Clear cell melanoma is a rare clear cell malignancy. Accurate diagnosis of clear cell melanoma requires integration of immunohistochemical and morphologic findings, with molecular studies to rule out clear cell sarcoma. The differential diagnosis includes melanoma, carcinoma, perivascular epithelioid cell tumor, and epidermotropic clear cell sarcoma. We use a case of a lesion on the helix of an 86-year-old man as an example. Histologic examination revealed an ulcerated clear cell malignant tumor. Tumor cell cytoplasm contained periodic acid-Schiff-positive, diastase-sensitive glycogen. Tumor c

We describe the clinical, gross and microscopic features of undifferentiated uterine stromal sarcoma associated with osteoclast-like giant cells. A case of low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma is already described in association with osteoclast-like giant cells; however, the current case differs in that the tumor was a high grade and did not show any evidence of smooth muscle or epithelioid differentiation and was shown to be strongly positive for CD10 and focally for WT-1 and Inhibin supporting an endometrial stromal origin. The associated osteoclast-like giant cells were abundant, evenly di

Primary central nervous system atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors mostly occur during early childhood and are almost invariably fatal. These tumors show similar histological and radiological features to primitive neuroectodermal tumor, medulloblastoma and choroid plexus carcinoma, but present different biological behaviors. We present the case of an 18 year-old man who presented headache, vomiting and ataxia. CT-scan and MRI revealed a posterior fossa tumor. A gross total resection was performed. An intraoperative study showed papillary-like tumors with large cells and mitotic features. Histolo

Pleural solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are uncommon tumors. Although these tumors have been well characterized, malignant pleural SFTs with liposarcomatous differentiation have not been reported. We report an unusual malignant pleural SFT intermixed with foci of well-differentiated liposarcoma. The patient was a 66-year-old, white man with a large, solid right pleural mass that measured 13.5 x 10.3 x 8.5 cm. The tumor was composed of spindle-shaped and plump cells embedded in dense collagenous stroma. The tumor cells were arranged in interlacing fascicles or in a patternless pattern. Marked nu

The tumor microenvironment (TME) is an intricate system within solid neoplasms. In this review, we aim to provide an updated insight into the TME with a focus on the effects of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) on its various components and the use of TNF-α to improve the efficiency of drug delivery. The TME comprises the supporting structure of the tumor, such as its extracellular matrix and vasculature. In addition to cancer cells and cancer stem cells, the TME contains various other cell types, including pericytes, tumor-associated fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, and immune cells. These cel

A 28-year-old female presented with a huge intra-abdominal mass. Initially a mesenteric mass was diagnosed, but her tumor was found to be a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Laparotomy was performed. The mass was resected en bloc with clear surgical margins in January 2007. It was found to be 20 × 18 × 16 cm. In order to remove the tumor, the left half of transverse colon with its mesocolon, spleen, body and tail of pancreas, and a part of the small intestine had to be removed. The mass was tightly attached to these viscera. The tumor was surgically removed three years ago. The pathology

Intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) is a rare subtype of benign smooth muscle tumor that can exhibit malignant-like biological behavior. Originating in the uterus, IVL grows in mass-like formations within small veins and can extend into the inferior vena cava (IVC), right atrium, and pulmonary arteries. Due to the potential for life-threatening consequences when IVL invades the heart and pulmonary arteries, early diagnosis and radical resection through a multidisciplinary approach are crucial. This report presents a case of uterine intravenous leiomyomatosis involving the IVC and right atrium, co…

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare disease of unknown etiology that occurs almost exclusively in women, primarily of reproductive age. This disease is characterized by smooth muscle cell proliferation, most commonly in the lungs. However, cases of extrapulmonary LAM have been reported, such as in the lymph nodes of mediastinum, abdominal cavity, and retroperitoneum. The clinical manifestations of pelvic lymph node LAM are subtle manifesting as symptoms of compression due to a large tumor mass but more often diagnosed incidentally in lymph node specimens removed during gynecologic oncolog

INTRODUCTION: Diffuse esophageal leiomyomatosis is a rare esophageal tumor characterized by circumferential thickening of smooth muscle layers of the entire esophagus. CLINICAL CASE: Herein, we describe the case of a 19-year-old girl, who presented with a history of long-standing dysphagia. On evaluation she was found to have diffuse esophageal leiomyomatosis and was managed successfully by thoracoscopy-assisted esophagectomy with intra-nodal indocyanine green injection.
DISCUSSION: In this report, we discuss the pre-operative workup and our surgical approach to managing this rare entity. We

We present a unique case of a 6 cm, incidental, ureteral myopericytoma which was initially believed to be an ovarian tumor with mass effect, causing hydroureteronephrosis. A 75-year-old woman presented with a three-month history of postprandial cramps and heartburn. A right distal ureterectomy with en-bloc resection of the mass was performed. Histologically, a well-circumscribed, cellular proliferation of uniform, cytologically bland, spindle cells was identified that had a multilayered, concentric growth pattern around numerous blood vessels. Immunohistochemically, the spindle lesional cells

Angioleiomyoma is a benign soft tissue tumor originating from vascular smooth muscle. We report a case of a 20-year-old student who presented with pain in the right shoulder of 4 years duration. Shoulder movements were pain-free throughout the range of motion except resisted external rotation. Magnetic resonance imaging visualized a well-circumscribed lesion over the infraspinatus tendon. The lesion was surgically removed and sent for histopathological analysis. Morphology and immunohistochemistry results were suggestive of angioleiomyoma. The most common location for such a lesion is the lowe

Leiomyoma is a smooth muscle tumor which rarely turns into malignancy. This is an unusual case report which presents leiomyoma on gingiva with osseous involvement. This case highlights the importance of histopathological examination for the proper diagnosis of any gingival growth. A 28-year-old female patient reported with localized gingival enlargement. The surgical excision was conducted and excised tissue was sent for histopathological examination. On the basis of clinical and histopathological examination, the diagnosis of leiomyoma was made. Leiomyoma reported low recurrence rate in previ…

Leiomyosarcomas arising from the wall of blood vessels are rare and aggressive neoplasm. We report a case of a previously healthy 66-year-old woman who presented with intermittent abdominal pain, progressive constipation, and weight loss. Abdominal computed tomography showed a 12 cm solid heterogeneous tumor in the tail of the pancreas. The patient subsequently underwent surgical resection of the pancreatic mass. Surprisingly, histological and immunohistochemical analyses revealed leiomyosarcoma arising from the smooth muscle of the splenic vein. After surgery, she received adjuvant chemothera

BACKGROUND: Myoepitheliomas of salivary glands are generally encapsulated, slowly growing asymptomic solid masses in which more than 50% are seen in the parotid gland. Cystic myoepitheliomas are very rare.
CASE REPORT: We present an 80-year-old man with a cystic mass in the right parotid gland that had undergone superficial parotidectomy. In gross examination, a mass containing a large cyst was observed. Microscopically, tumor consisted of clear cells and small cuboidal cells, forming tubules in a hyalinized stroma. Immunohistochemically, clear cells were immunoreactive for S100 and smooth mu

Endoscopic examination of a 39-year-old woman revealed a flat-elevated submucosal tumor (SMT) in the upper third area of the stomach and a IIc lesion in the anterior wall of the lower third of the stomach. Endoscopic ultrasonography findings suggested an aberrant pancreas. Both lesions were resected by distal gastrectomy. Histological examination of the SMT revealed the dilated glands with cyst formation and proliferation of smooth muscle bundles in the submucosal layer, and it was diagnosed as a gastric hamartomatous inverted polyp. The IIc lesion was a signet ring cell carcinoma. Cases of ga

Collagenous fibroma (desmoplastic fibroblastoma) is an extremely rare benign soft tissue tumor of fibroblastic origin. The majority of reported cases have been located in the deep subcutis, fascia, aponeurosis, or skeletal muscle of the extremities, limb girdles, or head and neck regions. There has been no mention of underlying diseases in patients who developed this tumor. We here report an additional three cases of superficial collagenous fibroma, one of which was a dermal lesion occurring in the abdomen of a 26-year-old male patient with a 5-year history of pemphigus vulgaris prior to devel

Diffuse esophageal leiomyomatosis is a rare esophageal tumor characterized by circumferential thickening of smooth muscle layers. Diffuse esophageal leiomyomatosis can be associated with Alport's syndrome and therefore diagnosed by skin biopsy. Alport syndrome is a hereditary disease usually defined by the association of glomerular nephropathy and perceptual deafness. Here we describe the management of a young women with a diffuse esophageal leiomyomatosis and a past history of uterine leiomyoma. The surgical treatment depends on the esophageal extent of the disease. Association between diffus

Angioleiomyoma (AL) is a very rare benign tumor that originates from smooth muscle cells and has thick walled vessels. It may be found throughout the body but more frequently occurs in the lower extremities and rarely develops in the head and other parts of the body. This paper presents a case report of giant AL detected in a 33-year-old woman who complained of severe anemia, menorrhagia, and palpable lower abdominal mass. The patient underwent myomectomy and was diagnosed with AL based on the pathological report of mass. The effective treatment for AL is either simple hysterectomy or angiomyo

Uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a highly metastatic smooth muscle neoplasm for which calponin h1 is suspected to have a biological role as a tumor-suppressor. We earlier reported that LMP2-null mice spontaneously develop uterine LMS through malignant transformation of the myometrium, thus implicating this protein as an anti-tumorigenic candidate as well. In the present study, we show that LMP2 may negatively regulate LMS independently of its role in the proteasome. Moreover, several lines of evidence indicate that although calponin h1 does not directly influence tumorigenesis, it clearly affec
