Biomechanical association of dental and temporomandibular pathology in a medieval Nubian population.

An analysis of the relationship between oral pathology and degenerative change at the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) was undertaken on an archaeological sample of 122 adult crania from the Medieval site of Kulubnarti in Sudanese Nubia. The crania were sorted into 2 groups: those demonstrating clearly visible bony changes at the joint (TMJ+) and those without visible change (TMJ-). These groups were compared according to 1) age; 2) sex; 3) active dental pathologies (abscesses, caries, partial socket resorption); 4) tooth loss with complete socket resorption; and 5) dental attrition. No statistic…

[Facial skin fistula as a postoperative complication of a mandibular guided bone regeneration].

Bone resorption is a consequence of the loss of a tooth. Alveolar ridge resorption can restrict the volume of bone available for the positioning of a dental implant. Bone graft is a routinely performed procedure in order to increase this volume and provide an adequate situation for the replacement of the tooth. However, autogenous bone is the gold standard for this procedure, xenogenous bone is a good alternative. It presents reliable results and a low complication rate. In this article, we describe the case of an infection resulting in a facial skin fistula following a guided bone regeneratio

Effects of destructive periodontitis, induced by diet, on the mechanical properties of the periodontal ligament of the mandibular first molar in golden hamsters.

To examine progressive changes in the mechanical properties of the periodontal ligament in the hamster mandibular first molar with experimental periodontitis--induced by feeding a high-carbohydrate diet--load-deformation curves obtained by extracting the tooth from its socket in the dissected jaw were analyzed. The maximum shear load, elastic stiffness and failure energy in shear in the experimental groups decreased significantly during the experimental period. On the other hand, significant differences in the maximum deformation were not found between the experimental and the relevant control

Interdisciplinary treatment of an end-to-end occlusion due to congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors.

Odontogenic aplasia, or the congenital absence of permanent teeth, is relatively common. When the missing teeth include the maxillary lateral incisors, treatment considerations must reconcile both esthetic and functional objectives. In developing dentition, erupting adjacent teeth can drift from their intended positions into the edentulous space created by the congenitally missing tooth. When this movement happens (e.g., cuspids shifting more mesially than normal), esthetic and functional problems occur. A restorative solution for missing maxillary lateral incisors subsequent to the loss of th

Roussy-Lévy syndrome is a phenotypic variant of Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome IA associated with a duplication on chromosome 17p11.2.

The Roussy-Lévy syndrome (MIM #180800) was described in 1926 as a disorder presenting with pes cavus and tendon areflexia, distal limb weakness, tremor in the upper limbs, gait ataxia and distal sensory loss. We report a family with affected members in four generations, showing these clinical signs of Roussy-Lévy syndrome and a partial duplication at chromosome 17p11.2. This genetic defect is commonly found in patients with the hypertrophic form of the Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome. Our finding provides evidence against the Roussy-Lévy syndrome as a distinct entity but suggests a close relation

Current status of the biomechanics of extra-alveolar miniscrews.

Temporary skeletal anchorage devices such as miniscrews are frequently used nowadays. Compared to miniplates, miniscrews are much less expensive and technically easier to place and remove; they are popular and can be easily placed by an orthodontist. Extra-alveolar miniscrews offer benefits compared to inter-radicular miniscrews, such as reduced risk of root damage and the lack of interference with the mesiodistal tooth movement. They are particularly useful for addressing anchorage loss issues and enabling specific tooth movements such as total arch maxillary and mandibular retraction, poster

Mandibular exostosis in canine with single tooth recession - a rare case report.

Buccal exostoses occur along the buccal aspect of the maxilla or mandible, usually in the premolar and molar areas. It has been suggested that the bony outgrowth represents a reaction to increased or abnormal occlusal stress to the teeth in the involved areas. Gingival recessions may occur without any symptoms but may give rise to the patient concern about poor esthetics, dentine hypersensitivity, inability to perform oral hygiene procedures, and loss of the tooth. This article presents a rare case of exostosis in the mandibular right canine region and single tooth recession in the mandibular

Repositioning of a completely intruded permanent incisor with surgical extrusion: a 4-year follow-up case.

Intrusive luxation is a serious dental injury in the permanent dentition that has a poor prognosis. There is a lock of consensus concerning the management of intruded permanent teeth because of a small number of published studies and the injury's complicated nature. The purpose of this report was to present the successful outcome of a completely intruded permanent maxillary right central incisor with a concomitant uncomplicated enamel fracture in a 9-year-old boy. The intruded tooth was repositioned via surgical extrusion and splinted with a semirigid splint for three weeks. Clinical and radio

Parameter on Chronic Periodontitis With Slight to Moderate Loss of Periodontal Support.

The American Academy of Periodontology has developed the following parameter on the treatment of chronic periodontitis with slight to moderate loss of periodontal supporting tissues. Patients should be informed of the disease process, therapeutic alternatives, potential complications, expected results, and their responsibility in treatment. Consequences of no treatment should be explained. Failure to appropriately treat chronic periodontitis can result in progressive loss of periodontal supporting tissues, an adverse change in prognosis, and could result in tooth loss. Given this information, …

Correlation between dental enamel chemical composition and bracket debonding, comparing adhesive systems through a scanning electron microscope.

Literature reports indicate that during bracket removal there can be enamel damage. We compare the shear bond strength (SBS) and tooth enamel loss of four adhesive systems and identify the Ca/P ratio. Then a total of 20 premolars were divided into four groups of five each. After prophylaxis, photographs were taken at 35× with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and analyzed with X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) at 250×. Brackets were bonded with Transbond™ MIP(G1), Transbond™ PLUS SEP(G2), Enlight(G3) and Stylus®(G4) adhesives, 24 h after were debonded with a Instron universal testing machine at 1 mm

Incidence and progression of dental erosion in adolescents and adults: results from the 6th German Oral Health Study (DMS • 6).

OBJECTIVES: Exposure to acidic and mechanical forces results in the continuous loss of dental hard tissue over the course of life, commonly referred to as tooth wear. However, longitudinal data on tooth wear are limited. Particularly, data on acid-induced wear, such as dental erosion, are scarce. This study assessed the incidence and progression of dental erosion over 9 years in adolescents and adults using data from the 6th German Oral Health Study (DMS • 6). METHOD AND MATERIALS: The sample included 371 adolescents and 341 adults from the DMS • 6 cohort who were first examined in 2014 (base

Micro-Osteoperforations Accelerate Tooth Movement without Exacerbating the Progression of Root Resorption in Rats.

A recent study reported that micro-osteoperforations (MOPs) accelerated tooth movement by activating alveolar bone remodeling. However, very little is known about the relationship between MOPs and external apical root resorption during orthodontic treatment. In this study, in order to investigate the mechanism through which MOPs accelerate tooth movement without exacerbating the progression of root resorption, we measured the volume of the resorbed root, and performed the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP-biotin nick-end labeling (TUNEL) method on exposed MOPs during ex

Development of Yorkshire Terrier Dentition.

The development of dentition in dogs has been associated with several problems including tooth over-crowding, missing permanent dentition, and persistent deciduous teeth (PDT). Information on dentition development in different breeds is lacking. This study of 61 Yorkshire terriers aimed to determine the (i) average age at deciduous tooth exfoliation, (ii) average age at permanent tooth eruption, (iii) PDT incidence, and influencing factors such as body weight. The ages of exfoliation of deciduous teeth and eruption of permanent dentition were influenced by body weight and tooth type. These den

Erosive potential of children's chewable vitamin supplements: An in vitro investigation.

BACKGROUND: Chewable vitamins are dietary supplements in which vitamins are combined with a flavor that appeals to children. The acidic nature of some vitamins and some flavoring agents may cause dental erosion. We investigated the effect of children's chewable vitamin supplements on the loss of minerals in teeth. METHODS: Forty-two human tooth enamel samples were prepared and randomly assigned to seven groups (n=6). Six groups contained different chewable vitamin tablets dissolved in deionized water, and a control group contained only deionized water. Each tablet was ground before its dissol

Prevalence and severity of temporomandibular joint disorder in partially versus completely edentulous patients: A systematic review.

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) following tooth loss may or may not be prevalent, but the risk of developing these disorders is always there due to changes in occlusion and vertical dimension, leading to changes in the disc-fossa relationship. The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the prevalence and severity of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder in partially versus completely edentulous patients. An elaborated literature search was conducted in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, Lilacs, and Google Scholar databases including all articles about varied effects o…

Biofabrication of engineered dento-alveolar tissue.

Oral health is essential for a good overall health. Dento-alveolar conditions have a high prevalence, ranging from tooth decay periodontitis to alveolar bone resorption. However, oral tissues exhibit a limited regenerative capacity, and full recovery is challenging. Therefore, regenerative therapies for dento-alveolar tissue (e.g., alveolar bone, periodontal membrane, dentin-pulp complex) have gained much attention, and novel approaches have been proposed in recent decades. This review focuses on the cells, biomaterials and the biofabrication methods used to develop therapies for tooth root bi
