Changing the frame: the impact of welfare narrative presentation on citizen choices about cow-calf separation.

Cow-calf separation, a highly controversial practice of the dairy industry, is a frequent topic of criticism amongst citizens. The divergence in opinion that exists between the public and farmers means that the continued occurrence of this practice on dairy farms results in friction in the producer-consumer relationship. Although research into the public's perceptions of this practice is emerging, investigations into how these change using different experimental methods are lacking. This study aimed to understand how welfare message framing influences UK citizens' decision-making on cow-calf s

A cross-sectional study of psychological morbidity in patients with acne, psoriasis and atopic dermatitis in specialist dermatology and general practices.

BACKGROUND: There is considerable evidence for an association of skin diseases with psychological morbidity. This relationship is best established for acne, psoriasis and atopic eczema. Previous studies have mostly been performed in specialist dermatological practice, and there is a lack of studies that include patients from general practice and a lack of controlled studies employing multivariate analysis. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine the relationship of acne, psoriasis and atopic eczema with psychological morbidities in patients recruited from general practice as well as speci

Optimal gynecologic and obstetric care for lesbians.

Lesbians, like other marginalized groups of women, underutilize health care services. Lesbians also present later for health care than heterosexual women. Lack of awareness of the health issues of lesbians by some health care professionals has produced lesbians' abstention from health services. After defining lesbianism, I discuss how homophobia is a public health problem. Health issues of lesbians and practical recommendations for providing optimal gynecologic and obstetric care are presented on the subjects of adolescence, sexual identity, behavior and practice, sexually transmitted diseases

Kids are all in the same storm but not in the same boat.

The present article reviews the scholarship and policy landscape about the state of child and youth well-being, as well as the scope of health/mental health and education inequities and the factors driving them. The research and policy literature are reviewed to provide exemplars of innovation in science, practice, prevention, policy, and public education that can advance progress and support optimism. Several guiding principles emerge that provide a foundation for improving well-being and equity for the next generation. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved).

Enhancing antibiotic stewardship by tackling "spurious" penicillin allergy.

Approximately 90-99% of patients with a label of penicillin allergy (PenA) are not allergic when comprehensively investigated. An inaccurate label of PenA has major public health implications-longer hospital stay, more frequent hospital admissions, greater use of fluoroquinolones, glycopeptides, cephalosporins and other expensive antibiotics resulting in significantly higher costs to the health service and predisposing to Clostridium difficile, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections and vancomycin-resistant enterococcus. We describe lessons learnt from recent studies regarding

Rethinking global health financing: from philanthropy to public good.

Global health financing has been dominated by philanthropic and donor-driven vertical programs over the past two decades. While this model has achieved major public health gains, it has also entrenched power asymmetries, fostered fragmentation, and undermined the sustainability and sovereignty of health systems in low- and middle-income countries. This perspective critiques the ethical and practical shortcomings of donor-driven approaches, including the marginalization of local ownership and democratic accountability. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the fragility of relying on voluntary, unpredi

Sports participation and physical health outcomes: the mediating roles of educational attainment and health-related behaviors.

Participation in sports has been associated with better physical health, but the educational and behavioral pathways through which this association operates have not been sufficiently investigated in public health research. Therefore, this study examined an integrated public health model from sports participation to physical health outcomes and the mediating effects of educational attainment and health-related behaviors. A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was used to investigate adults aged 18 years and older who had participated in organized or informal sporting activities. Data col

The association between intimate partner violence and breastfeeding practices in Cameroon: An analysis from demographic and health survey of 2018.

Intimate partner violence is a major public health concern around the world. While its degrading effects on maternal health are well documented, it is not clear establishing a link with child health outcomes, especially on breastfeeding practices. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the association between Intimate partner violence and breastfeeding practices in Cameroon using data from the 2018 demographic and health survey. Intimate partner violence is apprehended from its three dimensions (physical, emotional and sexual violence), and the two key breastfeeding practices are considered: ea

Training Community Health Workers to Support Families of Children With Disabilities: Lessons Learned and Practical Recommendations.

Community health workers provide important services to support public health outcomes, particularly in low-income and low-resource settings. This practice note describes the training and supervision of community health workers for a program that aims to provide community-based support to families of children with disabilities in Lusaka, Zambia. Faculty from the United States partnered with a local organization to develop a multiday experiential training for supervisors, who then provided this training to volunteers in the community. An evaluation of supervisors and community health workers rev

Communicating wastewater-based surveillance data to drive action.

As exemplified during the COVID-19 pandemic, wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) can deliver near real-time, population-level pathogen data to guide public health action. Its impact, however, hinges on timely, transparent, and context-specific communication to stakeholders, including health authorities, policymakers, scientists, clinicians, and the public. This review examines current WBS communication practices, identifies persistent challenges, and proposes strategies to enhance relevance. Key challenges include data complexity, lack of standardised communication frameworks, ethical and priv

Comparative risk perception of the monkeypox outbreak and the monkeypox vaccine.

Based on survey data collected from a nationally representative sample (N = 1,000), this study applies the psychometric paradigm to demonstrate that the American public perceived the monkeypox outbreak as a more dreaded risk than the monkeypox vaccine, but they also viewed the monkeypox vaccine as a more unknown risk. These perceptions influenced their overall risk judgment toward the monkeypox outbreak, support for public health responses and government assistance measures, and likelihood to get vaccinated. Contributing to research on risk perception, these findings indicate that the dread an
