Defensive hostility: relationship to multiple markers of cardiac ischemia in patients with coronary disease.

Three studies assessed whether the combined traits of hostility and defensiveness identify a group of hostile individuals with functionally severe coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD patients completed the Cook-Medley Hostility Inventory (Ho) and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (MC). Patients were classified into 4 groups: defensive hostile (DH: high Ho, high MC), low hostile (LH: low Ho, low MC), high hostile (HH: high Ho, low MC), and defensive (Def: low Ho, high MC). DH in comparison to HH, LH, and Def CAD patients demonstrate the greatest perfusion defects as measured by exerci

Social support reduces cardiovascular reactivity to psychological challenge: a laboratory model.

In this study we investigated the effects of nonevaluative social interaction on the cardiovascular response to psychological challenge. Thirty-nine college-age females appeared accompanied ("Friend" condition) or unaccompanied ("Alone" condition) to an experimental laboratory. In the Friend condition, partners were present while the subject participated in two laboratory tasks, and the partners' evaluation potential was minimized by design. Subjects in the Friend condition showed reduced heart rate reactivity to both tasks, relative to the Alone group, an attenuated task-related systolic bloo

What Makes It Look Like That? Prototypicality and Color Diagnosticity for the Rorschach.

The Rorschach is one of the most widely used tests to assess personality functioning. Among the various categories, determinants play a fundamental role, yet sometimes their coding leaves room for subjective judgment and therefore ambiguities. This study investigates prototypicality and color diagnosticity within the Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS), focusing on how color-object associations influence test's administration. In fact, prototypicality (the degree to which an object's feature aligns with its conventional representation) interacts with color diagnosticity (the extent

Examining Nutrition Knowledge, Skills, and Eating Behaviours in People with Severe Mental Illness: A Cross-Sectional Comparison among Psychiatric Inpatients, Outpatients, and Healthy Adults.

Compared to the general population, people with severe mental illness (SMI) have an increased risk of weight gain and metabolic syndrome, but also of malnutrition, in part due to unhealthy lifestyle behaviours. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to identify barriers to healthy eating, including nutrition knowledge and skills in people with SMI. For this purpose, we compared the means of anthropometric data such as body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, and interview data on nutrition knowledge and skills, health-related variables, eating behaviours, personality, motivation, and attitudes

Do State and Trait Affect Measures Retain Their Measurement Properties during a Disaster? An Investigation of Measurement Invariance during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Psychologists have begun to study the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on emotionality, though such investigations assume that the measurement properties of affect scales have not changed as a function of the pandemic. To our knowledge, no prior study has tested measurement invariance (MI) of an affect scale during a disaster, and very few studies have explored MI of scales administered through ecological momentary assessment (EMA). The current study tested invariance of trait and state affect measures across homogenous groups of 18-year-olds assessed prior to and during the first acute phase o

Metabolomics and psychological features in fibromyalgia and electromagnetic sensitivity.

Fibromyalgia (FM) as Fibromyalgia and Electromagnetic Sensitivity (IEI-EMF) are a chronic and systemic syndrome. The main symptom is represented by strong and widespread pain in the musculoskeletal system. The exact causes that lead to the development of FM and IEI-EMF are still unknown. Interestingly, the proximity to electrical and electromagnetic devices seems to trigger and/or amplify the symptoms. We investigated the blood plasma metabolome in IEI-EMF and healthy subjects using 1H NMR spectroscopy coupled with multivariate statistical analysis. All the individuals were subjected to tests

The association between Toxoplasma gondii infection and postpartum blues.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular protozoan parasite infecting approximately 30% of the global human population. It has often been suggested that chronic infection with T. gondii is related to personality changes and various mental disorders including depression. It is not known whether this includes post-partum blues or depression. In this study, we test the hypothesis that there is a relationship between T. gondii infection and post-partum blues by measuring the association between infection and postpartum blues. METHODS: A total of 475 Chinese women who have just

Hypothalamic-pituitary axis response to a 0.25-MG dexamethasone test in women with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia has been reported as having some clinical overlap with both depression and emotionally-unstable disorders, although both types of disorders present different cortisol suppression response to dexamethasone. In this study we investigated the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system (HPA) in the fibromyalgic syndrome (FMS) using a dexamethasone suppression test (DST) of 0.25 mg designed to specifically detect cortisol hypersuppression. We studied 59 women (20 patients and 39 healthy controls) to whom the DST was administered together with a battery of psychometric tests. In our results,

Real-time Quaking-induced Conversion Assay for the Diagnosis of Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease in a Living Patient.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is the most common prion disease in humans with an incidence of one case per million inhabitants worldwide. The sporadic form of CJD (sCJD) is spontaneous and accounts for 85% of cases. Its symptoms include rapidly progressive dementia, ataxic gait, personality changes, myoclonus, coma, and eventually death. The challenging diagnosis is currently made by a combination of clinical criteria and supporting tests such as electroencephalography (EEG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) studies. These modalities can be falsely pos

Parental style and Cloninger's model in psychosis.

Parental style and Cloninger's dimensions are associated with psychosis, but it is still unclear whether temperament, character and parenting variables are linked to specific psychotic symptoms. This study extends previous research exploring these issues. 78 patients with psychosis and 156 control subjects were recruited. Parental style was evaluated using the Measure of Parental Style. Temperament and character were evaluated using the Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised. Psychotic symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. T-tests, correlations and moderat

Childhood emotional abuse and neglect in obese patients with and without binge eating disorder: Personality and psychopathology correlates in adulthood.

The link between childhood traumatic experiences such as sexual and physical abuse and EDs in adulthood has been widely demonstrated. To date, however, little research focused on the association between emotional abuse and neglect in childhood and Binge Eating Disorder (BED) and obesity in adulthood. We enrolled 127 patients [84 with BED and 43 obese] and 45 healthy controls (HCs). All participants were administered the same battery of psychometric tests. Between-group differences were explored and the relationship between emotional abuse and neglect in childhood and personality and psychopath

Association between total serum cholesterol and suicide attempts in subjects with major depressive disorder: Exploring the role of clinical and biochemical confounding factors.

OBJECTIVES: We tested whether serum total cholesterol levels might be associated with recent suicide attempts in subjects with major depressive disorder, after controlling for relevant individual characteristics. DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a comparative cross-sectional study including consecutive inpatients with major depressive disorder. We differentiated subjects admitted for a recent serious (violent or non-violent) suicide attempt and those without such recent history. Total cholesterol was measured from fasting blood tests. RESULTS: At univariate analyses, suicide attempters had l

Who's boarding in the psychiatric emergency service?

INTRODUCTION: When a psychiatric patient in the emergency department requires inpatient admission, but no bed is available, they may become a "boarder." The psychiatric emergency service (PES) has been suggested as one means to reduce psychiatric boarding, but the frequency and characteristics of adult PES boarders have not been described. METHODS: We electronically extracted electronic medical records for adult patients presenting to the PES in an urban county safety-net hospital over 12 months. Correlative analyses included Student's t-tests and multivariate regression. RESULTS: 521 of 536
