CHox11L2, a Hox11 related gene, is expressed in the peripheral nervous system and subpopulation of the spinal cord during chick development.

cHox11L2, the chick counterpart of mouse Hox11L2, was isolated. cHox11L2 was expressed in the developing chick peripheral nervous system, i.e. sensory cranial nerves of placodal ectoderm origin, sympathetic ganglia, dorsal root ganglia and enteric ganglia as well as a limited regions of the spinal cord. In neuronal derivatives of the neural crest, cHox11L2 was expressed in the postmigratory cells and not in the migrating neural crest cells. Furthermore, intense signals of cHox11L2 mRNA were detected also in the spinal cord and the dorsal roots of 10-day embryos. No transcripts were detected in

[The effect of the vibration and noise factor on the physical work capacity and autonomic nervous system function of workers in vibration-hazardous jobs].

An unexampled study was made of the peripheral vegetative incompetence syndrome developing in vibration disease. It is shown that chronic occupational exposure to vibration and noise results in damage to the segmentary apparatus of the vegetative nervous system. Vegetative inadequacies are manifested by impairement of cardiovascular functions. With exposure to vibration and noise, it is the sympathetic portion of the vegetative nervous system that is first affected. The service duration-related progression of the pathological process results in increase of the share of parasympathetic patholog

Autonomic functions in the early stages of Parkinson's disease.

Disturbances of autonomic nervous functions are common in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and may develop as a result of pathological changes in centers of autonomic regulation such as the hypothalamus, brainstem, and sympathetic ganglia. We examined cardiovascular reflexes using bedside, noninvasive procedures in 20 unmedicated PD patients with early stages of the disease (stage 1 and 2 on the Hoehn and Yahr's scale). Sixteen patients (80%) exhibited some degree of autonomic nervous system dysfunction. These included predominantly cardiovascular functions mediated via the parasympathet

Cysto-urethrographic appearance of the bladder and posterior urethra in neuromuscular disorders of the lower urinary tract.

Cysto-urethrography in the straight lateral projection with simultaneous intravesical pressure recording was performed in 57 patients with localized neurological lesions at different levels. All patients were previously extensively evaluated urodynamically. Bladder trabeculation was not related to level of neurological lesion or reflex pattern of the detrusor. Serration of the bladder wall was a reliable sign of a contracting detrusor in bladders without severe trabeculation. Open bladder neck at rest was related to lesion of the peripheral parasympathetic nervous system, while supposed insuff…

Experimental autonomic neuropathy: ultrastructure and immunohistochemical study of a disorder of reflex vasomotor function.

Vasomotor function in ear vessels of rabbits was tested in animals with experimental autonomic neuropathy (EAUN), experimental allergic neuritis (EAN), and controls. Reflex vasodilatation was impaired in animals with EAUN but not in EAN or control rabbits. Ultrastructural examination of paravertebral sympathetic chain, perivascular nerves, and perivascular tissue showed similar changes in all animals differing in degree only. Occasional lymphocytes were seen in paravertebral chains of controls but large numbers of lymphocytes and macrophages occurred in EAUN and EAN. No active destruction of m

Autonomic nervous system autoimmunity and proposed immunotherapies.

Autoimmune autonomic disorders are common, though often under-recognized, and suboptimally understood. Autonomic nervous system impairment may result from immune-mediated damage to central or peripheral autonomic pathways, and typically involve both sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, as well as the enteric nervous system. Various autoimmune conditions may primarily involve the autonomic nervous system, as in autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy associated with ganglionic nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antibodies or may involve autonomic systems as part of a multisystem neurologic proces

Autonomic Modulation for Cardiovascular Disease.

Dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system has been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, including congestive heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias. Despite advances in the medical and surgical management of these entities, progression of disease persists as does the risk for sudden cardiac death. With improved knowledge of the dynamic relationships between the nervous system and heart, neuromodulatory techniques such as cardiac sympathetic denervation and vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) have emerged as possible therapeutic approaches for the management of these disorders.

Central Inhibition of Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Reduces Hypertension by Attenuating Oxidative Stress in the Rostral Ventrolateral Medulla in Renovascular Hypertensive Rats.

Inflammation in the central nervous system is being considered a key player linked to neurogenic hypertension. Using combined in vivo and in vitro approaches, we investigated the effects of central inhibition of TNF-α on blood pressure, sympathetic tone, baroreflex sensitivity, and oxidative stress in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) of rats with 2-kidney-1-clip (2K1C) renovascular hypertension. Continuous infusion of pentoxifylline, a TNF-α inhibitor, into the lateral ventricle of the brain for 14 consecutive days reduced blood pressure and improved baroreflex sensitivity in renovascu

Autonomic hyperreflexia with spinal cord injury.

Autonomic hyperreflexia occurs in up to 85 percent of individuals with spinal cord injuries above the major splanchnic sympathetic outflow. In such cases, paroxysmal reflex sympathetic activity develops in response to noxious stimuli below the level of the neurologic lesion. The clinical features of autonomic hyperreflexia are due largely to reflex sympathetic adrenergic and cholinergic discharges with dysfunctional supraspinal regulatory control. Cephalgia, diaphoresis, flushing, tachycardia or bradycardia, and paroxysmal hypertension are most commonly observed. Although a variety of stimuli

Accelerated norepinephrine turnover in peripheral tissues after ventromedial hypothalamic stimulation in rats.

To obtain evidence for a functional connection between the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMH) and the sympathetic nervous system, effects of electrical stimulation of the VMH, the lateral hypothalamic area (LH) and the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus (PVN) on norepinephrine (NE) turnover in the heart, liver, pancreas, spleen, submandibular gland and the interscapular brown adipose tissue were examined in anesthetized rats. Stimulation of the VMH elicited a 3-8-fold increase in the rate of NE turnover in all organs examined, whereas stimulation of the LH or the PVN had no appreciable …

Transient anisocoria after a traumatic cervical spinal cord injury: A case report.

Context: Autonomic dysreflexia and dysautonomia can be a common complication following spinal cord injury, especially at levels of T6 and above and can lead to complications associated with the pupil. In this case report, we review autonomic dysreflexia, the anatomy and physiology of the sympathetic nervous system of the eye, as well as review the clinical relevance in understanding autonomic and pupillary changes in response to autonomic dysfunction.Findings: We present a patient with an incomplete C4 level injury who was found to have isolated anisocoria on two separate occasions during his …

Heroin-induced rhabdomyolysis as a cause of reflex sympathetic dystrophy.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy is an excessive or abnormal response of the sympathetic nervous system in an extremity to an injury or other condition. The authors describe a 37-year-old man who experienced constant pain and vasomotor instability in both feet after nontraumatic rhabdomyolysis secondary to smoking heroin. Three-phase bone scintigraphy was performed and revealed significantly increased blood-flow, blood-pool, and delayed-phase radioactivity. The follow-up three-phase bone scinitigram showed less radiotracer uptake that was consistent with a good response to calcitonin therapy. Hero…

Rodent submandibular gland peptide hormones and other biologically active peptides.

The cervical sympathetic trunk-submandibular gland neuroendocrine axis plays an integral role in physiological adaptations and contributes to the maintenance of systemic homeostasis, particularly under the 'stress conditions' seen with tissue damage, inflammation, and aggressive behavior. The variety of polypeptides, whose release from acinar and ductal cells is under sympathetic nervous system control, offers coordinated and progressive levels of endocrine communication. Proteolytic enzymes (e.g. the kallikreins and furin maturases) are involved in the conversion of inactive precursors (e. g.…

[Autonomic function and circulatory failure].

To define fundamental mechanisms for sympathoexcitation could provide a therapeutic opportunity to interrupt the specific site linking sympathetic activation with heart failure. Central sleep apnea is characterized by apnea, hypoxia, sleep fragmentation, and increased sympathetic nerve activity. Since this sympathoexcitation is directly related to the frequency of arousals from sleep and the degree of apnea-related hypoxia, but not to left ventricular ejection fraction, it is therefore not simply a compensatory response to hemodynamic derangement but is excessive and pathologic sympathoexcitat

New thoughts on reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome.

Chronic pain caused by a sympathetic nervous system aberration must be considered separately from chronic pain resulting from carcinoma, arthritis, neuropathies and other delineated pathology. Because the pathophysiology of these conditions and their associated pain can be explained, treatment modalities can be planned specific to the affected individual and targeted toward the altered physiology. If the pathophysiology is not clearly defined or understood, as is the case in reflex sympathetic dystrophy and other idiopathic pain conditions, then prescription and remediation become a challenge …

Neurogenic pulmonary edema associated with autonomic dysreflexia.

Neurogenic pulmonary edema is associated with a variety of central nervous system injuries and results from a massive centrally mediated sympathetic discharge. Another syndrome characterized by sympathetic overactivity is autonomic dysreflexia, which occurs in patients with spinal cord injury above T4 to T6. We describe a patient with a cervical spinal cord injury who had intense, prolonged autonomic dysreflexia following external sphincterotomy, which culminated in pulmonary edema. Traction on an over-inflated Foley catheter balloon was the stimulus for autonomic dysreflexia and deflation of

Yoga therapy for anxiety: a case report.

Yoga therapy is a mind-body intervention that can be an important solution in the treatment of anxiety. Yoga therapy alleviates the hyperarousal of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the hypervigilance of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis that occurs in anxiety. Yoga therapy activates the parasympathetic branch of the nervous system, replacing SNS overdrive, or the flight-or-fight response, with the relaxation response and balancing the nervous system. Yoga therapy increases positive coping skills and builds self-esteem without harmful side effects. The results of this case s…

[The autonomic nervous system and disorders of heart rhythm. II].

The authors present in their review recent findings on the importance of the autonomous nervous system in disorders of the cardiac rhythm. They emphasize its modulating action in the development, maintenance and termination of many arrhythmias. Vegetative nervous influences may play a part in people without organic heart disease but are manifested more markedly above all at sites of previous damage. Mechanisms by which the autonomous nervous system influences the development and course of arrhythmias are very complicated and so far not completely elucidated. In addition to a generalized tonus
