BACKGROUND: Immunonutrition examines how diet influences immune development. Complementary feeding represents a critical window for long-term health. We aimed to map evidence linking complementary feeding to immune outcomes, allergy, infection, and growth in infants and toddlers (≤ 3 years). We conducted a scoping review and evidence-gap mapping, following PRISMA-ScR. MEDLINE and Epistemonikos were searched from inception to November 2024. Concepts included diet diversity/patterns, feeding practices/models, and timing of allergen introduction, timing of complementary feeding, macronutrients, m

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) drives both malignant and benign tumours. Current prophylactic vaccines are type-restricted, not optimised for T-cell induction, and lack therapeutic efficacy. Although T-cells are critical for both preventing and clearing HPV infection, experimentally validated HPV T-cell epitopes remain fragmented across the literature, limiting systematic evaluation of cellular immune targets.
METHODS: We curated experimentally validated HPV T-cell epitopes from the Immune Epitope Database (IEDB). Epitopes were mapped across HPV proteins and genotypes, and analysed fo

This paper describes the chemical synthesis and crystal molecular conformation of a non-chiral beta-Ala containing model peptide Boc-beta-Ala-Acc5-OCH3. The analysis revealed the existence of two crystallographically independent molecules A and B, in the asymmetric unit. Unexpectedly, while the magnitudes of the backbone torsion angles in both molecules are remarkably similar, the signs of the corresponding torsion angles are reverse therefore, inclining us to suggest the existence of non-superimposable stereogeometrical features in a non-chiral one-component beta-Ala model system. The critica

Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is an important oilseed crop with considerable agronomic potential, widely cultivated across tropical and subtropical regions. Despite its substantial economic value, genomic research in sesame has progressed more slowly than in major staple crops. The advent of high-throughput single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers has markedly advanced sesame breeding by enabling the development of dense genetic linkage maps, genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and marker-assisted selection (MAS). This chapter presents detailed protocols for SNP discovery and validation

Brain abscess developing at the site of intracerebral hemorrhage has rarely been reported. We report herein a case of brain abscess following intracerebral hemorrhage that mimicked a chronic encapsulated intracerebral hematoma. An 80-year-old man presented with right hemiparesis caused by a left frontoparietal subcortical intracerebral hemorrhage, which was managed conservatively. During hospitalization, progressive motor aphasia developed. Two weeks after admission, magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated worsening perihematomal edema and ring enhancement along the hematoma margin. Diffusion-

This literature review evaluates any possible links between primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and caloric restriction (CR), body mass index (BMI), and exercise, aiming to map the extent of the literature. Its primary objective is to recognise the nature and breadth of research evidence, identify possible gaps in these topics and develop future studies. The databases searched were MEDLINE (PudMed), Scopus and ScienceDirect, in April 2023 for articles published in English, with no date restriction. A total of 447 search results were retrieved. Of these, 73 were related to CR, 249 to BMI, and 12

PURPOSE: To determine the chromosomal location and to identify the gene causing a type of retinitis punctata albescens, called Bothnia dystrophy, found in a restricted geographic area in northern Sweden.
METHODS: Twenty patients from seven families originating from a restricted geographic area in northern Sweden were clinically examined. Microsatellite markers were analyzed in all affected and unaffected family members. Direct genomic sequencing of the gene encoding cellular retinaldehyde-binding protein was performed after the linkage analysis had been completed.
RESULTS: Affected individua

Genetic haemochromatosis (HFE) is a frequent and potentially fatal disease. Early phlebotomies may prevent complications. The recessive gene for HFE is unknown but closely linked to the HLA-A locus. No direct test for homozygosity for HFE is currently available, apart from HLA typing within the family of a patient with confirmed HFE. During a reverse genetic approach to identify the gene, we found three anonymous genomic probes (P3, P5, and I.82) derived from previously cloned YACs and physically mapped in the HLA class I region. P3 and P5 probes recognise 3 loci (P3A, P3B, P5) and I.82 one lo

The detection of carriers of the X-linked disorder hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is problematic because of random X-inactivation; the diagnosis was previously based on the observation of subtle defects in ectodermal structures in at-risk females. Linkage studies have recently mapped hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia to the region Xq11-q21.1. We assessed the improvement in carrier detection by the method of linkage analysis, in which restriction fragment length polymorphisms were used as markers, in 72 at-risk female members of 29 families. Carriers analyses were based on pedigree informati

The genomic evaluation of multiple myeloma in routine diagnostics involves isolating plasma cells expressing CD138, usually followed by fluorescence in situ hybridization analyses. However, cell sorting often yields a limited number of cells, restricting the number of probes that can be used and limiting the analysis to a few markers required for minimal prognostic classification. Optical genome mapping is a high-resolution technology capable of identifying structural variants and copy number variations across the entire genome; however, it currently requires 1 million cells. To overcome this

Bioluminescence tomography (BLT) is a promising pre-clinical imaging technique for a wide variety of biomedical applications, which can non-invasively reveal functional activities inside living animal bodies through the detection of visible or near-infrared light produced by bioluminescent reactions. Recently, reconstruction approaches based on deep learning have shown great potential in optical tomography modalities. However, these reports only generate data with stationary patterns of constant target number, shape, and size. The neural networks trained by these data sets are difficult to rec

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a growing public health problem with increasing incidence and expanding risk areas. Improved prevention requires better understanding of the spatial distribution and ecological determinants of TBE transmission. However, a TBE risk map at sub-district level is still missing for Germany. We investigated the distribution and geo-spatial characteristics of 567 self-reported places of probable TBE infection (POI) from 359 cases notified in 2018-2020 in the study area of Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg, compared to 41 confirmed TBE foci and 1701 random comparator plac

Rapid and quantitative molecular diagnostics in the field, at home, and at remote clinics is essential for evidence-based disease management, control, and prevention. Conventional molecular diagnostics requires extensive sample preparation, relatively sophisticated instruments, and trained personnel, restricting its use to centralized laboratories. To overcome these limitations, we designed a simple, inexpensive, hand-held, smartphone-based mobile detection platform, dubbed "smart-connected cup" (SCC), for rapid, connected, and quantitative molecular diagnostics. Our platform combines biolumin

Previous Resting-State Functional Connectivity (RSFC) studies have shown several functional alterations in adults with or recovered from long Anorexia Nervosa (AN). The aim of this paper was to investigate whole brain RSFC in adolescents with AN in the earliest stages, less than 6 months, of the disorder. Sixteen drug-naïve outpatient female adolescents with AN-restrictive type (AN-r) (mean age: 15,8; SD 1,7) were compared to 16 age-matched healthy female (mean age: 16,3; SD 1,4). Relevant resting state networks (RSNs) were identified using independent component analysis (ICA) from functional

Reducing geographic barriers to tuberculosis (TB) care is a priority in high-burden countries where patients frequently initiate, but do not complete, the multi-day TB evaluation process. Using routine cross-sectional study from six primary-health clinics in rural Uganda from 2009 to 2012, we explored whether geographic barriers affect completion of TB evaluation among adults with unexplained chronic cough. We measured distance from home parish to health center and calculated individual travel time using a geographic information systems technique incorporating roads, land cover, and slope, and

BACKGROUND: Lassa fever is a viral haemorrhagic illness responsible for disease outbreaks across West Africa. It is a zoonosis, with the primary reservoir species identified as the Natal multimammate mouse, Mastomys natalensis. The host is distributed across sub-Saharan Africa while the virus' range appears to be restricted to West Africa. The majority of infections result from interactions between the animal reservoir and human populations, although secondary transmission between humans can occur, particularly in hospital settings.
METHODS: Using a species distribution model, the locations o

Sleep deprivation (SD) leads to a suite of cognitive and behavioral impairments, and yet the molecular consequences of SD in the brain are poorly understood. Using a systematic immediate-early gene (IEG) mapping to detect neuronal activation, the consequences of SD were mapped primarily to forebrain regions. SD was found to both induce and suppress IEG expression (and thus neuronal activity) in subregions of neocortex, striatum, and other brain regions. Laser microdissection and cDNA microarrays were used to identify the molecular consequences of SD in seven brain regions. In situ hybridizatio

Metal ion binding domains are found in proteins that mediate transport, buffering or detoxification of metal ions. The objective of the study is to design and analyze metal binding motifs against the genes involved in phytoremediation. This is being done on the basis of certain pre-requisite amino-acid residues known to bind metal ions/metal complexes in medicinal and aromatic plants (MAP's). Earlier work on MAP's have shown that heavy metals accumulated by aromatic and medicinal plants do not appear in the essential oil and that some of these species are able to grow in metal contaminated sit
