The development of juntas contra el virus del papiloma humano: An HPV self-sampling intervention for underscreened Latinas.

BackgroundCervical cancer incidence remains higher among Latina women in the continental United States (US) and among women in Puerto Rico compared with non-Hispanic White women (NHW). Latinas remain more likely to die from cervical cancer than NHW women. Despite having one of the highest cervical cancer incidence rates, Latina women in the US are significantly less likely to undergo screening than NHW women. Multiple factors contribute to non-screening among Latinas including low access to healthcare services, racism/discrimination, and lack of culturally and linguistically adequate informati…

Is degree attainment associated with serious psychological distress among Black men aged 24 and older?

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the relationship between degree attainment and serious psychological distress (SPD) among Black men in the U … cation as a protective factor, supporting the 'minorities' diminished returns' hypothesis. Systemic racism and structural inequities may diminish the mental health benefits typically associated with higher education among Black men, highlighting the importance of developing culturally responsive mental health interventions.

Decolonising Healthcare Through Curricula: Integrating Indigenous Knowledges and Person-Centred Practice Through the Integrated Indigenous and Person-Centred Practice Theory and Framework.

AIM AND DESIGN: Indigenous knowledge systems offer enduring, relational and strengths-based frameworks for health and wellbeing. This theory and framework paper critically analyses how colonial legacies embedded in nursing curricula marginalise Indigenous knowledges and perpetuate inequities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We argue that current approaches, often fragmented, tokenistic and additive in nature, fail to address the structural and pedagogical roots of unsafe cultural practices and institutional racism in nursing education. RESULTS: In response, we present the In…

Ancestry-independent risk of venous thromboembolism in individuals with sickle cell trait vs factor V Leiden.

Sickle cell trait (SCT) is a risk factor for venous thromboembolism (VTE). Prior studies investigating the association between SCT and VTE have been performed nearly exclusively in Black populations. However, race-based research can contribute to systemic racism in medicine. We leveraged data from the 23andMe research cohort (4 184 082 participants) to calculate the ancestry-independent risk of VTE associated with SCT as well as comparative risk estimates for heterozygous factor V Leiden (FVL). Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using a meta-analysis of 3 genetic ancestry groups (European [n = …

Black Americans' Diminished Return of Educational Attainment on Tobacco Use in Baltimore City.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic status (SES) indicators such as educational attainment are fundamental factors affecting health. One mechanism through which education affects health is by reducing the likelihood of engaging in high-risk behaviors such as smoking. However, according to the marginalization-related diminished returns (MDRs) theory, the association between education and health may be weaker for marginalized populations such as Black than White, primarily due to racism and discrimination. However, little is known about the racial variations in the differential associations between educat…
