Pectoralis major tendon injuries are an uncommon injury. They can be treated with primary repair, however, when the tendon becomes retracted it necessitates tendon reconstruction. We performed a systematic review to evaluate patient characteristics, surgical techniques, and outcomes associated with pectoralis major reconstruction. A review was performed for studies published between 1990 and 2019. Peer-reviewed studies with a minimum 1-year follow-up were included. Return to activity, range of motion, complications, and functional outcome scores were primary outcomes. Fourteen primary studies

INTRODUCTION: Foot drop is a disorder that impairs walking and leads to tripping and falling. Tendon transfer (e.g., tibialis posterior tendon) is a typical secondary procedure in foot drop treatment. The purpose of this systematic review was to identify the most common tendon transfer techniques for treating foot drop and to analyze the reported functional outcomes. Furthermore, it was of interest if the type of surgical technique affects the functional outcome.
METHODS: A PubMed and MEDLINE literature search was performed according to PRISMA guidelines. The search terms used were ("tendon t

The present study investigated the relationship between type of calcaneal fractures and subluxation or dislocation of peroneal tendon. Also, we investigated clinical outcomes of patients with both calcaneal fractures and dislocations or subluxations of peroneal tendons in early surgical treatments (at the time of surgery for calcaneal fractures) and delayed surgical treatment (at the time of surgery for calcaneal plate removal) for dislocations or subluxations of peroneal tendons. We included 151 patients with calcaneal fractures who were followed for ≥2 years after surgery. Among them, 21 cas…

Management of the cavus foot is a difficult task for the foot and ankle surgeon. Tendon transfers have been a longstanding accepted treatment for the flexible cavus foot. Performing tendon transfers requires an in-depth understanding of the patient's medical history, factors leading to the development of deformity, as well as the deforming forces contributing to the deformity. Evaluation of the patient for rigid, progressive, and/or spastic deformities is critical to avoid postoperative complications. Educating the patient on postoperative rehabilitation, potential complications, and postopera

BACKGROUND: The Achilles tendon (AT) develops from the merge of the tendinous part of the gastrocnemius (GM) and soleus (SM) muscles. The AT is the structural base for the biomechanical work of the ankle joint. Understanding morphometry of the AT is crucial due to the tendon vulnerability to rupture and damage which requires further surgical repair and management. Despite its clinical significance, data concerning measurements of the AT in human foetuses are scare. The aim of our study was to assess the AT, GM and SM morphometry in human foetuses.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-seven spontaneo

The triceps brachii muscle is the main extender of the elbow joint. Triceps tendon rupture or tearing presents a rare injury pattern in general. Distal tendon ruptures occur most commonly in the area of the insertion of the olecranon. Fractures of the radial head are reported as the most common concomitant injury. In many cases, pre-existing degenerative damage predisposes for tendon injury. These include local steroid injections, anabolic steroid abuse, renal insufficiency requiring dialysis, hyperparathyroidism, lupus erythematosus and Marfan's syndrome. However, the most frequent trauma mec

BACKGROUND: Ruptures of the anterior tibial tendon can be both acute and chronic. The acute lesion can be caused by a sharp cutting trauma or by blunt or hyperplantarflexion trauma. Spontaneous ruptures are rare, and most ruptures are due to degenerative changes mainly affecting the distal avascular 5-30 mm of the tendon. Surgical repair is the preferred treatment for physically active patients. Overall, the literature shows that operative repair results in a very good outcome in most patients. This study compares the clinical outcome in patients with anterior tibial tendon rupture, treated wi

BACKGROUND: Though the tibialis anterior (TA) serves a vital role in ankle dorsiflexion, there is little information regarding risk factors and demographic information that might predispose one to tendinopathy or rupture. This study investigates the features of patients in a single institution who presented with either TA tendinopathy or rupture. The circumstances surrounding rupture were also noted.
METHODS: ICD-9/10 codes were used to find patients who presented with TA pathology to 2 foot and ankle surgeons at 1 academic medical center from 2011 to 2018. Patient characteristics were noted,

The problem of tendon and ligament (T/L) regeneration in musculoskeletal diseases has long constituted a major challenge. In situ injection of formable biodegradable hydrogels, however, has been demonstrated to treat T/L injury and reduce patient suffering in a minimally invasive manner. An injectable hydrogel is more suitable than other biological materials due to the special physiological structure of T/L. Most other materials utilized to repair T/L are cell-based, growth factor-based materials, with few material properties. In addition, the mechanical property of the gel cannot reach the no

Tissue grafts achieve high levels of compositional and mechanical integrity biomimicry and are often considered as the gold standard in clinical practice. Herein, we assessed the potential of decellularised porcine peritoneum (XenoMEM) as a tendon protector sheet and correlated its properties to a commercially available product (TenoGlide®). XenoMEM presented lower cross-linking ratio (p < 0.05), higher mechanical properties (p < 0.01), lower coefficient of friction (p < 0.01) and higher (p < 0.05) cytocompatibility with human tenocytes than TenoGlide®. In addition, XenoMEM exhibited lower (p

The pathologic conditions of the Achilles tendon are best understood in the context of its unique anatomy and functional demands. Some of these unique considerations include its high physiologic load demands, microscopic tissue composition, muscular origin spanning the knee joint, intimate insertional relationship with the plantar fascia, sensory innervation, and vascular supply with watershed areas. Risks of both acute rupture and chronic tendinopathy are affected by the tendon's anatomy and its functional demands. The tendon's functional anatomy changes with advancing age, notably in its col

Bilateral patellar tendon rupture is an extremely rare occurrence, especially in otherwise healthy individuals without systemic disease. The authors report the case of a man who presented with simultaneous, spontaneous bilateral rupture of his patellar tendons. He had a history of unilateral patellar tendinopathy but no other predisposing risk factors such as steroid or fluoroquinolone use. He underwent surgical repair and following intensive rehabilitation, he returned to baseline physical activity 6 months post injury.

The fast and steady development of arthroscopy techniques in the last couple of decades led to a drastic increase of arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs over the open procedure. Supraspinatus tears are the most common of all, but the subscapularis tendon tear is a more common injury than expected. Most of the time it presents as a partial tear or is associated with a subsequent rotator cuff tendon injury, especially the supraspinatus. Nowadays, the standard procedure to repair the subscapularis tendon is performed arthroscopically, even though a real superior result over the open repair it is ye

The goal of treatment after Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) is to restore appropriate tension to the tendon, so that normal baseline strength and functional soft-tissue length can be achieved. The assessment of plantarflexion strength has shown widespread variability. The purpose of this study is to document variations in strength assessment after the treatment of ATR in the literature. A comprehensive literature review was performed. In total, 2758 articles were found on Achilles tendon rupture and Achilles tendon strength measurement. The full text of articles including strength as a functiona

Tenosynovitis of the tibialis anterior tendon may occur as an overuse injury due to repetitive foot dorsiflexion. Most cases respond to conservative treatment with rest, shoe modification, anti-inflammatory agents, and physical therapy. Surgery may be required for chronic cases recalcitrant to conservative treatment. Other causes of tibialis anterior tenosynovitis include rheumatologic and infectious conditions. Classically, an operation on the tibialis anterior tendon is performed with open approach requiring dissection of the extensor retinacula. The purpose of this Technical Note is to desc
