Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray microanalysis (EDS) were used to investigate stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in plain tinplate food cans, product discoloration, filiform corrosion, pitting/perforation corrosion, and loss of coating adhesion in enameled food cans. Intergranular SCC of uncoated tinplate occurred in canned pineapple juice. This is a rare occurrence in acid food products. Superconducting-state properties of a noncentrosymmetric Th7Ni3 compound have been investigated using magnetic, electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements as well as by electronic band structure calculations. The study reveals that the studied compound is a dirty type-II superconductor with [Formula: see text] K and a weak electron-phonon coupling [Formula: see text]. Five organotin(IV) compounds were synthesized from N'-[(1E)-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)methylidene]pyridine-4-carbohydrazone and the corresponding dialkyltin(IV) or trialkyltin(IV) precursor. Transamination of Sn(NMe2)4 with H2NMes (Mes is 2,4,6-tri-methyl-phenyl, C9H11) led to the formation of the title compound, [Sn(C9H12N)4] or Sn(NHMes)4, which crystallizes in the tetra-gonal space group P 21 c, with four formula units per unit cell. The mol-ecular structure consists of a central tin(IV) atom, which is surrounded by four NHMes groups. Sn(NHMes)4 possesses crystallographically imposed symmetry. The SnN4 coordination polyhedron is best described as a compressed bis-phenoid.

The Sn(IV) cation in the title compound, [Sn(CH3)2(C10H8NO)2], is N,O-chelated by two 2-methyl-quinolin-8-olate anions and coordinated by two methyl groups in a skew-trapezoidal bipyramidal geometry. In the mol-ecule, the two quinoline ring systems are twisted to one another at 10.91 (18)°. The dimethyl-tin skeleton [C-Sn-C = 149.6 (2)°] is bent over the longer edge of the trapezoid that is defined by the four chelating atoms. Weak inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bonding occurs in the crystal.

Two cases of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, including one death, occurred in workers at a facility producing indium-tin oxide (ITO), a compound used in recent years to make flat panel displays. Both workers were exposed to airborne ITO dust and had indium in lung tissue specimens. One worker was tested for autoantibodies to granulocytemacrophage-colonystimulating factor (GM-CSF) and found to have an elevated level. These cases suggest that inhalational exposure to ITO causes pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, which may occur via an autoimmune mechanism.

A new superatom of dual valence states, namely Al7Li, has been proposed to further enrich the "three-dimensional periodic table". It bears great resemblance to group IVA elements in many aspects.
