OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of diabetes among Oregon prison inmates has increased by 50% in the last 5 years. The Healthy Food Access Project (HFAP) was implemented in the minimum-security facility at the Oregon Coffee Creek Correctional Facility to reduce the risk of chronic disease (including diabetes) and improve nutrition among female prison inmates. The intervention reduced the menu from 3,000 to 2,200 calories per day and provided nutrition education. We evaluated the effectiveness of HFAP on female inmates with diabetes on two outcomes: the effect of the reduced calorie menu on glycemic c

BACKGROUND: Studies on tobacco in the prison environment report high prevalence of use among detainees, but little data regarding staff are available. An observational study addressing tobacco control in German prisons was conducted in 2011. It involved multiple strands (quantitative and qualitative components) both among detainees and staff. This article presents quantitative results regarding staff.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study among prison employees in 16 different institutions in nine regions (Länder) in Germany. Tobacco use and second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure (primary outcomes) were a…

The aim of this study of prison health care staff in Prison Health Care and Nursing Units is twofold. The first one is to consider those aspects of the legal system applicable to them as government employees of the General State Administration at the service of Prisons, highlighting the peculiarities of the legal regulations that can be applied as a result of providing said service. The second, based on the general regulations on prison health contained in Organic Law 1/1979, of 26 September, General Penitentiary Law and the implementing regulations thereof, approved by Royal Decree 190/1966, …

Incarceration and community reentry for rural women reflect gendered processes. We draw upon in-depth semi-structured interviews and focus groups to examine the return of women prisoners to underserved rural communities, while attending to the perspectives of their closest social supporters. Our findings underscore the complexity of the reentry process for rural women and its particular impact on their families. We challenge dominant discourses of personal responsibility that detract from the structura violence and injustice shaping reentry experiences for women and their social supporters. We

PURPOSE: Suicidal behaviour is a common in prisoners, yet little is known about the factors that may protect against thoughts of ending one's life. The purpose of this paper is to specify and test a structural model to examine the relationship between three criminal social identity (CSI) dimensions (in-group affect, in-group ties, and cognitive centrality) and suicide ideation while controlling for period of confinement, age, criminal friends, and offense type (violent vs non-violent).
DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Participants were 415 male juvenile offenders incarcerated in prisons in Khyber…

Responding to a request by corrections agency management, we investigated coccidioidomycosis in prison employees in central California, a coccidioidomycosis-endemic area. We identified 103 cases of coccidioidomycosis that occurred over 4.5 years. As a result, we recommended training and other steps to reduce dust exposure among employees and thus potential exposure to Coccidioides.

In 2011, over 10.1 million people were held in prisons around the world. HIV prevalence is elevated in prison and this is due to the over representation of people who inject drugs (PWID). Yet HIV prevention programs for PWID are scarce in the prison setting. With a high proportion of drug users and few prevention programs, HIV transmission occurs and sometimes at an alarming rate. This commentary focuses primarily on drug users in prison; their risk behaviours and levels of infection. It also comments on the transmission of HIV including outbreaks and the efforts to prevent transmission within…

This article describes the epidemiology of varicella in one state prison in California during 2010 and 2011, control measures implemented, and associated costs. Eleven varicella cases were reported, of which nine were associated with two outbreaks. One outbreak consisted of three cases and the second consisted of six cases with two generations of spread. Among exposed inmates serologically tested, 98% (643/656) were varicella-zoster virus seropositive. The outbreaks resulted in > 1,000 inmates exposed, 444 staff exposures, and > $160,000 in costs. The authors documented the challenges and cost

PURPOSE: This study aimed at analyzing the causes of death of prisoners of war (POWs) during the Korean War (1950-1953) who fought for the Communist side (North Korea and the People's Republic of China). In 1998, the United States Department of Defense released new information about the prisoners including, 7,614 deaths of the POW during the Korean War. The data on the causes of death of the POWs during the Korean War provides valuable information on the both the public health and history of the conflict.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To analyze the causes of death of the POWs, we classified the cli

In this article, the authors review the skin conditions seen in a dermatology referral clinic for inmates in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice system at the University of Texas Medical Branch. A database search of dermatology visits over a 34-month period yielded 3,326 adult outpatient encounters for analysis. Psoriasis, actinic keratoses, and hair diseases were the most commonly encountered diagnoses. Dermatophytes were the most common infection, keloids the most common benign tumor, and pemphigus the most common autoimmune disease.

Individuals with a history of heroin dependence are overrepresented in American correctional facilities and 75% of inmates with a drug use disorder do not receive treatment during incarceration or after release. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) with opiate agonists, such as methadone or buprenorphine, constitutes standard of care; to guide planning for an expansion of drug treatment services in correctional facilities, a needs assessment was conducted at the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (DCR) of Puerto Rico (PR). The authors report on the research process, the findings that i

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are prevalent among female inmates. As the female state prison population continues to increase, describing the specific clinical and demographic characteristics of female prisoners remains of paramount importance to better define women's needs in the state prison system.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and patterns of current DSM-IV SUDs and explore whether particular demographic characteristics are more strongly associated with specific SUD categories.
METHODS: Data were derived from routine clinical assessments of 801 female inmates incar

In contemporary culture, soldiers held as prisoners-of-war (POWs) or as hostages are considered at significant risk of mental illness, in particular post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This assumption contrasts with the psychiatric orthodoxy of the First World War when it was concluded in both Britain and Germany that POWs were protected against 'war neurosis'. Although 'barbed wire disease' was identified during time of captivity, post-release effects were not recognized. The repatriation of 'protected' POWs in 1943 prompted a reassessment of the psychological impact of imprisonment when s

The current study explores bullying behaviours among adult male prisoners, examining its relationship with aggression attribution and impulsivity. Employed are two separate methods of analysis to determine how this may influence results. Participants were 102 prisoners. All completed a revised version of the Direct and Indirect Prisoner behaviour Checklist (DIPC-R), the Barratt Impulsivity Scale: Version II (BIS-12) and the Expressive Aggression Scale (EXPAGG). Analysis included categorical analysis with prisoners placed into one of four groups (pure bully, pure victim, bully/victim and not-in

OBJECTIVES: We examined the use of voluntary HIV testing among state prisoners in the North Carolina prison system.
METHODS: We calculated system-wide and facility-specific proportions and rates of adult inmates tested for HIV and estimated associations between testing status and inmate characteristics for prisoners in North Carolina.
RESULTS: Of the 54 016 inmates who entered prison between January 2004 and May 2006, 20 820 (38%) were tested for HIV; of those tested, 18 574 (89%) were tested at admission. Across the 8 intake prisons, more than 80% of inmates in both female facilities but le…
