PURPOSE: When faced with challenging communicative situations, people with dysarthria are commonly advised to rephrase their message, using common words and keeping sentences short and manageable. However, it remains unclear whether relevant clinical populations can implement these changes on demand. The goals of this study were to (a) identify lexical changes that occur when speakers are prompted to rephrase sentences and (b) examine how rephrasing messages affects acoustic measures of speech production and listener perceptual ratings.
METHOD: Speech samples were collected from 11 speakers w

OBJECTIVE: Most studies documenting the longitudinal recovery of auditory comprehension in poststroke aphasia begin in the subacute phase. The present study aimed to address this gap by exploring the longitudinal changes in auditory comprehension from the acute to the chronic phase and their neural correlates.
METHOD: Twenty-one Laurentian French persons with aphasia (PWA) following a first left middle cerebral artery stroke underwent three language assessments (acute: 0-72 hr, subacute: 7-14 days, chronic: 6-12 months postonset). Auditory comprehension was assessed at each time point using t

PURPOSE: The best liquid bolus protocol to use that accurately identifies penetration, aspiration, and residue on flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) remains unclear. Recently, the use of high-coating white food dye-colored water has been recommended; however, evidence to support its use is limited. In this study, penetration/aspiration and residue as a function of high-coating white water, low-coating white water, and milk were systematically evaluated.
METHOD: The effects of liquid type (i.e., high-coating white water, low-coating white water, and milk) and volume (i.e., 15,

PURPOSE: The study examined speech gains in three bilectal Cypriot-Greek speaking children with speech sound disorders. The study is based on theoretical frameworks that are on par with word-level characteristics and is motivated by the sparsity of cross-language studies in speech sound disorder intervention.
METHOD: A multiple-baseline, single-participant design was implemented across three participants with speech sound disorders aged 3;2-4;0 years across baseline (pre-test), intervention, post-test, and follow-up phases. Intervention was administered twice a week for two months. Treatment

PURPOSE: This viewpoint explores the idea that a neurodiversity-affirming social model and a medical model of stuttering health care are not mutually exclusive. In all cases, they should be used in combination. For any client, the only way to attain an optimal clinical outcome is to apply a combined medical and social health care perspective. The two models have a changing contribution across the lifespan, according to the client's requirements, age, and presenting complaints and the viability of neuroplastic change of the speech mechanism.
CONCLUSIONS: The benefits of neurodiversity applied

PURPOSE: Functional dysphagia is complex, affecting physical health as well as wellbeing. In this expert opinion paper with associated exemplar case series, we propose a framework for understanding functional dysphagia.
METHOD: A literature review of approaches to understanding and treating functional dysphagia are presented, moving beyond the predominant medical model to encompass psychosocial aspects of the condition. An exemplar case series of six clients is then given. Learnings from fields of laryngology and cognitive and applied behavioural psychology are discussed; and a biopsychosocia

PURPOSE: Providing care for family members with neurodegenerative diseases entails significant physical and psychosocial costs, increasing caregiver burden. Limited research exists on the factors contributing to dysphagia-related burden, particularly across disease trajectories. This study aimed to (a) determine if dysphagia-related burden predicts general caregiver burden, (b) identify predictors of dysphagia-related burden, and (c) examine relationships between dysphagia severity, disease severity, and dysphagia-related burden.

PURPOSE: People who have an acquired brain injury (ABI) experience challenges in using social media. However, rehabilitation clinicians report feeling inadequately prepared to support them in its use. We aimed to evaluate the outcomes of a multicomponent, peer-moderated social media skills intervention for people with ABI.
METHOD: This study utilized a mixed-methods, pre-post intervention design. Two people with ABI were invited to be research co-investigators and participated as peer moderators. A total of seven adults with an ABI were recruited to participate in the intervention and complet

PURPOSE: Many mealtime interventions have been developed over the past ten years. The effective implementation of such interventions into clinical practice is crucial to improve the swallowing safety and/or mealtime-related quality of life for people living with dysphagia or at risk of malnutrition. This systematic review summarises and critically appraises the literature on implementation of mealtime interventions in inpatient and aged care settings.
METHOD: A systematic database search was conducted using CINAHL, Embase, and MEDLINE. In total, 4475 records were identified and 25 studies met
