Treating suicidality remotely (TREASURE): study protocol for a remote randomized controlled trial comparing personalized cognitive behavioral therapy for suicide prevention with a guided self-help course in adolescents and adults.

BACKGROUND: Practical and psychological barriers make it difficult for people with Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors (STBs) to obtain professional help. Remote interventions have the potential to overcome many of these barriers, but the remote interventions to date have produced small or short-lived effects and only reduced suicidal thoughts, not behaviors. AIMS: This study therefore aims to evaluate the effectiveness of remotely delivered brief cognitive behavioral therapy for suicide prevention (BCBT) in preventing suicide attempts in a fully remote randomized controlled trial, in which it wi

Mediating Factors and Demographic Disparities Associated With Disordered Eating in University Students During the Era of COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: Disordered eating (DE) increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, and a recent systematic review identified marginalised identity, psychological wellbeing, loneliness, stress, higher body mass index (BMI), and internalised weight bias (IWB) contributing to pandemic-era DE. The present study aimed to extend these findings by evaluating hypothesised contributors to pandemic-era DE while evaluating pandemic era stressors among a single, more diverse sample of university students. METHOD: A diverse cohort of first-year university students (N = 1289, 43.4% White, 24.2% LGBTQ+) were surveye

Perceived unmet need for mental health care for Canadians with co-occurring mental and substance use disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Previous analyses demonstrated an elevated occurrence of perceived unmet need for mental health care among persons with co-occurring mental and substance use disorders in comparison with those with either disorder. This study built on previous work to examine these associations and underlying reasons in more detail. METHODS: Secondary data analyses were performed on a subset of respondents to the 2002 Canadian Community Health Survey (unweighted N=4,052). Diagnostic algorithms classified respondents by past-year substance dependence and selected mood and anxiety disorders. Logistic

Experienced economic segregation and associated mental health inequalities across urbanicity.

The global mental health burden is rising, with economic segregation as a key social determinant contributing to mental health and its inequalities. However, most studies rely on residential-based segregation measures failing to capture the actual segregation individuals experience through daily mobility and activities. Using a large-scale mobility dataset across the contiguous United States, we quantify mobility-based economic segregation and examine its associations with mental health outcomes across income groups and urbanicity levels. We find that individuals in the lowest and highest inco

Association analysis of suicide risk assessed with Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interviews' Suicidality Module in adolescents with non suicidal self injury disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Many adolescents with non suicidal self injury disorder have suicidal ideation. However, the specific characteristics of adolescents with NSSI-D that contribute to high suicide risk remain unclear. This study observes the association between depressive and anxiety symptoms and suicide risk among adolescents with non suicidal self injury disorder, and explores the mechanism underlying the high risk of suicide in this population. METHOD: Adolescents with non suicidal self injury disorder and their parents from a psychiatric outpatient clinic were selected to conduct paper questionnai

A systematic review of self-management interventions for children and youth with physical disabilities.

PURPOSE: Evidence shows that effective self-management behaviors have the potential to improve health outcomes, quality of life, self-efficacy and reduce morbidity, emergency visits and costs of care. A better understanding of self-management interventions (i.e. programs that help with managing symptoms, treatment, physical and psychological consequences) is needed to achieve a positive impact on health because most children with a disability now live well into adulthood. METHOD: A systematic review of self-management interventions for school age youth with physical disabilities was undertake

Evaluating self-assistance during functional reach with a passive hydrostatic exoskeleton under artificial impairment.

BACKGROUND: Practicing functional upper-extremity tasks with manual self-assistance may promote motor recovery and restore voluntary control to an impaired limb, reducing reliance on external aid. However, most evidence comes from studies involving tasks with limited coordinative demands. In a functional task like reaching for and lifting an object, learning to generate coordinated assistive forces with an external device may pose bilateral sensorimotor challenges that limit motor learning in the impaired limb. To address this question, we developed a passive hydrostatic exoskeleton (hEXO) tha

Self-harm in university students: A comparative analysis of data from the Multicentre Study of Self-harm in England.

BACKGROUND: Increases in poor mental health and suicide have been identified among university students in the UK. However, little is known about self-harm in this group. AIMS: To describe and identify care needs of university aged-students who self-harm via comparisons with an age-equivalent non-student group who self-harm. METHODS: Observational cohort data from The Multicentre Study of Self-harm in England were used to investigate students aged 18 to 24 years who presented to emergency departments for self-harm, 2003 to 2016. Data were collected via clinician reports and medical records fr

Autism and Self-Esteem: A Systematic Review Quantifying Differences Between Autistic and Non-Autistic Adolescents and Investigating Associations With Mental Health Difficulties.

Autistic individuals are at increased risk of developing mental health difficulties. Self-esteem has been found to be a significant indicator of mental health in the general population yet remains underexplored in autistic adolescents. This review aimed to explore rates of low self-esteem in autistic versus non-autistic adolescents (10-19 years of age) and examine the relationship between self-esteem and mental health symptomatology. A comprehensive literature search was conducted across four databases to identify relevant studies published until March 2025. The systematic review included 30 s

Mining Patterns Associated With Mobility Outcomes in Home Healthcare.

BACKGROUND: Mobility is critical for self-management. Understanding factors associated with improvement in mobility during home healthcare can help nurses tailor interventions to improve mobility outcomes and keep patients safely at home. OBJECTIVES: The aims were to (a) identify patient and support system factors associated with mobility improvement during home care, (b) evaluate consistency of factors across groups defined by mobility status at the start of home care, and (c) identify patterns of factors associated with improvement and no improvement in mobility within each group. METHODS:

Primary Care Autism Assessment Training Program Pilot Trial.

Pediatric primary care practitioners (PCPs) are not typically trained to conduct autism assessments, contributing to delayed autism diagnosis in the United States. From February to September 2024, PCPs in Portland, Oregon, were trained to conduct standardized autism assessments with young children, based on similar U.S.-based training models. This training consisted of an asynchronous online autism course sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics; a 2-day, in-person workshop on diagnostic assessment; and eight posttraining community learning sessions. Twenty-four PCPs were trained to con

Greater dietary variety is associated with lower food anxiety at discharge from intensive eating disorder treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Food anxiety and limited dietary variety often persist after intensive treatment for eating disorders (EDs) and may contribute to relapse. Prior studies demonstrate decreased meal-related anxiety with residential or inpatient treatment, but less is known about changes in dietary variety and anxiety associated with specific foods. The current study assessed change in food anxiety and dietary variety in inpatients with EDs (anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa) in relation to discharge outcomes from meal-based behavioral treatment. METHOD: Patients (N = 128) admitted to a specialized

"It's Finding the Time to Prioritize Ourselves": Using the Theory of Planned Behavior to Explore Young Black Women's Attitudes, Norms, and Beliefs Toward Mental Health Care.

Across the United States, Black women are likely to have unmet mental health needs, with greater personal, social, and structural barriers to mental health treatment compared to other groups. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) may help to conceptualize young Black women’s mental health beliefs and help-seeking behaviors. The current study aimed to use the TPB framework and a concurrent mixed methods approach to explore behavioral, normative, and control beliefs toward seeking mental health care among a sample of young Black women from community settings. The sample consisted of 33 Black wome
