PURPOSE: To compare and contrast standard and alternative versions of refractor head (phoropter)-based charts used to determine reading addition.
METHODS: Forty one presbyopic subjects aged between 42 and 60 years were tested. Tentative additions were determined using a red-green background letter chart, and 4 cross-grid charts (with white, red, green, or red-green backgrounds) which were used with the fused cross cylinder (FCC) method. The final addition for a 40 cm working distance was determined for each subject by subjectively adjusting the tentative additions.

PURPOSE: To describe an excimer laser ablation architecture called the pseudoaccommodative cornea (PAC) that uses ocular aberrometry and aspheric ablation profiles to create a multifocal cornea.
METHODS: A descriptive article outlining the theory of the PAC algorithm.
RESULTS: The topographic changes induced by PAC produce corneal multifocality.
CONCLUSIONS: PAC-treated eyes have progressive concentric rings of center-distance and midperipheral-near power that enable functional vision at near, intermediate, and distance.

Currently, two single optic accommodative intraocular lenses are available for implantation. Both designs rely on the interaction of the ciliary muscle with the zonule and capsule to induce axial movement of the optic. This article reviews the historical development, laboratory data, and clinical findings relating to these interesting devices.

The TruVision Omni is a progressive addition lens (PAL) using a bipolar design and the Dirichlet principle to minimize optical aberrations. The design was evaluated by having each patient elect to keep one lens type after masked paired comparison of the TruVision Omni with one of four other PAL types: VIP, Varilux, New Super NoLine, and Gradal HS. Eighty-one screened presbyopic subjects were fitted with the Tangent Streak Bifocal (TSB) rigid gas permeable contact lens. Sixty subjects received lenses, and of this group, 42 (70%) have worn the lens successfully for 6 months or longer. Failures mainly resulted from discomfort and occasionally, reduced visual quality. Successful subjects were particularly pleased with their crisp vision at distance and near. The TSB may be the lens of choice for those presbyopic patients who require high definition visual quality at distance and near.
