Social mobilisation, drug coverage and compliance and adverse reactions in a Mass Drug Administration (MDA) Programme for the Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: In Sri Lanka filariasis is endemic in Southern, Western and North Western provinces covering eight districts designated as implementation units in the Programme for the Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis (PELF). Despite control activities over sixty years including multidose diethylcarbamazine, 6 mg/kg treatment microfilaria rates had persisted at low levels. Following systematic social mobilisation the first MDA with DEC albendazole combination was conducted in 2002. METHODS: We investigated the extent social mobilisation had reached the people, their drug compliance and adverse

Altered brain network organization in adults with Asperger's syndrome: decreased connectome transitivity and assortativity with increased global efficiency.

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that persists into adulthood with both social and cognitive disturbances. Asperger's syndrome (AS) was a distinguished subcategory of autism in the DSM-IV-TR defined by specific symptoms including difficulties in social interactions, inflexible thinking patterns, and repetitive behaviour without any delay in language or cognitive development. Studying the functional brain organization of individuals with these specific symptoms may help to better understand Autism spectrum symptoms. METHODS: The aim of this study is

What's race got to do with it? Factors contributing to self-change from cocaine use disorder among Black adults.

INTRODUCTION: A substantial number of people with substance use disorders recover without formal treatment, though we know little about the process of self-change among Black adults with cocaine use disorder (CUD) and whether racism contributes to the development of CUD and these adults' process of self-change. METHODS: The study team conducted qualitative interviews with 29 Black adults using a narrative and phenomenological approach. At the time of the interview, all participants met criteria for DSM-5 CUD prior to the past year but did not meet criteria for CUD in the past year and reporte

Clinical, epidemiological aspects, and trends of Hepatitis B in Brazil from 2007 to 2018.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a concern for public health due to its high prevalence, high infectivity, morbidity, and mortality worldwide. Brazil presents a low HBV prevalence, but has considerable heterogeneity among its geographic regions. Here, we describe the epidemiological profile of HBV infection in different regions of Brazil during 2007-2018, as well as the historical trends associated with the infection. We conducted an observational, ecological time-series study using secondary data collected from the National Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN). Our findings sugg

Health-related quality of life in Spanish informal caregivers: gender differences and support received.

PURPOSE: We analyzed gender differences in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and associated factors between informal male and female caregivers in Spain. It is important because of growing rates of dependent people and dwindling public resources. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 610 informal caregivers (265 male and 345 female) using an ad hoc structured questionnaire. We performed a descriptive analysis and used multivariate logistic regression to analyze the risk of poor HRQoL, measured with the EQ-5D-5L, according to caregiver sex, sociodemographic characteristics of c

A systematic review of the psychosocial factors associated with pain in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Pain is one of the most frequently reported experiences amongst children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA); however, the management of JIA pain remains challenging. As pain is a multidimensional experience that is influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors, the key to effective pain management lies in understanding these complex relationships. The objective of this study is to systematically review the literature on psychosocial factors of children with JIA and their caregivers 1) associated with and 2) predictive of later JIA pain intensity, frequency, and

Genomic epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in a university outbreak setting and implications for public health planning.

Whole genome sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 has occurred at an unprecedented scale, and can be exploited for characterising outbreak risks at the fine-scale needed to inform control strategies. One setting at continued risk of COVID-19 outbreaks are higher education institutions, associated with student movements at the start of term, close living conditions within residential halls, and high social contact rates. Here we analysed SARS-CoV-2 whole genome sequences in combination with epidemiological data to investigate a large cluster of student cases associated with University of Glasgow accommodat

Integrating planetary health into dentistry: an updated Montreal-Toulouse model.

The Earth has entered a critical phase, with seven of nine planetary boundaries already transgressed. This ecological catastrophe profoundly affects human health, highlighting the links between people's wellbeing and the state of the planet. Accordingly, health professionals are increasingly called to embrace planetary health and adopt sustainable practices. This is particularly relevant for dental clinics, which have a high ecological footprint and a responsibility to provide quality care that is both environmentally and socially sustainable. By integrating planetary health into practice, den

Psychological suzhi moderates state anxiety and heart rate responses to acute stress in male adolescents.

Psychological suzhi has increasingly been recognized to buffer chronic stress and improve mental health. However, few studies have examined the role of psychological suzhi in the response to acute stress. The current study aimed to investigate whether psychological suzhi can buffer state anxiety and heart rate responses to acute stress in adolescents. Healthy male adolescents (N = 63) were classified into high (N = 30) or low (N = 33) psychological suzhi groups based on the Chinese norm of adolescent psychological suzhi scale-simplified version. They completed both the modified Trier Social St

Effect of social isolation in dengue cases in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil: An analysis during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that human mobility is an important factor in dengue epidemiology. Changes in mobility resulting from COVID-19 pandemic set up a real-life situation to test this hypothesis. Our objective was to evaluate the effect of reduced mobility due to this pandemic in the occurrence of dengue in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. METHOD: It is an ecological study of time series, developed between January and August 2020. We use the number of confirmed dengue cases and residential mobility, on a daily basis, from secondary information sources. Mobility was represented by the

Rise of the Machines: A Critical Review on the Behavioural Effects of Automating Traditional Gambling Games.

Automated gambling products are now a common feature on many casino floors. Despite their increasing prevalence, little research has considered the impact of converting games traditionally free from technological enhancements to automated versions. This review seeks to illustrate how automation is likely to change the way people engage and experience traditional games based around five prominent modifications: visual and auditory enhancements; illusions of control; cognitive complexity; expedited play; and social customisation. Otherwise known as the "VICES" framework. The inclusion of rich gr

Policy implementation of methadone maintenance treatment and HIV infection: evidence from Hubei province, China.

To view methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) globally, it is necessary to accumulate data on MMT policy implementation under different health service systems. The aim of the current study is to provide empirical evidence about policy implementation of MMT and HIV infection control, as well as recommendations for improvement of MMT in the future. Based on China's national policy framework of MMT, policy implementation of MMT in Hubei province has two objectives: 1) to create linkages between health and public security, and 2) to provide integrated services for management of drug abusers. Cognitive-self consciousness and metacognitive beliefs: Stress sensitization in individuals at ultra-high risk of developing psychosis.

OBJECTIVE: Metacognitive beliefs (MCB) may guide information and attention processes, increasing affective and symptomatic reactions to stressful events. Cognitive self-consciousness (CSC; i.e., a preoccupation with one's thoughts) may increase awareness of MCB, potentially triggering the onset of psychotic symptoms. This study tested the hypotheses that (1), MCB would moderate affective and symptomatic reactions to stress in individuals at ultra-high risk (UHR) of developing psychosis, and (2), greater CSC would precede worsening in psychotic symptoms in individuals with strong MCB. METHOD:

In their own words: reports of stigma and genetic discrimination by people at risk for Huntington disease in the International RESPOND-HD study.

Genetic discrimination may be experienced in the day-to-day lives of people at risk for Huntington disease (HD), encompassing occurrences in the workplace, when seeking insurance, within social relationships, and during other daily encounters. At-risk individuals who have tested either positive or negative for the genetic expansion that causes HD, as well as at-risk persons with a 50% chance for developing the disorder but have not had DNA testing completed the International RESPOND-HD (I-RESPOND-HD) survey. One of the study's purposes was to examine perceptions of genetic stigmatization and d

Hostility, social support, and ambulatory cardiovascular activity.

The present study compared ambulatory blood pressure in male and female subjects preselected for high and low hostility levels and investigated interpersonal daily stress as a possible mediational mechanism. Ambulatory blood pressure and heart rate were measured in 48 male and female students previously classified as high or low on the Cook-Medley Hostility (Ho) Scale. Subjects wore an ambulatory monitor for a working day and also completed measures of perceived social support, daily interpersonal stress, and health behavior information. Results indicated that subjects scoring high on the Ho s

Lying and truth-telling in social interaction: Basic mechanisms.

Although deception mostly occurs in the spoken or written language, verbal deception--lying-- has received comparably little attention from both deception and language production research. Here we present three pre-registered online experiments (total N = 118, aged 18-35) using a novel paradigm to investigate lying and truth-telling in a socially interactive setting. Participants engaged in a picture-naming card game with a simulated task partner, sometimes choosing to lie strategically by producing the name of a card associated with their current card. Across experiments, they were slower to

Mechanisms and Pathways Linking Depression and Type 2 Diabetes Outcomes: A Scoping Review.

AIMS: People with diabetes experience a significantly higher prevalence of mental health issues, particularly depression. This adversely affects their diabetes management and overall health. This scoping review aims to develop a conceptual framework for understanding the connection between depression and diabetes outcomes globally, specifically focusing on intermediary factors that may influence this relationship. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and Global Index Medicus were searched using relevant keywords on May 17, 2024. The inclusion criteria encompassed peer-reviewed studies involving

Giving Resources to lOw-income Children to Enhance RecoverY (GROCERY): Protocol for a randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Social and structural factors drive health disparities in children. Hospitalization of a child is stressful for families, especially for low-income families who may experience exacerbation of food insecurity and other financial hardships. There is a need to evaluate interventions to support low-income families after hospitalization to improve child health and family well-being and ultimately to reduce health disparities. OBJECTIVES: In this randomized control trial (RCT), we will compare the effectiveness of a post-discharge financial support intervention with standard resources o
