Personality dimensions in persons symptomatically at risk of psychosis: pronounced but lacking a characteristic profile.

AIM: Personality dimensions are frequently abnormal in psychosis. We examined if these abnormalities form a personality profile that is characteristic for patients symptomatically at risk of psychosis. METHODS: Four higher order personality dimensions were assessed in 104 at-risk patients, 67 clinical and 97 healthy controls with the 'Dimensional Assessment of Personality Pathology', and analysed by two-step cluster procedure to detect personality profiles. Logistic regression was used to test for predictors of profile assignment. RESULTS: Low and high scorers were distinguished by two profi…

The personal touch: strategies toward personalized vaccines and predicting immune responses to them.

The impact of vaccines on public health and wellbeing has been profound. Smallpox has been eradicated, polio is nearing eradication, and multiple diseases have been eliminated from certain areas of the world. Unfortunately, we now face diseases such as hepatitis C, malaria or tuberculosis, as well as new and re-emerging pathogens for which we lack effective vaccines. Empirical approaches to vaccine development have been successful in the past, but may not be up to the current infectious disease challenges facing us. New, directed approaches to vaccine design, development, and testing need to b

Person-to-person transmission of norovirus resulting in an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis at a summer camp.

BACKGROUND: A significant proportion of norovirus (NV) gastroenteritis outbreaks described in the Spanish literature have been because of contaminated food or water. AIM: This study describes an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis because of NV in which there was person-to-person transmission. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was carried out; we established the case definition for primary and secondary cases. An epidemiological survey was designed, including possible food exposures, and clinical and laboratory data. Water and stool samples were taken from affected individual

Cognitive, personality, and social factors associated with adolescents' online personal information disclosure.

The current study aims to understand the factors that influence adolescents' disclosure of personally identifiable information (PII) on social networking sites (SNSs). A survey was conducted among 780 adolescent participants (between 13 and 18) who were Facebook users. Structural equation modeling was used for analyzing the data and obtaining an overarching model that include cognitive, personality, and social factors that influence adolescents' PII disclosure. Results showed privacy concern as the cognitive factor reduces adolescents' PII disclosure and it serves as a potential mediator for p…

Decision-making deficits in normal elderly persons associated with executive personality disturbances.

BACKGROUND: The problems that some community-dwelling elderly persons develop in real-world decision-making may have disastrous consequences for their health and financial well-being. Investigations across the adult life span have identified personality as an important individual differences variable that is related to decision-making ability. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between personality characteristics, as rated by an informant, and complex decision-making performance among elderly persons. It was hypothesized that deficits in decision-making would be associat…

Acromioclavicular joint arthrosis in persons with spinal cord injury and able-bodied persons.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence, severity and risk of acromioclavicular (AC) joint arthrosis in persons presenting with shoulder pain between a spinal cord injury (SCI) and able-bodied population. In the SCI population, prevalence and severity of AC joint arthrosis were examined with respect to age, gender and lesion characteristics. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of medical records and magnetic resonance images (MRI) collected in an outpatient orthopaedics clinic. RESULTS: Sixty-eight persons with SCI and 105 able-bodied persons were included in the study. The overall MRI prevalence o

Personality disorders and accentuations in at-risk persons with and without conversion to first-episode psychosis.

AIM: The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition Cluster A personality disorders (PDs), particularly schizotypal PD, are considered a part of the schizophrenia spectrum and a risk factor of psychosis. The role of PDs and personality accentuations (PAs) in predicting conversion to psychosis was studied in patients symptomatically considered at risk, assuming a major role of the schizotypal subtype. METHODS: PDs and PAs, assessed at baseline with a self-report questionnaire, were compared between risk-, gender- and age-matched at-risk patients with (n = 50) and wit…

Person-to-person transmission of Kingella kingae among day care center attendees.

Fifty Kingella kingae organisms, isolated from tonsillar cultures of day care center attendees during an 11-month period, and 60 isolates derived from epidemiologically unrelated individuals, including 19 isolates from respiratory carriers and 41 isolates from patients with invasive infections, were typed by immunoblotting, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, and ribotyping. One strain, defined by unique immunoblotting, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, and ribotyping patterns, represented 14 day care isolates (28%) and was frequently isolated during the first half of the follow-up period; a sec

Estimation of personal exposure to tobacco smoke with a newly developed nicotine personal monitor.

To evaluate the actual level of exposure of nonsmokers to tobacco smoke in their living environments, a convenient personal monitor of nicotine specific for tobacco smoke has been developed. The nicotine personal monitor consists of a sampler tube containing 450 mg of Uniport-S coated with silicon OV-17 and a portable sampling pump with a mechanical counter for obtaining total sampling volume. Using the personal monitor attached to a nonsmoker, ambient nicotine was collected in the sampler tube by drawing environmental air at a constant flow rate for a maximum period of 8 hr. The collected nic

An outbreak of Norwalk gastroenteritis associated with swimming in a pool and secondary person-to-person transmission.

In June 1977 an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis affected 103 students and teachers at an elementary school in Ohio. The illness typically lasted 24 hours or less and was characterized by vomiting (86%) and cramping (70%), but more than half of the persons involved also reported having nausea, diarrhea, and headache. Similar illness frequently followed in household members (29%) of families with primary cases. Investigation revealed that 70% of the children and teachers who swam in a pool at an all day outing June 1 (4 classrooms) and 55% of those who swam during a similar outing June 2 (2 cl

Pathology of personality organization and problematic Internet use in adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: Personality organization model was originally used to conceptualize personality pathology in adults. Recently, it has also been increasingly used to understand personality psychopathology in adolescence. Problematic Internet use (PIU) is currently becoming a serious problem in the area of youth mental health and its prevalence is increasing. The aim of our study was to show that the level of pathology of personality structures may be positively associated with the severity of PIU symptoms in adolescents. METHODS: Polish adolescents (N = 443; 62.5% girls) aged 12 to 18 years (M = 1…

Bridging personality, time poverty, and rest intolerance: a network analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Rest intolerance-the inability to rest without experiencing negative emotions or cognitive distress-is an emerging psychological phenomenon. This study aimed to explore the complex interplay among personality traits, state anxiety, perceived time poverty, and rest intolerance. METHODS: Using a sample of 541 college students, we constructed a 13-node regularized partial correlation network at the dimension level, excluding one unreliable subscale. RESULTS: Results revealed that Neuroticism, Time Pressure, and Negative Feelings emerged as the central nodes within their respective…

The validity of borderline personality disorder: Robins and Guze applied.

Debate about borderline personality disorder (BPD) has intensified, with some proposing its absorption into complex post-traumatic stress disorder and others questioning whether the diagnosis is harmful. These debates often obscure the central issue of construct validity. This paper evaluates whether BPD constitutes a coherent clinical entity. Drawing on Robins and Guze's classic diagnostic validators - symptom specificity, heritability, course of illness, biological markers and treatment response - the evidence demonstrates that BPD is a robustly validated psychiatric disorder that should be …

P is for personality: Commentary on Caspi et al. (2026).

Caspi et al. (see record 2026-80066-001) highlight substantive questions over methodological debates when considering covariation of disorders across development. In this commentary, we argue that personality and temperament offer models through which such heterogeneity should be understood. Personality traits index a wide range of biological, psychological, and behavioral individual differences and share common structures with dimensional models of psychopathology. As such, they are particularly useful for identifying both transdiagnostic and domain-specific processes of psychopathology. For …

Replication challenges in linking personality to resting-state functional connectomics.

An increasing number of studies are currently focusing on "personality neuroscience," a term denoting the research aimed at neuroimaging correlates of inter-individual temperament and character variability. Among other methods, a graph theoretical analysis of the functional connectivity in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data was applied in a study by, reporting novel functional connectivity correlates of personality traits. The current paper presents a conceptual replication of the results of this study and discusses the related challenges, including an extension of the or…

Personality Heterogeneity Shapes the Neural Organization of Conditioned Threat Learning.

How individual differences in personality structure relate to the neural mechanisms of fear conditioning remains an important question for precision psychiatry. Here, combining multidimensional personality profiling with spatiotemporal neuroimaging analyses in a multi-site cohort, we show that personality-defined heterogeneity is associated with distinct neural organization of conditioned threat learning. Rather than reflecting exaggerated neural responses to threat, elevated neuroticism was characterized by a reduced capacity to differentiate conditioned threat from safety signals. This patte…

Clinical, cognitive and neuropsychiatric correlates of personality in Wilson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Wilson's disease (WD) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hepatic, neurologic, or psychiatric symptoms. Compared to other recognized clinical symptoms, the personality profile of WD patients remains under-investigated. This study compared personality traits in a sample of adults with WD and healthy controls (HC). Moreover, we assessed the cognitive and affective correlates of personality within the WD group. METHODS: We enrolled 20 patients affected with genetically confirmed WD, with prevalent extrapyramidal symptoms, and 20 age and education-matched HC. Partici…

Personality traits and cortical structure link childhood maltreatment to impulsivity.

Background: Childhood maltreatment is associated with behavioural dysregulation, including heightened impulsivity, but the psychological and neurobiological pathways linking early adversity to impaired self-regulation remain unclear. Methods: This study tested theory-informed statistical mediation models to examine whether specific childhood maltreatment subtypes were associated with impulsivity through region-specific cortical thickness and personality traits. Sixty-one healthy adults completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, NEO Five-Factor Inventory, and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, and …
