Delaying the onset of treadmill exercise following peripheral nerve injury has different effects on axon regeneration and motoneuron synaptic plasticity.

Transection of a peripheral nerve results in withdrawal of synapses from motoneurons. Some of the withdrawn synapses are restored spontaneously, but those containing the vesicular glutamate transporter 1 (VGLUT1), and arising mainly from primary afferent neurons, are withdrawn permanently. If animals are exercised immediately after nerve injury, regeneration of the damaged axons is enhanced and no withdrawal of synapses from injured motoneurons can be detected. We investigated whether delaying the onset of exercise until after synapse withdrawal had occurred would yield similar results. In Lew

Influence of stimulation of nasal afferents on expiration reflex evoked from vocal folds.

Cough and sneezing are upregulated during the upper airway diseases, most likely to enhance airway defense. The aim of this study was to assess the expiration reflex (ER), another expulsive defensive airway reflex, during allergic rhinitis (AR) and intranasal (i.n.) capsaicin challenge. Thirty male guinea pigs, sensitized to ovalbumin were used in the study. They were divided into 3 groups of 10 animals each: AR group (i.n. ovalbumin), capsaicin group (i.n. capsaicin 50 microM, 15 microl), and controls without any challenge. The animals were anesthetized with urethane (1.1 mg/kg) and allowed t

Precise cannulation of the foramen ovale in trigeminal neuralgia complicating osteogenesis imperfecta with basilar invagination: technical case report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Trigeminal neuralgia is a rare feature of basilar invagination, which is itself a complication of osteochondrodysplastic disorders. Microvascular decompression is an unattractive option in medically refractory cases. The conventional percutaneous approach to the trigeminal ganglion is anatomically impossible because the foramen ovale points inferiorly and posteromedially. We report a new technique for image-guided trigeminal injection in a patient with basilar invagination complicating osteogenesis imperfecta. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old woman with osteogene

Nasolacrimal stimulation of aqueous tear production.

PURPOSE: Aqueous tear production decreases after anesthetizing the ocular surface. Loss of the nasolacrimal reflex is a risk factor for neurotrophic keratopathy and keratoconjunctivitis sicca. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of nasal mucosal anesthesia on aqueous tear production. METHODS: Eleven healthy human volunteers with a normal ocular surface and Schirmer I tear-test scores > 10 mm participated in this study. Schirmer I values were obtained daily for 3 days to establish a normal baseline. On a separate day, the right nasal mucosa was anesthetized with aerosolized 10

Case of recurrent, reversible, sudden sensorineural hearing loss in a child.

This paper describes audiologic, electrophysiologic, and medical test results for a now 10-year-old girl who has had 45 episodes of reversible, sudden sensorineural hearing loss over the last 8 years. Episodes have lasted from 6 to 72 hours and often have been accompanied by a mild illness. Acoustic immittance measures have been consistent with normal middle-ear function with the exception of absent ipsilateral and contralateral acoustic reflexes. Mechanically evoked perioral reflex activity was markedly asymmetric following lower lip stimulation. The asymmetry of R1 activation between right a

Effects of Edaravone on Recovery of the Facial Nerve After Crush Injury: Original Study-Brief Clinical.

In traumatic peripheral facial nerve paralysis, the risk of permanent sequelae remains high despite current surgical and medical treatments. Edaravone is a free radical scavenger with antioxidant and antiapoptotic properties; however, its efficacy in facial nerve injury has not yet been established. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of edaravone on facial nerve recovery following crush injury in a rat model. Thirty rats were randomly assigned to 3 groups (n=10 per group): group 1 (saline-treated control), group 2 (methylprednisolone-treated), and group 3 (edaravone-treated). Facial paral

A case of Miller Fisher syndrome with delayed onset peripheral facial nerve palsy after COVID-19 vaccination: a case report.

BACKGROUND: To prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection, various vaccines have been developed and used in a large number of people worldwide. One of the most commonly used vaccines is the mRNA vaccine developed by Moderna. Although several studies have shown this vaccine to be safe, the full extent of its side effects has not yet been known. Miller-Fisher syndrome (MFS) is a rare condition that manifests ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and loss of tendon reflexes. It is a subtype of Guillain-Barré syndrome and an immune-mediated disease related to serum IgG anti-G

Transcranial direct current stimulation of the frontal-parietal-temporal brain areas reduces cigarette consumption in abstinent heroin users.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been demonstrated to modulate neural activity and related brain functions. In clinical studies, tDCS has been shown to reduce craving in various substance use disorders including cocaine, heroin and nicotine. Our previous report suggested that cathodal tDCS on the frontal-parietal-temporal (FPT) brain areas reduced cigarette consumption in moderate smokers. However, whether it is effective in smokers with history of drug use is unknown. This study investigated the effects of bilateral FPT areas cathodal tDCS on smokers with history of heroin u

Fourth ventricle neurocysticercosis: Rigid endoscopic management. Description of direct transcerebellar approach.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopy has gained a crucial role in high specialty neurosurgery during the last decades. At present, there are well-defined flexible neuroendoscopic procedures to treat ventricular and subarachnoid space pathologies. Neurocysticercosis is recognized as a common cause of neurologic disease in developing countries and the United States. Surgical intervention, especially cerebrospinal fluid diversion, is the key for management of hydrocephalus. In 2002, a consensus suggested that ventricular forms should be treated with endoscopy as the first option. CASE DESCRIPTION: Here, we pre

Changes in vagal afferent drive alter tracheobronchial coughing in anesthetized cats.

Unilateral cooling of the vagus nerve (<5°C, blocking mainly conductivity of myelinated fibers) and unilateral vagotomy were employed to reduce cough afferent drive in order to evaluate the effects of these interventions on the temporal features of the cough reflex. Twenty pentobarbitone anesthetized, spontaneously breathing cats were used. Cough was induced by mechanical stimulation of the tracheobronchial airways. The number of coughs during vagal cooling was significantly decreased (p<0.001). Inspiratory cough efforts were reduced by approximately 30% (p<0.001) and expiratory motor drive by

Anesthetics and automaticity of dominant and latent pacemakers in chronically instrumented dogs. I. Methodology, conscious state, and halothane anesthesia: comparison with and without muscarinic blockade during exposure to epinephrine.

BACKGROUND: Supraventricular dysrhythmias are common during anesthesia, but have been incompletely investigated. Mechanisms may involve altered automaticity of subsidiary pacemakers and participation of vagal reflexes. The following hypotheses were tested: (1) shifts from the sinoatrial (SA) node to subsidiary pacemakers require intact vagal reflexes and (2) halothane sensitizes the heart to epinephrine-induced atrial pacemaker shifts. METHODS: Epicardial electrodes were implanted in eight dogs on both atrial appendages, the right ventricle, along the sulcus terminalis, and at the His bundle.
