BACKGROUND: Cervical kyphotic deformity is a recognized complication following posterior cervical spine surgery, particularly after laminectomy. However, post-laminoplasty kyphosis remains an underreported entity. A case with a wide-open apex and a large cystlike periapical lesion in an adult is presented. The lesion formed as a result of necrosis from trauma to a maxillary central incisor 12 years ago. After nonsurgical endodontic treatment with calcium hydroxide paste and a calcium hydroxide-containing root canal sealer, apical closure and significant healing of the periapical lesion within 15 months were observed. This report suggests that even large periapical lesions (likely cystic) could respond favorably to nonsurgical treatment.

Measurement of alkaline phosphatase enzymatic activity is the most commonly used serum marker to assess bone formation. In this present study serum alkaline phosphatase, calcium, and phosphate were measured in 12 patients where natural coral was implanted in surgical bony defects. Blood samples were obtained preoperatively which served as control, and at 1, 7, 15, and 30 days. No statistically significant increase in serum alkaline phosphatase, calcium, and phosphate was observed.

Following several case reports of cyst development after endodontic treatment of decidous teeth, the osseous response to formaldehyde- or phenol-based materials was evaluated by a standardized radiographic technique. Endodontic medicaments contained in Teflon carriers were implanted between feline deciduous canine and molar teeth and the permanent successional teeth. Persistent radiolucency surrounding formocresol implants and sequestration of Kri-paste implants were noted in contrast to apparent bony healing around the zinc oxide-eugenol controls and those implants containing glutaraldehyde.

INTRODUCTION: The inability to distinguish periapical cysts from granulomas before performing root canal treatment leads to uncertainty in treatment outcomes because cysts have lower healing rates. Searching for differential expression of molecules within cysts or granulomas could provide information with regard to the identity of the lesion or suggest mechanistic differences that may form the basis for future therapeutic intervention.
