Brief Audiovisual Feedback Training Yields Long-Lasting Gains in Multisensory Integration and Speech Comprehension: Contributions of Different Cognitive Abilities.

The ability to integrate information from different sensory modalities, such as vision and hearing, enables us to perceive and understand complex stimuli. The relevance of this ability can be seen in speech perception, for example, which requires the integration of auditory (e.g., voice) and visual (e.g., lip movements) information. Recent studies have shown that the accuracy of this integration process, and thus speech comprehension, can be improved by brief audiovisual feedback training. However, the long-term stability as well as associated cognitive mechanisms are not yet fully understood.

The impact of tezepelumab therapy on perceived asthma triggers: a multicenter real-life study.

OBJECTIVE: Asthma exacerbations are often triggered by factors such as respiratory infections, allergens, exercise, and airway irritants, significantly affecting patients' respiratory symptoms and quality of life. Effective management of triggers is crucial in severe asthma care. Tezepelumab, an anti-thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) monoclonal antibody, can effectively reduce severe asthma exacerbations and symptoms burden. However, its impact on patients' perception of trigger-related symptoms remains underexplored. METHODS: We conducted an observational, multicenter study involving 30 se

The Perception of Pelvic Floor Muscle Function amongst Exercising Women Who Are Repeatedly Instructed to Contract Their Pelvic Floor Muscles.

In this study, the self-perception of pelvic floor muscle (PFM) contractions amongst women receiving repeated verbal instructions during exercise classes was examined. The prevalence and severity of urinary stress incontinence were also assessed. This cross-sectional observational study included 46 women (mean age 48 (±8.6)), who regularly participated in Pilates classes where repeated instruction was given to contract PFM ("instruction group"; N = 22) or not (controls, N = 24). PFM function was evaluated using transabdominal ultrasound. Simultaneously, the participant described her personal e

Nonlinear Effects of Noxious Thermal Stimulation and Working Memory Demands on Subjective Pain Perception.

OBJECTIVE: A bidirectional relationship between working memory (WM) and acute pain has long been assumed, but equivocal evidence exists regarding this relationship. This study characterized the relationship between WM and acute pain processing in healthy individuals using an adapted Sternberg WM task. DESIGN: Participants completed a Sternberg task while receiving noxious thermal stimulation. Participants received a pseudorandom presentation of four different temperatures (baseline temperatures and individually determined low-, medium-, and high-temperature stimuli) and four levels of Sternbe

Threats to identity: lipodystrophy and identity changes in people with HIV/AIDS (PWA).

BACKGROUND AND AIM: PWA today have to face new problems associated with their disease state. One of these is tied to bodily changes that are related to HAART (lipodystrophy syndrome, LDS). Applying the Identity Process Theory (Breakwell, 1986), this research aimed to study the impact that LDS body changes may have on the identity of PWA. METHOD: One hundred and eight patients (79 M and 29 F, ranging from 35 to 75 years old) at a North Italian clinic completed a questionnaire composed of scales measuring the perception of threats to the identity of PWA, physicians' and patients' assessment of

Effects of methylphenidate and MDMA on appraisal of erotic stimuli and intimate relationships.

Methylphenidate mainly enhances dopamine neurotransmission whereas 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, "ecstasy") mainly enhances serotonin neurotransmission. However, both drugs also induce a weaker increase of cerebral noradrenaline exerting sympathomimetic properties. Dopaminergic psychostimulants are reported to increase sexual drive, while serotonergic drugs typically impair sexual arousal and functions. Additionally, serotonin has also been shown to modulate cognitive perception of romantic relationships. Whether methylphenidate or MDMA alter sexual arousal or cognitive appraisal of

The perception of lexical tone in Mambila.

The issue of the perception of lexical tone has been addressed mainly through studies of Southeast Asian languages which feature phonological contour tones as well as level tones. Little attention has been paid to African languages which have, almost exclusively, only level tones. This paper examines tone perception in Mambila, a Benue-Congo language with four level lexical tones. A categorization experiment was run to determine some of the salient aspects of the perceptual nature of these tones. Since the four tones are well defined with respect to production, we sought to determine whether t

Implementation of virtual reality for patient distraction during diagnostic cardiac catheterisation.

Until now, the application of virtual reality as a distraction model has been widely described in the medical field, showing different benefits offered on patient's perception, particularly related to pain and anxiety. Previous clinical experience of virtual reality applications on surgical intervention has shown how during procedures with local anaesthesia, this modality improves patients' experience without changing times, costs, and clinical outcomes. Herein, we report our experience with three patients during diagnostic cardiac catheterisation, showing the effect of this technology on pati

The CDC's management and COVID-19 vaccine recommendations during the COVID-19 pandemic: A healthcare worker's perspective.

The CDC's COVID-19 pandemic guidelines affected everyone, especially healthcare workers (HCWs) due to the high exposure risks, long hours and stress during the pandemic. Thus, understanding HCWs perceptions and acceptance of these guidelines were crucial to patient outcomes. Our goal was to investigate HCWs views on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) management of the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccine recommendations. Data were collected from an online survey of HCWs in Pennsylvania (August 2022 - February 2023). Eligible participants (n = 580) aged 21 + , reported COVID-19 vacci

Oscillatory Transcranial Electrical Stimulation and the Amplitude-Modulated Frequency Dictate the Quantitative Features of Phosphenes.

Previous research demonstrated that transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can induce phosphene perception. However, tACS involves rhythmic changes in the electric field and alternating polarity (excitatory vs. inhibitory phases), leaving the precise mechanism behind phosphene perception unclear. To disentangle the effects of rhythmic changes from those of alternating polarity, this study employs oscillatory transcranial direct current stimulation (otDCS), in which the current oscillation remains confined to either a positive or negative polarity, thereby eliminating the influence

Influence of perceived peer behavior on engagement in self-damaging behaviors during the transition to university.

As students transition to university, they experience significant social changes that can affect their behaviors, including self-damaging behaviors like disordered eating, problematic alcohol/drug use, suicidal thoughts, and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Building on prior work, we examined the associations between (1) perceptions of peers' engagement in self-damaging behaviors predicting one's own subsequent engagement in such behaviors (i.e., socialization) and (2) one's own engagement in self-damaging behaviors predicting perceptions of peers' subsequent engagement in such behaviors (i.e.

The influence of rightward and leftward spatial deviations of spatial attention on emotional picture recognition.

OBJECTIVES: Several studies have reported that positive emotions are primarily mediated by the left hemisphere and negative emotions by the right hemisphere. Since each hemisphere primarily allocates attention toward the contralateral hemispace, we wanted to learn how inducing a spatial attentional orienting bias to right and left egocentric hemispace might influence the recognition and perception of visually presented emotional scenes. METHOD: Participants were 42 healthy, right-handed young adults. To induce a directional change in spatial attention, we used a horizontal prism adaptation (P

The perceptions of individuals with anorexia nervosa regarding their family's understanding of their illness, treatment, and recovery.

The current study explores how affected individuals understand their family's perceptions of anorexia nervosa (AN). Perceptions of individuals with AN regarding their family's understanding of the illness may influence their ability to accept family support. Thematic analysis was used on qualitative data of 19 individuals with AN undergoing inpatient treatment. Participants perceived that families: (a) considered AN a problem with food rather than a mental illness; and (b) viewed treatment as time limited, and complete recovery as achievable. Family-based interventions are needed to facilitate
