[Pneumonia and the acute respiratory distress syndrome due to influenza A (H1N1) virus].

The acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and acute lung injury (ALI) are part of a devastating syndrome characterized by acute onset, hypoxemia, and bilateral infiltrates on chest x-rays. ALI/ARDS is the response of the lung to a local or systemic aggression, resulting in local inflammation and coagulation disorders, which lead to increased inflammatory pulmonary edema. ARDS is a major cause of morbidity, death, and cost in intensive care units. The most common cause is sepsis. We present a case of ARDS secondary to infection with the influenza A (H1N1) virus. The influenza A (H1N1) viru

Pulmonary Manifestations of Sepsis.

Sepsis is an inflammatory response to severe infection, which can affect any organ system. This inflammatory response can lead to life-threatening end organ dysfunction. In this article, we review pulmonary complications of sepsis including hypoxemia and acute respiratory distress syndrome. We also discuss pulmonary sources of sepsis including the management of community- and hospital-acquired pneumonia and ventilator-associated pneumonia.

Ac2-26 mitigated acute respiratory distress syndrome rats via formyl peptide receptor pathway.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterized by severe local and systemic inflammation. Ac2-26, an Annexin A1 Peptide, can reduce the lung injury induced by reperfusion via the inhibition of inflammation. The present study aims to evaluate the effect and mechanism of Ac2-26 in ARDS. METHODS: Thirty-two rats were anaesthetized and randomized into four groups: sham (S), ARDS (A), ARDS/Ac2-26 (AA), and ARDS/Ac2-26/BOC-2 (AAB) groups. Rats in the S group received saline for intratracheal instillation, while rats in the other three groups received endotoxin for intratrac

Novel Insight into Inflammatory Pathways in Acute Pulmonary Embolism in Humans.

Accumulating data have shown a pathophysiological association between inflammatory pathways and thrombosis. Venous thromboembolism (VTE), which includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and acute pulmonary embolism (APE), is a significant health burden. It involves not only hemodynamic disturbances due to the emboli occluding the pulmonary arteries, but also platelet activation, endothelial dysfunction, and "firing up" of the inflammatory cascade. In humans, the systemic inflammatory state can also be evaluated using plasma levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin (IL)-6, which correlate w

Primary Remitting Seronegative Symmetrical Synovitis With Pitting Oedema: A Case Report.

Remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting oedema (RS3PE) syndrome is a rare disease that typically presents in older men and is characterised by bilateral and symmetrical peripheral arthritis, pitting oedema in the dorsal hands and feet, and seronegativity for rheumatoid factor. A notable feature of this syndrome is its excellent response to systemic corticosteroid therapy. This article presents a case of a 75-year-old White male patient recently diagnosed with bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome. He reported complaints of distal and symmetrical inflammatory polyarthralgia for thr

MEF2C alleviates acute lung injury in cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced sepsis rats by up-regulating AQP1.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response syndrome and leads to patient's death. Objective: To investigate the effect of myocyte enhancer factor 2 (MEF2C) on acute lung injury (ALI) with sepsis and its possible mechanism. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced sepsis rat model was established. The lung injury was determined by lung wet-dry weight ratio, the concentration of inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), Interlukin (IL)-6, IL-1β, and IL-10, were measured by the enzyme-linked-immunosorbent serologic assay kit. Molecular mechanisms of vasculopathy and coagulopathy in COVID-19.

COVID-19 primarily affects the respiratory system and may lead to severe systemic complications, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), multiple organ failure, cytokine storm, and thromboembolic events. Depending on the immune status of the affected individual early disease control can be reached by a robust type-I-interferon (type-I-IFN) response restricting viral replication. If type-I-IFN upregulation is impaired, patients develop severe COVID-19 that involves profound alveolitis, endothelitis, complement activation, recruitment of immune cells, as well as immunothrombosis. In

Affected inflammation-related signaling pathways in snake envenomation: A recent insight.

Snake envenomation is well known to cause grievous pathological signs, including haemorrhagic discharge, necrosis, and respiratory distress. However, inflammatory reactions are also common envenoming manifestations that lead to successive damage, such as oedema, ulceration, lymphadenectasis, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and even multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Interference with the inflammatory burst is hence important in the clinical treatment of snake envenomation. Here, we summarize the typical snake toxins (or venoms) that cause inflammatory reactions and the …

Exendin-4 as a multi-target therapy for Fetal Inflammatory Response Syndrome-induced brain injury.

Fetal Inflammatory Response Syndrome (FIRS) is a leading cause of neonatal brain injury for which no specific treatment currently exists. This review proposes that Exendin-4, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, is a promising "network therapy" due to its multi-target actions against the interconnected pathologies of FIRS. We synthesize evidence that Exendin-4 can concurrently mitigate neuroinflammation, protect oligodendrocytes, stabilize the blood-brain barrier, and attenuate excitotoxicity. Furthermore, we explore emerging mechanisms such as microglial metabolic reprogramming and enh

A threshold effect of Apolipoprotein A1 levels on systemic inflammatory response index in individuals with osteoporotic fractures: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammation and lipid metabolism are closely associated with osteoporotic fractures. Previous studies have reported associations between Apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) and inflammatory markers in specific inflammatory diseases. Nevertheless, the association between ApoA1 and the Systemic Inflammatory Response Index (SIRI) has been scarcely investigated in populations with osteoporotic fractures. We therefore conducted this cross-sectional study to examine this association. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 2067 patients with osteoporotic fractures (OPF) needing surgical

Pro-inflammatory role of neutrophils populations in trauma patients: monitoring neutrophil populations.

BACKGROUND: Trauma is a leading global cause of mortality, and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) remains a significant complication, contributing to adverse outcomes. Neutrophils, as first responders to tissue injury, undergo substantial phenotypic and functional changes following trauma. This study investigates neutrophil subpopulations defined by CD16 and CD62L expression in trauma patients, focusing on their correlation with clinical biomarkers, trauma severity, and functional properties. METHODS: We included 50 non-infectious trauma patients, categorized into SIRS and Non-SIR…

Pathologic Analysis of Twenty-one Appendices From Children With Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome Compared to Specimens of Acute Appendicitis: A Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a rare, severe complication of coronavirus disease 2019, commonly involving the gastrointestinal tract. Some children with MIS-C undergo appendectomy before the final diagnosis. There are several hypotheses explaining the pathomechanism of MIS-C, including the central role of the viral antigen persistence in the gut, associated with lymphocyte exhaustion. We aimed to examine appendectomy specimens from MIS-C patients and assess their pathologic features, as well as the presence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus
