Atypical neural synchronization in the temporal gyrus during face processing in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by deficits in face processing, which are closely related to difficulties in everyday social interactions. Previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have relied on static or simplified dynamic facial stimuli with limited ecological validity, failing to reflect the complex interplay of speech, expressions, and multimodal cues in real-world social contexts. To address these limitations, we used data from the Healthy Brain Network (HBN), which includes two movie-watching runs per participant, and selected homogeneous samples of 1

A familiar face and person processing area in the human temporal pole.

How does the brain process the faces of familiar people? Neuropsychological studies have argued for an area of the temporal pole (TP) linking faces with person identities, but magnetic susceptibility artifacts in this region have hampered its study with fMRI. Using data acquisition and analysis methods optimized to overcome this artifact, we identify a familiar face response in TP, reliably observed in individual brains. This area responds strongly to visual images of familiar faces over unfamiliar faces, objects, and scenes. However, TP did not just respond to images of faces, but also to a v

Impaired social brain network for processing dynamic facial expressions in autism spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Impairment of social interaction via facial expressions represents a core clinical feature of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). However, the neural correlates of this dysfunction remain unidentified. Because this dysfunction is manifested in real-life situations, we hypothesized that the observation of dynamic, compared with static, facial expressions would reveal abnormal brain functioning in individuals with ASD.We presented dynamic and static facial expressions of fear and happiness to individuals with high-functioning ASD and to age- and sex-matched typically developing controls

Enhancing health literacy and patient engagement through a privacy-aware social network-based digital health communication framework.

Digital health applications and social-network-enabled healthcare platforms have transformed healthcare delivery by facilitating health communication, patient engagement, and access to medical information. However, the continuous exchange of sensitive biomedical data across interconnected digital environments raises significant ethical, privacy, and security challenges that may compromise user trust and the effective adoption of digital health technologies. Existing studies primarily address individual security and privacy concerns, with limited attention to integrated frameworks that simultan

The characteristics of mixing patterns of sexual dyads and factors correlated with condomless anal intercourse among men who have sex with men in Guangzhou, China.

BACKGROUND: The HIV prevalence among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China has increased yearly. This study aimed to explore the association between the characteristics of social communication and condomless anal intercourse (CAI) among MSM and the implications for prevention and control of HIV among MSM in China using an egocentric network framework. METHODS: The data were collected in Guangzhou between November 2016 and May 2017 through standardized face-to-face interviews. The participants were recruited among MSM who received voluntary counselling and testing services (VCT) provided by

Roles of the Default Mode Network in Different Aspects of Self-representation When Remembering Social Autobiographical Memories.

Autobiographical memory (AM) is episodic memory for personally experienced events, in which self-representation is more important than that in laboratory-based memory. Theoretically, self-representation in a social context is categorized as the interpersonal self (IS) referred to in a social interaction with a person or the social-valued self (SS) based on the reputation of the self in the surrounding society. Although functional neuroimaging studies have demonstrated the involvement of the default mode network (DMN) in self-representation, little is known about how the DMN subsystems contribu

Differences in social and mental well-being of long-term survivors among people who inject drugs and other participants in the Swiss HIV Cohort Study: 1980-2018.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV who were diagnosed before highly active antiretroviral therapy became available in 1996 and who survived at least 15 years after HIV diagnosis, termed long-term survivors (LTS), form a particularly vulnerable population. We study social, clinical and mental factors of LTS in the Swiss HIV Cohort Study, with a particular focus on people who inject drugs (PWID). METHODS: We quantified differences between PWID LTS, and men who have sex with men (MSM) and heterosexual (HET) LTS. Using phylogenetic methods, we distinguished between heterosexual LTS who most likel

Biopsychosocial barriers and facilitators in the everyday lives of patients with restless legs syndrome: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common condition affecting 3% of the world's population. Pharmacological treatments do not cure RLS, and symptoms substantially affect everyday life. However, knowledge of biopsychosocial (BPS) factors influencing patients' everyday lives remains limited. This study aimed to explore and describe BPS barriers and facilitators influencing everyday life among patients with RLS. METHODS: A deductive, descriptive qualitative design grounded in the BPS model was employed. Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with 28 strategically selected

EEG Resting-state Microstate Dynamics in Children and Adolescents with Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID).

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a psychiatric condition characterized by extreme food avoidance and limited food intake, leading to nutritional deficiencies, weight loss, and and/or social impairment. Despite its clinical significance, there is a notable lack of research on the neurobiological basis of ARFID. To address this gap, we examined resting-state EEG brain activity in children and adolescents with ARFID, using microstate analysis to capture spatial configurations associated with large-scale brain networks, offering a novel perspective on brain network abnormalitie

Factors Influencing Caregivers' Use of Respite Care Services: Secondary Analysis of the National Study of Caregiving.

This study examines when and why unpaid caregivers use respite services. We conducted a secondary analysis of the 2017 National Study of Caregiving (NSOC) Wave III, a U.S. nationally representative sample comprising 2652 unpaid caregivers. We found that unpaid caregivers reporting financial, physical, and emotional difficulties in caregiving were more likely to use respite care services than those not reporting these challenges. White, non-Hispanic caregivers reporting that they received support from their social networks (families/friends) were more likely to use respite care services than no

Understanding Prevention and Management of Coronary Heart Disease Among Chinese Immigrants and Their Family Carers: A Socioecological Approach.

Introduction: Health disparities among immigrants exist across socioecological domains. While Chinese immigrants face increased risk for coronary heart disease (CHD) after migration, the reasons are not well understood. Method: This descriptive qualitative study collected 18 semistructured interviews with Chinese immigrants with CHD and family carers from two Australian hospitals. Analysis was guided by the social-ecological model. Results: Poor knowledge and limited English proficiency increased CHD risk and difficulty navigating health care systems/resources. Interpersonal and family factors

Link workers' perspectives on factors enabling and preventing client engagement with social prescribing.

For a social prescribing intervention to achieve its aims, clients must first be effectively engaged. A 'link worker' facilitating linkage between clients and community resources has been identified as a vital component of social prescribing. However, the mechanisms underpinning successful linkage remain underspecified. This qualitative study is the first to explore link workers' own definitions of their role in social prescribing and the skills and qualities identified by link workers themselves as necessary for effective client linkage. This study also explores 'threats' to successful linked

Neighborhood Disadvantage and Breast Cancer-Specific Survival.

IMPORTANCE: Neighborhood-level disadvantage is an important factor in the creation and persistence of underresourced neighborhoods with an undue burden of disparate breast cancer-specific survival outcomes. Although studies have evaluated neighborhood-level disadvantage and breast cancer-specific survival after accounting for individual-level socioeconomic status (SES) in large national cancer databases, these studies are limited by age, socioeconomic, and racial and ethnic diversity. OBJECTIVE: To investigate neighborhood SES (using a validated comprehensive composite measure) and breast can

Development and Validation of the Digital Mentalizing Questionnaire: A Multidimensional Self-Report for Online Social Networks.

Digital interactions are increasingly central to human social life, yet existing measures of mentalizing-defined as the capacity to interpret one's own and others' mental states-are primarily designed for face-to-face contexts and fail to capture the unique cognitive-affective demands of online social networks. This research introduces the Digital Mentalizing Questionnaire (DMQ), the first multidimensional, theory-driven instrument specifically developed to assess mentalizing processes in digital environments. Across three studies (N1 = 278, N2 = 375, N3 = 341; participants in Studies 1, 2, an
