PURPOSE: To compare retinal microvascular function in healthy individuals with and without a positive family history (FH) of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
METHODS: Retinal vessel reactivity was assessed by means of dynamic retinal vessel analysis in 38 healthy subjects aged between 30 and 66 years with a positive FH of CVD and 37 age- and gender-matched control subjects. Other assessments included blood pressure (BP) profiles, blood glucose and lipid metabolism markers, Framingham risk scores (FRS), carotid intima-media thickness (c-IMT) and brachial flow-mediated dilation (FMD).

We present a patient with isolated angiomatosis retinae, in whom ruthenium irradiation was administered for treatment of a secondary serous retinal detachment. Prior to therapy, we measured an increased vessel diameter. Following treatment, decreasing venous vessel diameter was documented three-dimensionally utilizing laser scanning tomography. The changes in vessel height (87%) exceeded the changes in width (49%). Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common chronic disease of the central nervous system in Germany. In 80 % of patients early stages of the disease are characterized by a clinically isolated episodic course. Ocular manifestations are common and mostly affect the optic nerve or the uvea and in some cases the retinal vessels. Here we report on a bilateral retinal vasculitis as the first manifestation of MS in a 27-year-old patient. All symptoms resolved after high dose steroid treatment; however, intensive follow-up is crucial due to potential occlusive, ischemic complications.

Haemolytic-uraemic syndrome is characterized by thrombotic microangiopathy of the glomeruli and smaller arterial vessels of the kidney. A 4-year-old boy with right retinal hemorrhage, mental retardation, and multiple minor anomalies was referred to our hospital. Computed tomography scanning revealed a cystic brain tumor at the vermis. Angiography showed stenosis of both internal carotid arteries at the supraclinoid portion and the Moyamoya vessels. The right ophthalmic artery was dilated as wide as the internal carotid artery. Stenosis of the basilar artery was also observed. Collateral circulation via the posterior inferior cerebellar artery and Moyamoya vessels in the area of the posterior cerebral artery was observed.
