this issue, we assessed the impact of stimuli similarity and encoding duration on the VPC performance in monkeys with hippocampal lesions and sham-operated controls. The novelty preference was compared for pictures of dissimilar vs. similar objects and for encoding duration of 30, 10, 5, and 1 sec. The novelty preference was spared after hippocampal lesions with dissimilar (colored or black and

Emotion recognition in Huntington's disease and frontotemporal dementia.

A well-documented feature of Huntington's disease (HD) is disproportionate impairment in the ability to recognise the emotional expression of disgust. However, this finding has been challenged by studies that report no differential disgust impairment and attribute apparent differences across emotions to task difficulty. The present study sought to shed light on disparities in findings through a comparative study of emotion recognition in HD and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Ten HD, 12 FTD patients and 12 healthy controls were administered 10 tasks assessing facial and vocal recognition of emo

Developmental phonagnosia: a selective deficit of vocal identity recognition.

Phonagnosia, the inability to recognize familiar voices, has been studied in brain-damaged patients but no cases due to developmental problems have been reported. Here we describe the case of KH, a 60-year-old active professional woman who reports that she has always experienced severe voice recognition difficulties. Her hearing abilities are normal, and an MRI scan showed no evidence of brain damage in regions associated with voice or auditory perception. To better understand her condition and to assess models of voice and high-level auditory processing, we tested KH on behavioural tasks meas

Visual processing in pure alexia: a case study.

Whether pure alexia is a selective disorder that affects reading only, or if it reflects a more general visual disturbance, is highly debated. We have investigated the selectivity of visual deficits in a pure alexic patient (NN) using a combination of psychophysical measures, mathematical modelling and more standard experimental paradigms. NN's naming and categorization of line drawings were normal with regards to both errors and reaction times (RTs). Psychophysical experiments revealed that NN's recognition of single letters at fixation was clearly impaired, and recognition of single digits w

Hemorrhagic Intracranial Cavernoma Presenting as a Homonymous Horizontal Sectoranopia.

Hemorrhagic lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) insults are rare but have been reported in association with tumors, vascular malformations, and trauma. The localization of LGN lesions is facilitated by recognition of pathognomonic visual field defects. A 21-year old woman developed a sudden onset painless left homonymous horizontal sectoranopia. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a hemorrhagic cavernous malformation of the right temporal lobe. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and Humphrey perimetry findings localized the lesion to the right LGN. Specifically, OCT testing revealed a right homon

Impaired face and word recognition without object agnosia.

A leading account of high-level visual recognition proposes that the recognition of faces, objects, and words is mediated by two processing capacities. Words are assumed to require the capacity to represent numerous parts, whereas faces are processed wholistically. and hence require the representation of complex units. Object recognition requires the capacity to represent both numerous and complex parts. As object recognition depends upon the same processing capacities underlying face and word recognition, this account predicts that patients with severe alexia and prosopagnosia should be defic

Lack of early pattern stimulation prevents normal development of the alpha (Y) retinal ganglion cell population in the cat.

Binocular deprivation of pattern vision (BD) early in life permanently impairs global motion perception. With the SMI-32 antibody against neurofilament protein (NFP) as a marker of the motion-sensitive Y-cell pathway (Van der Gucht et al. [2001] Cereb. Cortex 17:2805-2819), we analyzed the impact of early BD on the retinal circuitry in adult, perceptually characterized cats (Burnat et al. [2005] Neuroreport 16:751-754). In controls, large retinal ganglion cells exhibited a strong NFP signal in the soma and in the proximal parts of the dendritic arbors. The NFP-immunoreactive dendrites typicall

Functional magnetic resonance imaging investigation of overlapping lateral occipitotemporal activations using multi-voxel pattern analysis.

Several functional areas are proposed to reside in human lateral occipitotemporal cortex, including the motion-selective human homolog of macaque area MT (hMT), object-form-selective lateral occipital complex (LO), and body-selective extrastriate body area (EBA). Indeed, several functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have reported significant activation overlap among these regions. The standard interpretation of this overlap would be that the common areas of activation reflect engagement of common neural systems. Alternatively, motion, object form, and body form may be processed

Holistic component of image perception in mammogram interpretation: gaze-tracking study.

PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis that rapid and accurate performance of the proficient observer in mammogram interpretation involves a shift in the mechanism of image perception from a relatively slow search-to-find mode to a relatively fast holistic mode. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This HIPAA-compliant study had institutional review board approval, and participant informed consent was obtained; patient informed consent was not required. The eye positions of three full-time mammographers, one attending radiologist, two mammography fellows, and three radiology residents were recorded during the int

Pattern visually evoked cortical potential and magnetic resonance imaging in optic neuritis.

We studied the extent of optic nerve lesion with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 24 patients with optic neuritis and compared it with visually evoked cortical potentials (VECP). Patients were divided into acute and chronic stage groups according to the duration of the disease from its onset. The short TI inversion recovery (STIR) mode of the MRI was selected for study. In the acute stage group, abnormally high signals of optic nerve on MRI were demonstrated in 11 of 12 eyes, and the amplitude and peak latency of pattern VECP were unrelated to the extent of the optic nerve lesion visualized

[Pattern ERG and VECP following optic neuritis in childhood].

Pattern ERGs and pattern VECPs were recorded in 12 patients who had suffered from optic neuritis in childhood. When each individual's eyes were compared, the eye with the longer P100-latency in pattern VECP was found to have the smaller amplitude in pattern ERG. The latency differences correlated with the amplitude differences. These findings confirm that after optic neuritis the amplitude of pattern ERG is reduced.

Brief Encounters with Real Objects Modulate the Medial Parietal But Not Occipitotemporal Cortex.

Humans are skilled at recognizing everyday objects from pictures, even if we have never encountered the depicted object in real life. However, if we have encountered an object, how does that real-world experience affect the representation of its photographic image in the human brain? We developed a paradigm that involved brief real-world manual exploration of everyday objects prior to the measurement of brain activity with fMRI while viewing pictures of those objects (40 participants, 28 females). We found that while object-responsive regions in the lateral occipital and ventral temporal corte
